ISKCON Melbourne, AU: Today's Darsana

Lord Krishna describes Srimati Radharani in a most poetic manner:

23/11/2011

"Although the effulgence of the moon is brilliant initially at night, in the daytime it fades away. Similarly, although the lotus is beautiful during the daytime, at night it closes. But, O My friend, the face of My most dear Srimati Radharani is always bright and beautiful, both day and night. Therefore, to what can Her face be compared?"

(Vidagdha-madhava 5.20)

Here is the darsana of the lotus face of Srimati Radhika, and Her moonlike complexion, in all Her splendour.

H.H. Kadamba Kanana Swami: To act enthusiastic!

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, Helsinki, Finland, 2011) Lecture – Nama Tattva Part IV

Jayananda and Vishnujan, were legendary devotees, and with their enthusiasm, they could do amazing things! It is said that in the kirtan, Vishnujan was just something else. He could just go through the whole day with full enthusiasm, and this enthusiasm never stops….for eight hours a day!

One day someone asked him:

“Vishnujan, how is it that you are always enthusiastic?”

He said:

“I’m not always enthusiastic, but I just act enthusiastic, then the devotees become enthusiastic, and that makes me enthusiastic”.

So this is nice. This is a nice example of how we make each other enthusiastic in devotional service!

Kurma dasa, AU: New Arrivals in Kurma's Patio Garden

I'd like to welcome a host of new residents to my patio garden. Some were grown from seed, and others purchased as seedlings and semi-matured plants. Today I will feature just four of them. Maybe you recall my baby snow pea plants a few weeks ago. Grown from seed, they are now flowering and fruiting. They are clinging to a small bamboo tripod/totem. Next time I'll attach a higher frame.

my new snow peas:

Another new member of the team are my zucchini plants (pictured below). I've never grown zucchini, especially since I only have pots, planting bags and bare brick patio. Let's see how they go. So far so good. I planted zucchini seeds 18 days ago. They are fast growers!

zucchinis - early days:

Purple beans (pictured below) are another new resident. A friend gave me seeds, and I planted these also 18 days ago, at the auspicious lunar days for planting fruiting annuals. There are several different varieties of purple fresh-picking snap pole bean plants with names such as Royalty Purple and Royal Burgundy. I am unsure what variety these are. My friend Trevor used to grow them in Perth and they grew to over 2 metres tall on a huge trellis. Obviously mine (all planted out in 3 x 35 litre capacity planting bags) are limited to my 1-metre totems.

giant purple beans:

All common green beans can trace their origins back to Central and South America. Purple beans are essentially green beans disguised in a violet hued skin. They maintain the same lean cylindric shape, size and stringless seam. Underneath the purple shell is the same crisp translucent succulent green flesh and pale lime green peas. The flavor matches that of aFrench green bean with grassy notes and a sweet finish. And, once cooked, the violet hues fade to green, leaving the purple bean to appear as common as a green bean.

more giant purple beans:

Another exciting find is Ceylon Spinach (Basella alba) - also known as Malabar SpinachMalabar Nightshade and Malabar Greens. It is an easily-grown vine from tropical Asia. Apparently the leaves and shoots taste similar to ordinary spinach and they can be harvested regularly to be eaten raw or cooked. The plant is pictured below.

newly-planted ceylon climbing spinach:

Large, mature leaves have a stronger flavour, more like spinach, no doubt because of their rich iron and chlorophyll content. Large leaves can be lightly steamed, sliced and tossed in stir-fries, added to quiche, soups, casseroles, and mixed with vegetable dishes. Leaves infused in boiling water are drunk as a tea.

Tender tips of stems are lightly steamed, resembling asparagus in flavour. Flowers can also be eaten. The juicy, purple berries can be used to colour jellies, sweets, drinks and for face painting (though I won't be doing any of that).

The plant is a rich source of chlorophyll, a valuable blood building component, which also provides favourable intestinal flora, digestive enzymes, and stimulation of secretions of the stomach, liver and pancreas. The mucilaginous leaves are valued for removing mucus and toxins from the body.

Te plant's high water content is cooling to the body and has the effect of clearing the complexion and dealing with fluid retention. In Sri Lanka it is one of the basic herbal medicines given for insomnia and nervous breakdown. Leaves are used as a poultice on the forehead to relieve headaches, and bandaged over ulcers and eczema.

