H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Saturday 6 August--Severe Drought Ravages Texas--and--Is the Disciplic Succession Broken?
A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course Saturday 6 August The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Special Announcement: Connect With Other Members of this Course. Join this Conference: http://groups.google.com/group/sda_students Today's Thought: Severe Drought Ravages Texas Uploaded from Bhaktivedanta Ashram, Austin, Texas USA Drought and wildfires have led the US Department of Agriculture to declare the entire state of Texas a natural disaster area, Every day here in Austin the temperature has been rising beyond 105 degrees (41 degrees Celsius). We are experiencing skies that are almost completely cloudless and seeing no hope of rain any time soon. How ironic it is that just several months there was excessive rain and disastrous flooding of the Mississippi river just a few hundred miles east of here. One could wonder why there is such an imbalance in nature and if the scientists can do something about it. Can they make it rain where it is needed and not rain where it is not needed? Some scientists have promised us immortality. We wonder how they can do this when they can't even get us some rain. While material science has progressed in so many ways, it has not advanced to point of being able to cause rain to fall. But why should we worry about reinventing the wheel? There is already a science how to get the rain to fall. This is described in the Bhagavad-gita by the supreme scientist, Lord Sri Krishna: annd bhavanti bhtni parjanyd anna-sambhavah yajñd bhavati parjanyo yajñah karma-samudbhavah All living bodies subsist on food grains, which are produced from rains. Rains are produced by performance of yajña [sacrifice], and yajña is born of prescribed duties. --Bhagavad-gita 3.14 We can easily bring the proper amount of rain everywhere by the massive performance of public sankirtana (the congregational chanting of the holy names of God) throughout the world. May everyone engage regularly in the glorification of the holy names of God according to their own scriptures in every town and village of the world. This will bring sufficient rain and solve all the problems of the modern society. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Devastating Drought in Texas http://www.backtohome.com/images/Texas_Drought.jpg Answers by Citing the Vedic Version: Question: Is the Disciplic Succession Broken? Since Srila Prabhupada did not name a successor does mean that the disciplic succession is broken? Francisco Answer: It's Going Quite Strong and Growing Profusely If you think that Srila Prabhupada did not name a successor, you are mistaken. The fact is that Srila Prabhupada said that all of his disciples who are strictly following him would be his successors, and in obedience to his divine instructions many of them are doing just that. Therefore the disciplic succession is not broken. Indeed, is going quite strong and growing profusely. Akrura das, Gita Coaching: FAULTFINDING AND HUMILITY
Until we look at our own faults, we will not stop looking at the faults of others.
- Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati
I have a friend, an executive coach, who helps executives become more humble. Successful people and leaders tend to be too proud, because they have achieved a lot. He charges an extra $20 if you say "but, no or however". He is training top CEOs of huge companies to take feedback without saying, "I agree. I disagree.", without being defensive. You have to just listen, make notes, and say thank you.
Srila Prabhupada is teaching us to be like a bee, not like a fly. Flies go to sores and the bees go for honey. Apart from having some bad qualities, people have good qualities, and we should be able to appreciate and recognize those good qualities, and not focus on something that is wrong in other people.
How can you not see faults?
Especially people that are materially intelligent, they are very perceptive. So they can see many things. When materially intelligent people come to our movement, the immediately see, "This is bad in the management, This preacher is proud, or he is self-righteous. Etc." So how can you not see faults? You are not blind.
Some years ago, when I saw defects in leadership, one day I realized that I have a choice - I can criticize or I can try to help.
What would be a humble way to react to a situation when you are accused of something that you have not done?
You may think that Krsna is behind it and you are being accused for a reason. And you can't control it. It may have been something you have done in the past that is causing this. There is lesson there.
If I remain quiet when I am accuse of something I have not done, then people will continue to accuse me, and continue to get on my case, and torture me.
You may explained what happened. If they continue to accuse you, then just accept it.
When we see a real humility in action, it touches our heart.
What I have seen in my life and in lives of people I know is that even if you don't want to look at your faults, you always get feedback about them. People somehow tell you. Sometimes even a child can come and tell you something. Through some channel you get what you need to hear and what you need to change. So we cannot avoid hearing what we need to change.
One way that we can work on improving ourselves by being proactive, taking initiative, to change, is that we ask for feedforward. Instead of what you have done wrong in the past, you can ask people what can you do better in the future. More or less it is the same as feedback, but it is easier for the false ego.
You ask for one or two suggestions on how to improve in one area. That you try your best to apply it and let them know.• Email to a friend • •

