Beach, Friends, Monk & Verse

Mumbai, India.

You must watch every step you take. You want to stay dry so you are
prudent about dodging waves as they roll in. You watch every step you take
because the beach is not all sand. There is debris, natural ocean stuff,
and otherwise, human snack remains and even feces. You watch every step
because the terrain is sometimes uneven. Drainage from the condos creates
minor creeps. In other words your eyes need to be planted to the ground.
I met Mahesh who is young and speaks English. He lived in Canada for two
years and worked at a call centre. Not surprising. Reflections of "Slum
dog." I also met a group of young men, the second day in a row. They had
been hanging out at the beach since 2AM (now it's 4AM) to attend the
mangal arati services at the Juhu temple. They expressed in broken English
and Hindi how they wanted to be purified. I could tell by their stylish
apparel that they are part of Bollywood pop culture yet they craved for
some piety in their lives. I felt it necessary to befriend and encourage
them.

As mentioned earlier, I have a roommate who hails from Spain, Yadunandan
Swami, is a relatively new ordained monk in the sannyasa order. Immersed
in education he is the principle of Bhaktivedanta college, a short
distance from Brussels. He completed his Masters degree at the University
of Wales and specialized in theology and Religious studies. For his
thesis, he has written on the topic "Vaishnava Sannyasis in Modernity: the
life and challenges."

I looked through his paper and most interesting was his list of ten major
reasons for persons parting from the renounced order within the tradition.

A personal highlight for the day was a revisit to the last verse in
chapter 11 of the Bhagavad-gitaText 55 reads as such: "My dear Arjuna,
he who engages in My pure devotional service, free from the contamination
of fruitive activities and mental speculation, he who works for Me, who
makes Me the supreme goal of his life, and who is friendly to every living
being – he certainly comes to me."

Until the truth is known

Mumbai, India

The news was troubling to everyone. Coonspicuous by his absence is one of our finest monks, Bhakti Vijnan Swami. He is not present at our Mumbai meetings because he's fighting a battle on his home front in Russia.

Apparently Russian authorities are claiming that the sacred teachings of the Gita incite "extremist" attitudes. Practitioners of bhakti-yoga are potential terrorists.

Please! The charge is extremist.

In India there is a history of pacificism. On the one hand you have centuries of brute force entering in, with minor resistance. On the other hand you have rejected outsiders coming in as genuine refugees. Always accommodating, always open-armed, all embracing and always warm - that is mother India.

If anything is violent about the Gita we may not necessarily deny the aggressive connotations in its contents. A war did take place, at Kurukshetra. Moreover the reader of the Gita is to glean the more relevant message of challenging the enemies within. There are kama(lust), krodha(anger) and lobha(greed), they need to be harnessed. That, in all frankness is the implication. It's a good message and deserves universal application. In any event the charge is false.

This is what is troubling my mind as I plod along by Juhu Beach. The world is full of misunderstandings because perceptions are imperfect. Such is the world. And yet the combat cannot cease until the truth is known.

Stay On

Toronto, Ontario

I received a call from someone in the States expressing what a strain it is these days on the financial level. "Either you've lost a job or you're working 10-12 hours a day to hold onto what you have," she said. The unemployment rate is up to almost 10%. Discontentedness is strong as evidence by protests by Wall Street. Many have lost their jobs and homes and are not left with such high hopes. Bank firms live on fat profits while the average person struggles like anything. People feel cheated and exploited.

Welcome to the material world and the system of capitalism.

Any 'ism' does have its defects. We plod along in life waxing and waning, from profits to losses in any scenario, it's the way it is. To those who have taken up the fighting spirit against injustice, "Keep it up!" But ultimately we do need to keep our sanity, isn't it, while going through all this gruel.

The caller's name was Vaidehi, which is a name of Sita, the same damsel, consort of King Rama. The epic, The Ramayan, details how Sita was kidnapped by the demon Ravana, whose vain effort to exploit this great goddess of fortune led to disaster. It seems Ravana had little scope for dharma, acting outside the boundaries of righteousness. During the stressed ordeal, Sita kept her composure because of her constant, positive contemplation on Rama.

The Vedas of India constantly tell us to stand up for dharma, doing what is right, and to stay cool in the process through positive reflection, keeping in good association, and chanting the names of Rama and Krishna.