I purchased the plant as is from a great nursery in Northern Australia called Mudbrick Cottage Herb Farm, who express post hard-to-find plants at a very reasonable rate. I purchased 8 well-matured plants for less than $50 including express next-day postage. They all arrived in perfect condition. There's many other new plants to show you, but I'll do that another day. Stay tuned!

Japa Group: Don't Stop Chanting

Many times we just don't feel like chanting - it's common amongst devotees, despite the number of years we've been engaged in reciting the Holy names.

If we have doubts about chanting, it means we don't feel anything and it's become mechanical or ritualistic....something we do because we have to do it not necessarily because we want to.
There is hope for us all....if we simply pray to the Lord for help each day - ask the Lord to give the inspiration to continue with our chanting and to overcome obstacles like the mind or other things.
I read a very nice quote the other day in this regard.

“...even if there may be some problems, always try to remain in Krsna consciousness. Do not give up chanting the Hare Krsna mantra simply due to some external difficulties. Under all circumstances you should always chant Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. This will protect you from all danger of being influenced by maya or the material energy.”

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: Solar-powered Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Sprout Up Nationally

By Michael Gorton, CEO and chairman, Principal Solar

Here’s a breath of fresh air for the future of electric vehicles (EVs): Cities across the country have been given the green light to install more solar-powered charging stations that promise to energize the demand for electric and hybrid vehicles while reducing pollution on the supply side.

Corporate planners and municipalities must play an instrumental role in bringing EV to the mainstream. Otherwise, “range anxiety” will remain the Achilles’ heel of electric cars.

Also read: Solar, storage, and EVs: a powerful trifecta

Hundreds of these solar-powered recharging stations have sprouted up across the nation, giving juice to the “green revolution” and building upon awareness that the sun is a versatile and efficient renewable energy resource — here today, here to stay.

The US federal government has already doled out several hundred million dollars to at least nine cities so that they can install free charging stations designed to keep electric vehicles on the road and influence tepid public purchasing attitudes.

Many of these recharging connections, which look something like streamlined gasoline pumps, have been deployed at highly concentrated areas including shopping malls, motels, and dozens of public places where cars might be parked long enough to get a jolt of needed power.

Private enterprise is also joining forces in collaborative efforts to converge smart technologies with solar energy to put these carports on the map where they might be least expected — from South Bend, IN to Portland, OR.

Automakers couldn’t be any happier. They see solar-powered EV charging stations as an avenue to make owners of conventional automobiles, who may have been reluctant to pay a heftier price for an EV, green with envy now that the potential exists to drive farther without getting stranded and eliminating the cost of gas at the pumps.

By the end of 2012, almost every major automaker, from General Motors to Honda, plans to have a least one electric car on its showroom floor; a far cry from when the highly successful Toyota Prius became the first hybrid — a car that runs on two distinctive sources of power — to penetrate the market in 2006.

As EVs enter the American mainstream in anticipated record numbers, corporate planners and municipalities must play an instrumental role in laying the groundwork to continue the trend toward clean technology within the nation’s transportation infrastructure. Careful consideration and understanding of the deployment and integration of public charging stations should be made with daily commuting and typical driving habits in mind.

Otherwise, “range anxiety” will remain the Achilles’ heel of electric cars. Batteries need to be charged by safe, practical, affordable and easy-to-access renewable energy sources that eliminate concerns related to extended travel.

Americans have further fuel for thought. Natural-gas-powered vehicles are another contender to replace the traditional gasoline-automobile option. Natural gas is an abundant resource that produces significantly lower pollutants than gasoline and it is available virtually everywhere.

Cars powered by natural gas and their electric counterparts both have the advantage of lower air-polluting emissions and reduced operating expenses.

The success of these vehicles comes down to a significant reduction in prices, and an improvement in battery technology for electric vehicles to enter the mainstream.

Viable technologies exist today for alternative-fueled vehicles to become more than a vision, but a reality. What remains to be seen is a conscientious effort on the part of all Americans to educate, legislate, and enthuse one another to energize the transportation infrastructure with clean technologies so that the nation can become independent on foreign oil  — and take a big healthy breath of fresh air.

Meeting Christopher

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Doves and robins filled the ether with their precious sounds. Threes perspire (at least some), and drop rain even on a clear day. This is rather remarkable. There will not be a cloud in the sky and yet all this moisture drops from these massive trees lining the streets of Buenos Aires.

