For Transcendental Association Connect With Other Members of this Course. Join this Conference: http://groups.google.com/group/sda_students Today's Thought: Celebrate the Ecstatic Reality Uploaded from on the road to Sliven, Bulgaria The real ecstatic reality is that we are all eternal spirit-souls, each possessing a unique ecstatic loving relationships with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. So why should we suffer unnecessarily in this material existence? This does not make any sense. All we have to do is revive our actual identities and celebrate forever in a festival of divine love with the Supreme Lord. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Home Program--Nassebar, Bulgaria 8 September 2011 http://www.backtohome.com/images/2011-Fall/Nassebar1.JPG http://www.backtohome.com/images/2011-Fall/Nassebar2.JPG Answers by Citing the Vedic Version: Question: Liberated Soul Can Become Conditioned? it is said that we have an eternal relationship with Lord Krishna. This means we had this relationship from time immemorial. Now let us consider a particular time when we were conditioned. Does this not mean that we were previously liberated? So, how can someone be conditioned after liberation? If we were conditioned from the beginning, then how can we say, back to Godhead? If we can be conditioned even after liberation, what is the meaning of sat cit ananda (eternity, knowledge, and bliss)? Please elaborate on this and bless me with a better understanding of Krishna and liberation. Subrahmanyam, Answer: By Misuse of Independence Previously we were liberated in our eternal relationships with Krishna. That's a fact. But just as a free, liberated citizen can become a criminal due to a misuse of his freedom and consequently become arrested and put into prison, in the same way if a liberated soul misuses his independence, he will be imprisoned within this material existence. Each of us has an eternal nature of sat, cit, and ananda (eternity, knowledge, and bliss). But just as gold can be covered by dirt, our eternal sat-cit-ananda natures have become covered by asat, acit, and nirananda (temporality, ignorance and misery.) The good news it that by taking seriously to the pathway of self-realization we can in one lifetime revive our original sat-cit-ananda, liberated natures and return to our eternal relationships with the Lord in the spiritual sky. Japa Group: Reflections After Each Session

The Japa Room is approaching and my thoughts turn to the discussion subject - this week were are reflecting on our daily notes on Japa....how we felt or experienced...maybe something we tried that helped us improve...reflections after each session of chanting.

It will be interesting and inspiring to hear the different devotees reflect on their realisations. I will talk mainly on this but also introduce a new subject....last week we focused on determination in chanting and I used a nice quote to illustrate the point.

Even there may be some problems, always try to remain in Krishna Consciousness. Do not give up chanting simply due to some external difficulties. Under all circumstance you should always chant Hare Krishna.

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Honouring Bhaktivinoda Thakur. The Precept to ISKCON & the Worldwide Sankirtan Movement

Picture
Today marks the appearance day of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur.  We do not normally repost but was reading the blog post we posted just over 2 months ago glorifying Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur and felt compelled to repeat this glorification of such an exalted Vaishnava personality.
Our dandavats again and again to Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur...
____

How do you adequately glorify such an exalted devotee of the Lord? Do we glorify how he uplifted Vaishnava Siddhanta which had eroded significantly? Do we praise his commitment to Vaishnva theology despite being born into opulent circumstances and having government responsibilities? Do we glorify his sadhana where he kept a very regulated schedule in order to further Mahaprabhu's mission? Do we praise his discovery of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's birthplace? Or perhaps do we glorify what perhaps made him the happiest...the rapid spread of the glorification of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Krishna!

Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur would stay up until the late hours of the night writing, translating, commenting and annotating vedic texts. He published in English and sent the books to other corners of the world! The first globalization of the sankirtan movement. These books landed in Britain, Germany, America and yes even in Canada at our very own McGill University. Not only were the books recieved but they were read and recieved acclaim and thus the bhrad-mrdanga started...the broadcasting of this transcedental knowledge all over the globe.