Japa Group: Thoughts On Chanting
Hare Krsna,
All glories to Srila Prabhupada!
My name is Advaita and I am 11 years old. I usually make a prayer to Krsna that when I chant that He can protect me and help me solve any problems I may face and this really happens....after my chanting I feel relieved.
Japa helps me purify my mind from bad thoughts and helps me concentrate on the good things of my life. I think that when we chant we just don't purify ourselves but also others around us and also the one's you love.
I hope I can be blessed from you all to be a good chanter and a nice devotee and I will pray to everyone that is reading this message to have the same blessings.

Australian News: How to celebrate Janmashtami
Janmashtami commemorates the earthly appearance of Krishna, who is described in India’s sacred writings as God Himself. One of the biggest religious festivals in the world, it is celebrated by nine hundred and thirty million people around the world–and two million in the US alone. To devotees, it’s Christmas and New Year’s in one, a day of deep spiritual renewal and celebration that effectively finishes an old year and begins a fresh one.
But why Janmashtami, you may ask? What’s so special about Krishna, as opposed to any other form of God? It’s His personable-ness. He reciprocates in unique, personal ways with every devotee who offers Him love—He is the most adorable, mischievous son, the most romantic lover, the most compassionate friend. And on Janmashtami, devotees celebrate Krishna in all of these aspects. For just as Krishna reciprocates individually with His relatives and confidantes, he responds to the distinct feelings and desires held most deeply in the heart of every single worshipper.
So remember that whatever way you worship Krishna on Janmashtami, He will reciprocate with you accordingly. It’s a meditation that makes for an extremely rewarding devotional experience…..

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Prevalence of Mayavadi Philosophy and Srila Prabhupada's Gift to the world...
With the prevalence of yoga teachings, new hindu sects, interfaith friendly philosophy and water downed teachings, the prevalence of mayavadi philosophy or teaching of impersonal ism continue to be prevalent. I have seen it through the visit to the "hindu" temple without the presence of Krishna, the "feel good vedic" events and new books including versions of the Bhagavad-Gita.
In an attempt to attract more followers, not only does this Mayavadi philosophy soften the message but it directly misrepresents the puranas and history and attempts to diminish Krishna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Of course, for many of us this is old news and something we have dealt with for some time.
However about a month ago an interesting comment by a reader (Deepak Agarwal) hit home...
"actually Srila Prabhupad saved the sanatan dharma by putting it in the safe custody of his western devotees ........just in time.......Jai Srila Prabhupada......all glories to his great disciples.........'
This is true. Srila Prabhupada has given a great gift to the world in preserving sastras "as-it-is" which can clearly defeat these mayavadi tendencies. However, he has trusted members of his society as custodians for the preservation and propagation of this gift....a very important responsibility.
As time marches on and there are off shoots, new publications, varying media surrounded by inter faith dialogue, new yoga influences and hindu infused congregations there may be a temptation to water down or kowtow to mayavadi influenced philosophy or groups. Some may now want to hurt sentiments or think this is a "gentler" approach but in my opinion this is a great disservice to our spiritual master and founder Acarya, Srila Prabhupada. The reality is that Srila Prabhupada's conviction and teachings has and continues to have a global influence converting thousands upon thousands including all of "us", so let's keep it "as-it-is" and preserve and persevere.