Fortunately this day is over-cast. It's also a day to pack up, give good byes to old and new friends and get a little mentally prepared for the flight back to Canada. I managed to squeeze in a measly three kilometres walking. It would have been more but as I embarked on a projected one hour of leg work, I was approached by a Portuguese photographer on assignment for some magazine. He was fascinated by the image of a monk and took quite the time in his perfectionism to go for the right backdrop of a portrait shot.

"Oh well," I figured, "if the photo gets published it will be a promotion for monasticism."

By evening I was grounded at the Buenos Aires Airport until flight time. A guy, Christopher, in his early thirties and who resides in Iowa, came to chat. I had a feeling he was going to go in the direction of evangelist schpeil. Sure enough. It began with first time niceities and then the Christian trump-card was played when giving me the ultimate "only way" line. He wanted my opinion.

"The problem with Absolutist statements is that it creates an exclusive, rather than inclusive, environment. If Christ wanted us to love our neighbour as much as ourselves then friendship should be sustained through commonality. Wouldn't you agree that loving God is of prime importance, that family, community and declaring war on drugs, pornography and other self centered habits are issues we share. Where you have a Jesus line about 'love' we have an equal message in sacred books like the Gita."

I would say Christopher intended to dominate the conversation. I let him have his space and I hope compassionately. Graciously he allowed for a two-way. I suggested that God is the source of all sperm and that He has more than one son, since He is the father of all. We both raised more points. For the most part it was a congenial exchange. I mentioned to him I appreciated his kind forwardness in talking to me and his resoluteness towards Jesus.

"Consider me your neighbour while I have a conviction to Krishna and please come and visit me in Toronto." He began extolling the glories of what started in the nineties as 'the Toronto Blessing", an evangelical healing movement located near the city's airport. Again, I appealed to Christopher to capture the essence of sacred statements and to not let walls divide spiritual seekers. It's a long journey to get home and we might just need each other to get there.

JAZZANATHA!

New Orleans, Louisiana

Our small drama troupe was invited to New Orleans for their third annual Ratha Yatra. Travelling with me via air from Buffalo with stop-over in Cleveland was Dhruva and Yogendra, our two Nova Scotian monks, Sing Lung Wong, who is a lay member from our Toronto community and Nitai Priya, the receptionist at our temple.

The air was fresh after exiting from Louis Armstrong Airport. It was cooler than us Canucks had anticipated. We were treated to the local temple prasadam (sanctified food) and then set out for walking the French Quarter.

New Orleans is certainly a music town. You hear brass music in and outside venues. Brass and beer are the features of this birthplace of jazz and various forms of blues. It came to mind that jazz is really an expression of emotions rendered artistically. We say in Vaishnava (devotee) circles that Jagannath (a name of Krishna) is the master of the universe. Could we stretch it to say that God is the source of all sentiments and emotions and therefore we could call him Jazzanath?

It was a thought.

It became evident to me that our tiny group of pilgrim tourists had musical abilities. With no determined or scheduled service outside of the morning talk from the Gita, we decided to drive back to the temple to pick up mridanga drums. Our two Scotia monks went to N Peters Street and we, with our vocals and tambourine, played and sang up a storm. People were so warmed up to it. It convinced me that the sankirtana (collective chanting) is well-received in this city that breaths out music. 24/7.

New Orleans, we love you...

Another thought came to mind as devotees of Krishna we never need to feel that sight-seeing is complete in itself, unless of course, we're speaking about tirthas (sacred places). We always have something to contribute wherever we are. We pick up some instruments and sit down somewhere and project out devotional songs.

Nityananda Chandra Das, Dallas TX: TEXAS FAITH 53: Why Should We Be Thankful?

Dallas Morning News,
Each week we will post a question to a panel of about two dozen clergy, laity and theologians, all of whom are based in Texas or are from Texas. They will chime in with their responses to the question of the week. And you, readers, will be able to respond to their answers through the comment box.

Thanksgiving Day.

It's a holiday that many people often say is their favorite one. No gifts to buy. No parties to attend. Just families and friends sharing a meal around the table.
But why should we be thankful?
The nation faces a massive debt. Washington is polarized. We're at war to keep terrorists from striking us. Poverty rates are alarming. The gap between rich and the middle class is widening. And that's before you even get off the front page.

So, why should we be thankful? And what should we be thankful for, either personally or at the larger national/global level?

NITYANANDA CHANDRA DAS, minister of ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness), Dallas

Thanksgiving is a beautiful day wherein we lovingly gather around the table and all are very happy, all except for the innocent bird who has a knife in its back.