In his writings, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur stated, "Soon there will appear a personality who will preach the holy name of Hari all over the world.” And this was mere months before the appearance of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada. Meditate on that single statement for a few moments to appreciate the gravity of this prediction. And there is more...much much more. For example, Srila Bhakitvinoda Thakur avidly wrote a magazine journal called Sajjana-Tosani in which he writes, "Oh for that day when the fortunate English, French, Russian, German, and American people with take up banners, mrdangas, and kartalas and raise kirtan through their streets and towns."

And thus in the title the declaration that Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur represents the precept to ISKCON and the worldwide sankirtan movement!

Jaya Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur!

I know there are many distractions and much to read so we are trying to keep our posts short but we really want to share one wonderful quote...

“There is no vow like chanting the holy name, no knowledge superior to it,
no meditation which comes anywhere near it, and it gives the highest
result. No penance is equal to it, and nothing is as potent or powerful as
the holy name. Chanting is the greatest act of piety and the supreme
refuge. Even the words of the Vedas do not possess sufficient power to
describe its magnitude. Chanting is the highest path to liberation, peace
and eternal life. It’s the pinnacle of devotion, the heart’s joyous
proclivity and attraction and the best form of remembrance of the Supreme
Lord. The holy name has appeared solely for the benefit of the living
entities as their lord and master, their supreme worshipful object and
their spiritual guide and mentor. Whoever continuously chants Lord
Krishna’s holy name, even in his sleep, can easily realize that the name is
a direct manifestation of Krishna Himself, in spite of the influences of
Kali-yuga.”

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Srila Prabhupada has linked us to Srila Jiva Goswami and Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura

Picture
In many press reports and introductions, this Krishna Consciousness movement is still regarded as something relatively new and from the 60's. However in reality our ever well-wisher, Srila Prabhupada with his unlimited mercy and has linked us  to the personalities such as Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur, Srila Jiva Goswami and beyond to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Himself.

With the mercy of Srila Prabhupada this tree contains some undeserving leaves like myself, however it is my duty to try to honour the thick branches, trunk and roots that make this tree so sturdy and ever growing. The opportunity to honour and glorify are due to the fact that it was Srila Jiva Goswami's Appearance day yesterday and today is the Appearance day of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur.

So in this post we will humbly submit a few words to honour, Srila Jiva Goswami...

Srila Prabhupada stated, "The Vaishnavas are by far the greatest philosophers in the world, and the greatest among them was Srila Jiva Goswami".

Srila Jiva Goswami was a prolific writer and he wrote 25 works in sanskrit with a total of over 400,000 sanskrit verses! He became a great  preceptor of the Gaudiya Sampradaya, as blessed and predicted by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
Srila Jiva Goswami is one of the revered Six Goswamis of Vrindavan and the nephew of Srila Rupa and Sanatana Goswami. He is credited for establishing the prominent Radha Damodara temple which is  so dear to Srila Prabhupada and his followers. Srila Jiva Goswami personally managed this temple as well as Govindaji, Madana Mohana and Gopinatha temples and also assisted Raghunatha Dasa Goswami in the excavation of Radha Kunda.

So great was Srila Jiva Goswami's bhakti and mastery of Krishna Conscious philosophy that in 1573 the Moghul Emperor, Akbar came to see the Goswamis of Vrindavan and after meeting Srila Jiva Goswami he became enthralled with the works of the six Goswamis.

Jaya Srila Jiva Goswami!

Giridhari das, Brasilia, Brazil: Cooking Retreat in Pandavas Paradise

From the 2nd  to 7th of September we held a cooking retreat in Pandavas Paradise, led by Carana Renu Dasi.

People came seeking a chance to enhance their vegetarian cooking repertoire as well as to enjoy the regular benefits of a retreat here, namely peace, contact with nature and a chance to deepen their spirituality.