Take heart, Vaidehi, and hubby, Ram. Hang in there! Stay on track.

Sutapa das, BV Manor, UK: Religious War

Recent world events have compounded apprehensions about the social implications of religious belief. While governments grapple with the problem of terrorism, the growing opposition to religion becomes strikingly apparent. As a traveling monk, I am often drawn into heated debates over the link between religion and war. To complicate matters further, the revered conversation of Bhagavad-gita is spoken at the onset of a fratricidal war, and Krishna is seemingly the one inciting Arjuna to fight! Does the Vedic tradition promote bloodshed and violence? Do spiritualists in this line secretly believe that war, hostility and the killing of innocent people is necessary for 'religious revolution'?

In ancient Vedic scriptures we find the famous aphorism, ahimsyat sarva bhutanam – "one should not commit violence to any living being." Since nonviolence is a cardinal principle of the spiritualist they are urged to refrain from causing harm to even animals or plants. However, non-violence can mean different things in different situations. As a guardian of the people, the warrior Arjuna was required to take responsibility for the upkeep of law and order in society. In this case, his non-violence had to be expressed through confrontational means. Such strong action is neither taken whimsically, nor for the sake of material gain, and never with a mood of hatred or envy. It was the last resort, and even when the battle commenced, it was fought between consenting parties who followed strict moral and ethical codes of conduct. Before drawing any parallels between the Battle of Kuruksetra and modern warfare, one must look into the historical, moral and social context of each circumstance.

History shows that violence has touched every part of the world, independent of the theological beliefs of people. In fact the most destructive wars, were fought for secular, political, economic, or ideological reasons. Religion is not the cause of conflict – on the contrary, it is the very neglect of genuine spirituality that causes war, violence and unrest in this world. Societies of genuine spiritualists hold great reverence for life. Qualities of respect, contentment, humility and tolerance are the cornerstones of their spirituality. Saints who have delivered the Bhagavad-gita to the modern world have affirmed that the real revolution in society is to transform people's hearts through selflessness and love. The real revolution is a revolution of consciousness. In conclusion, to solve the problem of violence the answer is not to reject spirituality, but rather to restore, reform and revive it in its true nature and spirit.

Mukunda Charan das, SA: Many Lifetimes Of Typing

‘Let us know if there’s any more work’, I tell him. ‘I can take it back to Mott Street and type there’. ‘More? Yes’, he says, ‘There is lots more’. He opens a closet door and pulls out two large bundles in saffron cloth. Within, he shows me thousands of pages of single spaced, marginless manuscripts of literatures unknown in the western world. I stand before them astounded. ‘It’s a lifetime of typing!’, I protest. ‘Oh, yes!’, he smiles happily. ‘Many lifetimes’.

New Vrndavan, USA: The end of a beautiful season of picking flowers for Krsna

As the cool weather and shorter days bring the blooming season to an end, I am savoring the last smells and touches of our “real” flowers. There are still marigolds galore and they make beautiful fall garlands. The zinnias are fading, but the dahlias are just now coming into their own. In fact, they are my favorite flower for picking and making garlands for Srila Prabhupada.

Garland making is such a nice meditation, that Krsna has increased my service from helping Gopalasyapriya making Gaur Nitai garlands, to making the small garlands for Damodar’s picture and Deity, Srila Prabhupada’s and soon Gaura Nitai garlands every day.

I will be making the flower purchases, but it doesn’t compare to loading up the car with bags, a bucket of water and spending time breathing the fresh air and filling the bags with all the different varieties of flowers for garlands and vases.

I encourage all the devotees who have a gardening spot to put aside some space for the Deities to engage your plants in Krsna’s service and to expand our supply so that we can have all the garlands and vases from locally grown flowers from May until October.