We all have many things to be thankful for. Number one is God, who arranges for all our facilities of life. Whenever there is a deficiency, we can see that deficiency either due to nature responding to our misuse and exploitative tendencies or directly in relation to our misuse and exploitative tendencies.

God does not only provide all of our subsistence but also arranges the education by which we can solve all of our problems by becoming fully God conscious. He teaches us how we can live sanely with such precepts as "Thou Shall Not Kill."

By God's will, He sometimes descends to this world as an avatar in His own form such as Krishna, Buddha, Rama and so on. Or sometimes He sends one of His unlimited sons, such as Jesus (or daughters) and empowers him to teach on His behalf.

This brings us to number two: We can be thankful for God's pure devotees, those who help others by teaching them how to be free from all distresses. By reawakening our natural relationship as a servants of God, such teachers teach by their example so that spiritual life can understood beyond the theoretical platform.

We have many, many other debts or persons to whom we should be grateful too, but none of them carry such weight as the first two choices.

eanargyrou@yahoo.com

Visit her blog "Light Up Your Soul":

Here is her free offer for you:

Dear Akrura,

As I mentioned to you, I am working on a project I call "Give it Back", this is a service I am very happy to be engaged in, as it has already helped several young and talented individuals from different countries, who would otherwise not think about the benefits that coaching has to offer them.

I am excited about this project because I am thoroughly inspired to help others live the fullest expression of who they really are. Helping people find their wings and watch them soar makes me come alive. It is amazing to see how even one powerful coaching session can ignite clarity, strength and creativity and motivate individuals to take steps to live their lives to the fullest.

Within the "Give it Back" project, I am offering a limited number of free coaching sessions to a limited number of people until December of this year. One conversation is already enough to bring people's current reality in alignment with their own vision of their best life.

The minimum time my clients commit to working with me for is 6 months. This is an opportunity for someone to reap benefits in only one conversation with me.

If you know of someone who would benefit from having a conversation with a coach who will support them by working with their fears and obstacles to allow transformation to happen, please let them know of this service work I am offering.

Karnamrita das, NC, USA: Love is the Answer Part 1

Pure children
With the inspiration of Saint Francis, a great mystic in the Christian tradition, I am exploring his famous prayer since it seems very much in the mood of our great Vaishnava saints and bhakti yogis. I spoke of sowing peace in a recent blog which began my thinking of his prayer. Whereas peace may be a kind of passive, inactive state of being, it requires to be coupled with love to realize its full potential. A progressive idea of love is that love is an action word, or verb, and not merely a feeling, or noun. “Love is as love does,” expresses this idea, and is the basis of bhakti or devotional service, with the additional idea of being part of the soul’s spiritual relationship with God. If it is really true that “love makes the world go around,” or that hate is the basis of many world conflicts, then it is essential to think about and understand these opposite states or energies.

Spiritual Scientist: Concerned but not disturbed by change

The world around us is subject to constant change: change that is often unstoppable, uncontrollable and unpredictable. The Bhagavad-gita (2.14-16) explains that the best way to cope with change is to focus on the unchangeable: our spiritual nature and our spiritual connection with Krishna.

This focus energizes us with the confidence that no external change can:

1. Harm our essence, our indestructible souls

2. Stop Krishna from loving us

3. Stop us from remembering Krishna and experiencing his loving shelter.

Awareness of these unchangeable realities of life reassures us that, no matter how stormy the wind of change that blows around us, it can never change the ground under us. Knowing that external change can’t affect our core identity, we don’t become disturbed by it and so don’t get broken down or blown away by it. At the same time, knowing that external change does affect our circumstantial activity, we don’t deny or neglect the change; with due concern, we do the needful to deal with it.

The material body is simply a covering of the self. It is not the actual self. Sense gratification is necessary to keep the external body strong and healthy. But if one thinks that he can be happy simply by polishing the cage of the bird without feeding the bird within, he is living in a grand illusion. It is useless to simply take care of the body while neglecting the self within. This misplacement of priorities is the great tragedy of the modern so-called civilization. Dear Spiritual Master, Please accept my humble obeisances. Does Maya test us all the time in order to fix our faith in Krishna? Krishna says that He will deliver us from all sinful reactions? When does this take place? Thank you Sujata Answer: We Are Always Being Tested We are being tested at every minute whether we are remembering Krishna or not. When we fully surrender ourselves to Krishna, He delivers us from all of our sinful reactions.