Carana Renu chose varied menus over the five days, including Indian, Italian, Mexican and Chinese dishes. More importantly she taught them the principle of doing everything for Krishna, cleanliness in the kitchen and other aspects of prasadam preparation. Not only that but they also had a lot of fun in the kitchen, as you can see from the photos.

The guests had a good time making chapatis, samosas, calzones, etc.

We also had walks to the waterfalls and our lookout point, which the guests always love…

…though probably not as much as they love eating the prasadam!

On the first night I spoke about the importance of eating prasadam and the modes of nature.  On the second night they saw a documentary on the importance of a healthy diet. The third and fourth nights were question and answer sessions on all topics related to spirituality, Krishna Consciousness and yoga.

We also had a 30 minute japa session every day, as well as kirtans and aratiks.

All in all a successful retreat, with happy guests who got to come a little closer to Krishna consciousness, learn lots of delicious vegetarian recipes, eat lots of prasadam and relax!

Here are comments left by three of our guests:

"It was much more than a 'vegetarian cooking course'. In truth in was an immersion in a universe of aromas and flavors, with the song of birds and mantras as the soundtrack. If we are what we eat, this experience allowed us to be much better. Hare Krishna!" – Celeste, Belo Horizonte – MG.

"Thank you, Charana, for sharing with us valuable information about your cooking, which brought us to higher states. This retreat was not only incredibly delicious, it also provided a deep comfort to the soul, through the sincere hospitality, the sharing of spiritual knowledge and the impressive natural setting. I leave Pandavas Paradise transformed and with the certainty of having made one of the best investments in my wellbeing.  Hare Krishna!" – Rachel, Rio de Janeiro – RJ

"The days I spent in Pandavas Paradise were absolutely incredible. I enjoyed an exuberant natural setting, with walks and swimming in the waterfalls, while at the same time learning delicious vegetarian recipes, as well as Giridhari's enriching teachings. I had the chance to reflect on my life in a way that I could never have done in my regular day to day life, in a welcoming and very peaceful environment. Charana and Giridhari, thank you!" – Emerson, Brasília – DF

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: INTERPERSONAL AND INTERNAL QUESTIONS

Internal questions program our thoughts, feelings, actions, and outcomes.

We are unaware how influential they are.

For example, our questions while getting dressed influence behavior, i.e., what we will choose to put on.

Internal questions are important because they are the basis of how human beings think and make decisions.

Internal questions are the source of both effective and ineffective decision making.

Coach helps client discover questions that might be impending progress.

Coach helps to design new, productive questions that would facilitate client's ability to reach his goals.

Internal questions shape the course of external, interpersonal dialogues.

Both verbal and nonverbal behavior can be seen as answers to preceeding internal questions.

What we say to others is simply an external voicing of the answers to questions we have formed within ourselves.

Coach needs to be aware of his own internal questions during a coaching session.

New Vrndavan, USA: Thank you for this Festival Season

Dear Brijabasis,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

I would like to thank all the devotees wholeheartedly for their incredible service during the festival season which just ended with the Labour Day weekend. It was a long, tiring season. Through our endeavor, however we have given thousands of pilgrims a transcendental experience.

The feedback I received this morning from different visitors was very inspiring. Pilgrims see a change in New Vrindaban and motivate all of us to continue on the Sankirtana path. By Sri Sri Radha Vrindaban Chandra’s grace, the devotees have served the pilgrims nicely and connected them to Krsna through darshan, lectures, kirtan, prasadam and many personal interactions.

There are too many devotees to name in person, but I would like to mention some of them especially for their wonderful contribution during the season and for the last two big events, Janmastami and Radhastami.

First Shanka Prabhu who cooked three meals a day for the last two festivals and cooked so nicely during the whole summer. The pujaris, under the guidance of Mother Vani, dressed Their Lordships in such an attractive manner and made the darshan for everybody so exciting. The CD department members invited the pilgrims and donors, and took care of them so nicely. The devotees at the lodge made the guests feel at home and increased the quality of our accommodation substantially. The devotees at the Palace are taking care of the gardens with love and dedication. The Palace tour guides with their attractive preaching, the team at Govinda’s snack bar, the devotees taking care of the grounds making NV look neat and clean, the lecturers and story tellers, the devotees taking care of the cows, the devotees at the Small Farm Training Centre, the security guards, the kirtanias, and, and, and …

Thank you all of you. I am sure Srila Prabhupada and Krsna are pleased by the service you are rendering.