Your servant,

Jayadevi dasi

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: “Return in Autumn” By Paul Engle

THE LAND UNCHANGED, the cattle track,
Narrow for two split hooves to meet,
Winds to walnut grove and back
As when I walked it with bare feet,
Horses with no different eye—
Brown water flowing over stone—
Watch white-maned north wind running by,
Or corn from fields that they had sown.
New mood in older things must be
An inner change, mind’s bone grown longer,
Nerves less blind, more quick to see,
Blood’s cry for air turned stronger.
A man’s age like returning rain
Mingles with flesh it knew when younger,
Raising for him that bitter grain,
Remembered things, which ease no hunger.
Through that rain beating on my face
I see the huddled shape of days
That wandered with me in this place,
But lost their old and friendly ways.
Can I hills, horses understand,
And not past self? Yet here, I know
That one tense mind, one troubled hand,
Make present self forever go,
As frozen pond, the end of food,
Drives the southward duck to flying.
Though I return in autumn wood
I can find nothing but its crying.

Giridhari das, Brasilia, Brazil: 10-day Preaching Tour of the Northeast of Brazil

From September 23rd to October 3rd, I did a multi-city 10-day preaching tour in the Northeast of Brazil. The trip started in Aracaju and ended in Natal, spanning some 800km, mostly coastal cities.   The Northeast of Brazil is famous for its beautiful beaches, but the pace of my tour was quite intense and I only managed some brief visits to the beach, for japa walks and a quick swim.

One very interesting fact about the tour is that it happened as a direct result of our yoga retreats at Pandavas Paradise. At the two ends of the tour were events organized by guests who previously had no contact with Krishna consciousness until they came to one of our retreats, and having liked what they heard and saw in Pandavas Paradise , invited me to speak in their home towns.  I was pleased to see this pratical result of our regular yoga retreats.

The first event was a wellbeing, alternative lifestyle, yoga event in Aracaju, in its third consective year. I was their guest speaker for this year. I gave the opening lecture, another lecture on the following day, and finished the event with kirtan and Nrsimhadeva prayers on the last day. Lots of books were sold and new contacts made. Aracaju has only one ISKCON devotee, as yet uninitiated, so it was good to inspire him and to try and help him organize a monthly program there.

From there I rented a car (turned out to be a bad decision!) and drove to Maceió.  In Maceió we have 4 ISKCON devotees who are trying to organize a regular program there. They organized for me to give a talk in a beachside hotel. I spoke on the teachings of Dattatreya, found in the 11th Canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam. Some very interested, intelligent people, who had previously had no contact with ISKCON, showed up. Again books were sold and a new contacts made.

From there I drove to Recife, crossing the great São Franciso river, the second most famous river in Brasil after the Amazon. Recife was one of the first cities in the Northeast of Brazil to open an ISKCON centre, back in the late 70′s. In the early days, their full-fledged Gaura Nitai temple was filled with dozens of fired-up sankirtan devotees. These days, they still have dozens of devotees in their congregation, including some Prabhupada disciples. Though the Deities are currently residing in Nova Vrajadhama, a rural project some 150km from there, the devotees are currently planning their return to Recife in the near future. Despite the Deities not being there, the preaching is going on nicely and they have a well located cultural center and restaurant near one of the city’s universities. I spoke on the Sri Siksastaka and did a quick questions and answers session on the Gita as well to a crowd compromised mostly of local devotees. Sweet 3 hours of krishna-katha – this was one of my favorite events of the whole tour.

From Recife I drove inwards, away from the coast, to Caruaru – a small city in the interior of the State of Pernambuco. An unlikely place for Krishna consciousness, yet the home of one of ISKCON Brazil’s oldest rural communities – Nova Vrajadhama. The local devotees have expertly cultivated Krishna consciousness here, to the point of having a major city square named after Prabhupada (for his centennial celebrations). I spoke that night in their preaching center, which functions as a restaurant during the day. The small place was packed to capacity and the crowd very attentive.

I slept in Nova Vrajadhama, some 40 minutes from the center of Caruaru. This is the home of one of only two Radha Krishna Deities in Brazil, the other being Nova Gokula. Sri Sri Radha Govinda are graceful, sweet Deities. A small community of approximately nine devotees live and take care of this remote dhama. You can see some pictures of this beautiful farm here.