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: On Pa. farm, cows live a luxury-oriented life
By Jeremy Johnson, The (Oil City) Derrick
Contented and healthy cows are productive cows, and you can, uh, milk productive cows for more moola and higher quality milkCOOPERSTOWN, Pa. — Rolling Spring Farm owners Charlie and Denise Bean are trying to milk their cows for all they’re worth.
In order to do so, they’ve taken a more pampered approach to dairy farming than the many generations before them.
The Beans last year built a new, state-of-the-art barn on their more than 130-acre farm in Canal Township, in northwestern Pennsylvania, that capitalizes on the concept of cow comfort because they believe that, much like people, a happy cow is a productive cow.
“[The new barn] has mostly improved cow comfort and cow health,” Denise said. “And that was really our main purpose behind building it in the first place.”
But the real benefit — aside from a more humane approach to raising cows, according to Mr. Bean — can be seen in sheer production numbers and milk quality.
Since the new barn was constructed, the cows have produced 10 or more extra gallons of milk a day, he said.
While that may not seem like much moola, a quick calculation over 365 days (after all, cows never quit making milk) reveals a potential for tens of thousands of extra dollars in revenue.
“Based on the improvements we’ve seen these cows produce up to an extra 10 gallons of good milk per day, and that alone will probably pay for the barn in the long run,” Mr. Bean said.
Using local ingenuity, a lot of field research (including a study of other farms in the state), donations from state farming supply companies and resources from the Pennsylvania Center for Dairy Excellence, the couple went about constructing a 100-cow barn on the hill just above their old milking barn.
“Dairy farmers have long been innovators when it comes to giving optimal animal care,” said John Frey, executive director of the Pennsylvania Center for Dairy Excellence. “And what you’re seeing here is an example of that.”
The new barn includes a more-than-ample walking track for the numerous bovine guests, with open stalls that permit cows to move freely (or rest peacefully) throughout the space.

Kripamoya dasa, UK: Daily Puja
Each morning I gather up all the ingredients for my daily puja. This activity is known as upadan. Flowers are a big part of it: some for petals to offer to the feet of Krishna; some for decorating His form; and others for offering during the arati at the conclusion of the puja. Then there are the food items: fresh fruit, dried fruit, nuts and a sweet of some kind. I have been offering home-made laddus for the past two weeks, and now its honey. My daughter Jahnavi brought me some honey back from her kirtan travels in the USA. She found some good honey on Block Island, off the coast of Rhode Island.
Everything takes around 45 minutes and I chant, recite, sing and speak standard mantras and songs. Good voice training – and good for the mind and the soul.
Here’s today’s tray: Flowers are purple Buddleia; orange Calendula; and some other flowers I need some help identifying. Any suggestions from readers? The offering is mandarin orange, dried plums (which we call ‘prunes’ over here) sliced kiwi and Californian walnuts.
Lamps are an antique cast-bronze and a hammered silver, both from Udipi in Karnataka. Brass bathing turtle from Sri Rangam in Tamil Nadu. Two small silver panchapatras and spoons, and copper and stainless steel gindhis from Vrindavan. Flowered tray from British Home Stores!
Thank you for your interest.

New Vrndavan, USA: New Vrindaban Clinic Starts Up
All glories to Srila Prabhupada:
I have decided to begin two clinics a week beginning next week. Wednesday mornings, 9a.m.- 1p.m and Sundays, 2p.m.-6p.m., beginning August 10.
The clinic will be in the “old clinic” site and now a part of Tapahpunja’s organic farm college. (Next to garden)
All walk-ins are welcome. I encourage all devotees to enroll in my clinic program, beginning with a history, physical exam, and vital signs.
I want to begin gathering detailed info on each and every devotee, as this is vital in creating an ongoing quality healthcare system for our community. having comprehensive health info on all members of the community could easily be lifesaving in cases of emergencies.
A survey/questionnaire will be available to all devotees to fill out soon.
We need 100 percent cooperation from all devotees in order to create a first class comprehensive medical system for our community.
Thank you,

Japa Group: Krsna & His Name Are Non-Different
Here are some very nice words from Srila Prabhupada in Beyond Birth and Death:The simple process of chanting the names of Krsna will reveal what one is, what God is, what the material and spiritual universes are, why we are conditioned, how we can get out of that conditioning—and everything else, step by step.Such meditation on Krsna may seem very difficult, but it is not. If one practices Krsna consciousness by chanting the mahä-mantra, Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Räma, Hare Räma, Räma Räma, Hare Hare, he will be quickly helped. Krsna and His name are nondifferent, and Krsna and His transcendental abode are also nondifferent. By sound vibration we can have Krsna associate with us.Hare Krsna.