Your servant,
Jaya Krsna das

Desolate and lone
All night long on the lake
Where fog trails and mist creeps,
The whistle of a boat
Calls and cries unendingly,
Like some lost child
In tears and trouble
Hunting the harbor’s breast
And the harbor’s eyes.

Madhavendra Puri, New Govardhana, AU: Class on Surrender (Poland - 2011)

Nitai asked me to give class on Polish Tour from the Prayers of Queen Kunti.  The verse was SB1.8.37 and I chose to speak about surrender.

[Click this LINK to access the lecture.]

The Translation and Purport are on the audio but are as follows:

TRANSLATION

O my Lord, You have executed all duties Yourself. Are you leaving us today, though we are completely dependent on Your mercy and have no one else to protect us, now when all kings are at enmity with us?

PURPORT

The Pandavas are most fortunate because with all good luck they were entirely dependent on the mercy of the Lord. In the material world, to be dependent on the mercy of someone else is the utmost sign of misfortune, but in the case of our transcendental relation with the Lord, it is the most fortunate case when we can live completely dependent on Him. The material disease is due to thinking of becoming independent of everything. But the cruel material nature does not allow us to become independent. The false attempt to become independent of the stringent laws of nature is known as material advancement of experimental knowledge. The whole material world is moving on this false attempt of becoming independent of the laws of nature. Beginning from Ravana, who wanted to prepare a direct staircase to the planets of heaven, down to the present age, they are trying to overcome the laws of nature. They are trying now to approach distant planetary systems by electronic mechanical power. But the highest goal of human civilization is to work hard under the guidance of the Lord and become completely dependent on Him. The highest achievement of perfect civilization is to work with valor but at the same time depend completely on the Lord. The Pandavas were the ideal executors of this standard of civilization. Undoubtedly they were completely dependent on the good will of Lord Sri Krsna, but they were not idle parasites of the Lord. They were all highly qualified both by personal character and by physical activities. Still they always looked for the mercy of the Lord because they knew that every living being is dependent by constitutional position. The perfection of life is, therefore, to become dependent on the will of the Lord, instead of becoming falsely independent in the material world. Those who try to become falsely independent of the Lord are called anätha, or without any guardian, whereas those who are completely dependent on the will of the Lord are called sanätha, or those having someone to protect them. Therefore we must try to be sanätha so that we can always be protected from the unfavorable condition of material existence. By the deluding power of the external material nature we forget that the material condition of life is the most undesirable perplexity. The Bhagavad-gita therefore directs us (7.19) that after many, many births one fortunate person becomes aware of the fact that Väsudeva is all in all and that the best way of leading one's life is to surrender unto Him completely. That is the sign of a mahätmä. All the members of the Pandava family were mahatmas in household life. Maharaja Yudhisthira was the head of these mahatmas, and Queen Kuntidevi was the mother. The lessons of the Bhagavad-gita and all the Puranas, specifically the Bhagavata Purana, are therefore inevitably connected with the history of the Pandava mahatmas. For them, separation from the Lord was just like the separation of a fish from water. Srimati Kuntidevi, therefore, felt such separation like a thunderbolt, and the whole prayer of the Queen is to try to persuade the Lord to stay with them. After the Battle of Kuruksetra, although the inimical kings were killed, their sons and grandsons were still there to deal with the Pandavas. It is not only the Pandavas who were put into the condition of enmity, but all of us are always in such a condition, and the best way of living is to become completely dependent on the will of the Lord and thereby overcome all difficulties of material existence.