From there my trip took an unexpected turn! First, I managed to get my rented car bogged in the mud, a mere 40 meters from where I started. A full hour of ardous digging, pushing and adjusting was needed to free the car. Because I was now late for a TV interview in my next stop, Campina Grande, I pushed forward with a bit too much passion through the rough 10km dirt road leading out of the farm, hitting a rock squarely on the oil reservoir. That would have been pretty bad already, however, because of the rough conditions of the road in general, I did not realize the seriousness of the bump we felt, and thus did not stop the car. As a result, two kilometers later the engine, now deprived of oil, was making a ghastly sound, forcing me to stop the car, which would then not start up again. Final tally: a blown engine! By the time I reached Campina Grande, the whole day had been spent dealing with the car rental company, police reports for insurance purposes, etc.

In Campina Grande I just had enough time to shower before going off for my Yoga Sutra lecture. Campina Grande is the home of one of our best urban ISKCON communities, with gorgeous Maha Gaura Nitai Deities and our Bhakti-shastri Seminary. The devotees there have been very well trained and inspired by Dhanvantari Maharaja.

No longer having a car, I continued my tour by bus. The last stop: Natal, where I spent the weekend teaching a 12 hour Bhagavad-gita seminar to an amazing group of about 20 Spiritists who are now getting a serious taste for Krishna consciousness. As I mentioned before, this group had their first contact with Krishna consciousness in Pandavas Paradise. They came to our Easter yoga retreat earlier this year and, since then, have been practicing japa, offering their food and studying Prabhupada’s books. The weekend Gita course in Natal was organized by them so they could continue to deepend their understanding and practice of Krishna consciousness. It was thus a great crowd, which included some local devotees as well. I expect that they will soon be fully practicing Krishna devotees.

Thus, with this brilliant weekend in Natal, my tour came to an end. Tired but very blissed from 10 days of spreading these wonderful teachings and associating with devotees and seekers, I returned to Pandavas Paradise.

Japa Group: Out Of Many Such Vaisnavas

Out of many such Vaisnavas, one may be found to be very seriously engaged in the service of the Lord and strictly following all the regulative principles, chanting the prescribed number of rounds on japa beads and always thinking of how to expand the Krsna consciousness movement.

Srila Prabhupada's Letters

1973 October 18 : "We must be as tolerant as the tree, as we execute the Krsna consciousness movement. Without this mentality we cannot be successful. Material nature means disagreement but our success will depend on agreement even though there are varieties of engagements."

Srila Prabhupada's Letters

1973 October 18: "If we fight on account of diversity, it is simply material platform. All our men must meet in Mayapur every year and discuss how to make unity in diversity. That will make our movement successful. One section of men have already gone out, therefore we must be very careful."

H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Wednesday 19 October 2011--The Vision of the Mahabhagavata--and--Is Krishna Consciousness Science?

A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course Wednesday 19 October 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. For Transcendental Association Connect With Other Members of this Course. Join this Conference: http://groups.google.com/group/sda_students Help Popularize Our Message By Liking Today's Thought on Facebook: Today's Thought: The Vision of the Mahabhagavata Uploaded from Kaunas, Lithuania The most highly advanced devotee is known as the mahabhagavata. His distinguishing quality is that he sees Krishna within everything and everything within Krishna. Such a devotee is the genuine well-wisher and best friend of all living entities. His only desire is that everyone can become happy by being reinstated in their original loving relationships with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. His pure heart is completely devoid of the tendency to criticize others, but like a compassionate physician he kindly points out the faults in others to help them become free from their material disease, which is keeping them entangled in the miserable cycle of birth and death. Sankarshan Das Adhikari The Topmost Mahabhagavata, Srila Prabhupada, Initiates a Most Fortunate Soul as His Disciple http://www.backtohome.com/images/Prabhupada/SP_Gives_diksha.jpg Answers by Citing the Vedic Version: Question: Is Krishna Consciousness Science? Krishna consciousness seems to have the answer to all questions. So is it a science? I thank you for spreading Krishna consciousness to a materialistic person like me. Your unworthy servant and admirer, Francisco Answer: It's the Supreme Science Science means to factually know things as they are without any mental speculation. Theories such as Darwin's theory, that cannot be proven by experiment, are not science, even though they are falsely touted as being science. Real science means to know the original cause of all existence and thus to have full knowledge of everything both material and spiritual. Through the process of Krishna consciousness one can directly experience and know the original cause of all causes, the source of all existence, Krishna the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and thus become perfect in scientific knowledge. Therefore Krishna consciousness is real science, and it is the supreme science.