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION
O chief of the Bhāratas, when there is an increase in the mode of passion the symptoms of great attachment, fruitive activity, intense endeavor, and uncontrollable desire and hankering develop.
A.C. BHAKTIVEDANTA SWĀMĪ ‘S PURPORT
One in the mode of passion is never satisfied with the position he has already acquired; he hankers to increase his position. If he wants to construct a residential house, he tries his best to have a palatial house, as if he would be able to reside in that house eternally. And he develops a great hankering for sense gratification. There is no end to sense gratification. He always wants to remain with his family and in his house and to continue the process of sense gratification. There is no cessation of this. All these symptoms should be understood as characteristic of the mode of passion.
MY THOUGHTS
This text tells us about the effect of the mode of passion. Let’s step back and get our perspective and context on this.
Background
In the previous chapter we learned that everything in existence is a combination of matter and spirit. Spirit is bound into matter, and this chapter is teaching us about how matter accomplishes that miraculous task.
The force which binds soul into matter is “guna” - a power that operates in three manners, three “modes:” (1) Clarifying, (2) Coloring, (3) Darkening. The “mode of goodness” (sattva-guna) creates a clear path for the soul to interact with matter. The “mode of passion” (rajo-guna) colors the soul with excessive desire. The “mode of ignorance” (tamo-guna) darkens the soul almost entirely.
We learned that each mode exerts a different type of “charm” which entices the soul to allow herself to be subsumed into matter. The mode of goodness seduces with the feeling of happiness, the mode of passion with the feeling of ambition, and ignorance with the relief of oblivion.
Then we learned that these modes are in constant fluctuation. There is never only one mode affecting us. It is always a combination of all three – but there is usually one mode that is prominent over the others.
Current Section
If different modes affect us all the time, how can we tell one from the other? What are the primary symptoms of each mode, by which we can understand which of the modes is prominent over the other two?
The current group of verses, 11-13, answers this question.
When goodness is dominant all of our senses feel clear, and we have clear knowledge and perception. When passion dominates (the current verse) we feel very attached to starting new efforts. When ignorance dominates (the next verse) we our senses become dark, we dream and fall asleep.
Symptoms of the Mode of Passion
Now let’s look at the current verse in more detail…
lobhaḥ pravṛttir ārambhaḥ
karmaṇām aśamaḥ spṛhā
rajasy etāni jāyante
vivṛddhe bharatarṣabha
The main thing that develops from the mode of passion is desire. Desire is called spṛhā in this text. The other words before it are clarifying the nature of the desire that arises from the mode of passion.
Lobhaḥ is the main word describing the type of desire that the mode of passion creates. Lobha means greedy, excessive and strong. Strong, excessive greed results from the mode of passion.
Pravṛttir describes the main focus of the greed: to accumulate more than we need. Everyone needs a place to live, but the mode of passion makes us want to have a better place to live.
Ārambhaḥ describes what happens next – we have to start new efforts. When we want something better than what we already have, we need to make new plans to get the money, resources, etc.
Karmaṇām describes the next event in the chain – once we start the new enterprises we have to work really hard to carry them out.
Aśamaḥ is the final descriptive word. It means unable to rest. We are now working so hard to carry out the plans we laid for improving the satisfaction of our desires – we cannot take a moment out to rest, to joke with our children, to have a light conversation, to just do anything spontaneous. We cannot rest.
This is the nature of the mode of passion. It inflames desire into greed for acquiring more and more, thus we embark on ambitious projects, work our asses off in that regard, and never get a moment’s rest. You will see later that the “happiness” produced of this mode looks like “nectar at first, but is poison at the end.” This is already clear. It starts out with the grandiose hope of improving what we have, and it ends up in the inability to get a moment of peace.
May Śrī Kṛṣṇa release me somehow from the sharp, cold iron shakles of the mode of passion – causing me constant worry and ache.
