The beat of different drums

A brief auto-biography of Jayadeva das Prabhu

By Patita Pavana das Adhikary

I define a good day as one when I have had the pleasure of reading a good book. And by that definition, today was a very good day because I was curled up with Jayadeva das' The Beat of Different Drums. And I say emphatically that this was one of the very best books that I have ever read.

But first, you ask, what makes a good book? As Shrila Prabhupada points out, "Lord Chaitanya ordered His disciples to write books on the science of Krishna consciousness, a process that those who follow Him carry out to the present day." And the auto-biography of John Richardson, who devotees know and love as Jayadeva Prabhu, fits that qualification nicely. His soon-to-be-released bio is not only well-written and saturated with humor and adventure but it brims with a subtle undercurrent of Lord Krishna's Divine Hand at work on each page. By the grace of Shrila Prabhupada and the spiritual master who initiated Jayadeva and his family, HH Shivarama Swami, I can declare that no book quite like this one has ever been written before.

Australian News: ISKCON Singapore 2011 Ratha Yatra

On the 24th August 2011, more than 2500 devotees and members of the public
took part in the Jaganatha Ratha Yatra festival organized by Caitanya
Cultural Society in Singapore.

A huge 15-feet high silver ratha (made out of 4500kg of silver) was brought
from the Perumal Temple and was initially meant to be used for the Ratha
Yatra. However, owing to its height the Silver Ratha could not enter the Toa
Payoh stadium. With immense enthusiasm and within a few hours time the
devotees made another Ratha cart suitable for stadium and improvised a new
program.

The first part of the program was an hour-long ratha yatra procession in the
parking area outside the stadium starting at 5 p. m. Sri Sri Gaura Nitai
were placed in the Silver Ratha and all the devotees was in ecstasy seeing
Their beautiful forms. It was the desire of Their Lordships Sri Sri Gaura
Nitai to bless the audience.

Then at 6 p. m. all the devotees entered the stadium with kirtan. HG Charu
Chandra Prabhu (General Secretary, ISKCON Bangladesh) performed Maha aratika
for Their Lordships Sri Sri Jagannatha, Balabhadra and Subhadra Maiya who
comfortably seated on the newly built ratha. Then, with the auspicious
sounds of the conch shell being blown and a melodious Hare Krishna Maha
mantra Kirtan led by Mathura Jivan Prabhu from Vrindavan and Cidananda
Krishna das from Bangladesh, the devotees began the second ratha-yatra
procession.

Many dignitaries attended the Ratha Yatra festival and performed puja and
abhisekha. Among them was the retired SP Mr Raja Gopal, DSP Mr Ram Singh,
and the president of Bengali associates Mr. Nikhilesh Gupta. Mr. Ranjit, a
lawyer from Singapore, was the co-ordinator for this Ratha Yatra festival
and is helping devotees to legally establish Krishna consciousness in
Singapore.

While the procession was marching ahead, respected people from Singapore
came forward to worship Sri Jagannath, Baladeva and Subhadra by offering a
lamp, garlands, fruits and other bhoga items. (There was a counter opened
for Bhoga offerings).

As soon as the lights were turned on at 7:00pm the whole stadium looked like
Vaikuntha (see photos). The procession rounded the stadium four times with
ecstatic chanting and dancing and at 8:00pm the festival came to an end.

HG Charu Chandra Prabhu explained the significance of Ratha Yatra and also
quoting from ancient Vedic literature mentioned how Ratha Yatra is the
oldest festival celebrated on the earth. The first Ratha Yatra procession
took place approximately 3.5 crore years ago. The other speakers, namely HG
Bhadra Govinda Prabhu, HG Chidananda Prabhu and myself spoke about the other
details of the festival and highlighted the importance of maintaining the
spiritual culture of the nation and bringing all people closer to God to
experience a life of inner fulfillment.

At the end more than 2000 plates of delicious Prasadam were distributed. At
around 9 p. m. the silver rath cart was towed back to the Perumal temple for
a distance of about 12 kilometres by a pick-up van which had the Hare
Krishna maha-mantra kirtan resounding from its sound system. The silver rath
was moving slowly and was very well lit and nicely decorated. The sight of
the rath and the sound of the holy names blaring from the sound system was
an unusual experience for the local residents, who came out of the
surrounding shops and buildings to see the cart. Some of them stood on their
balconies to watch as it passed by. Many of them came forward and offered
their respects and obeisances to Their Lordships Sri Sri Gaura Nitai.

Sri Jagannatha Ratha Yatra ki jaya!

So full advantage of advanced association and become a first class devotee. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Answers by Citing the Vedic Version: Question: Why is Krishna Accepted as Supreme? Hare Krishna, Guru Maharaja, Why does ISKCON accept Krishna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead? What is the position of the devatas and avatars? Your servant, R.K. Answer: Vedas and Great Sages Confirm This ISKCON accepts Krishna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead because this is the ultimate conclusion of the Vedic literatures and all the great acharyas. And this is confirmed by Sri Arjuna as follows in the Bhagavad-gita: arjuna uvca param brahma param dhma pavitram paramam bhavn purusam vatam divyam di-devam ajam vibhum hus tvm rsayah sarve devarsir nradas tath asito devalo vysah svayam caiva bravsi me Arjuna said: You are the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the ultimate abode, the purest, the Absolute Truth. You are the eternal, transcendental, original person, the unborn, the greatest. All the great sages such as Narada, Asita, Devala and Vyasa confirm this truth about You, and now You Yourself are declaring it to me. ---Bhagavad-gita 10.12-13 The devatas or demigods are the various controllers of the universal affairs such as the wind and the rain. They are servants of the Supreme Lord. They are not the Supreme Lord. The different avatars such as Lord Rama and Lord Nrsimhadeva are Krishna Himself manifesting in different pastimes for the pleasure and protection of His devotees. Jahnavi, UK: Brushfire before Bhaktifest

I’m flying again tomorrow morning after a month back at home. It’s been a whirlwind of festivities, guests, and all sorts of events. In between everything I managed to sneak in some much needed time for painting. It’s something I always want to do – most of the time I travel with a whole art studio’s worth of materials in my suitcase that do nothing but weight me down. But last week for a sweet four hours I just lost myself in it.

Hanuman's Jungle Song

Singing His Name

Lavanya Rama

Now I’m headed to California for Bhaktifest, a weekend of kirtan in the Joshua Tree desert. If you would like to have a copy of any of these paintings, I got some beautiful cards printed which I’ll have there with me. It was quite exciting to see my artwork being printed for the first time. Check out the company – moo.com, their products are great!

Kurma dasa, AU: Bakewell - Such a Tart!

I grew up eating Bakewell Tarts - the archtypical sweet treat for those with 'sweet tooths' and 'stiff upper lips' (apparently there are surgeons that can fix that these days).

bakewell:

Since the aforementioned tarts usually contain eggs, and since I have not eaten an egg since 1971, I pretty much gave up on ever tasting a Bakewell until yesterday. Trust fellow-food-blogger Sanjana to come up with a fraffly spiffing, googyless recipe, eh what!

Here it is. Peaches are not back in season yet in Orstraylia, but I am sure you'll come up with a substitute, like pears, mangoes etc. Or you can wait until the first peach appears in the shops in a few months time. Feast on this!

Japa Group: Chanting Answers The Questions

Hare Krsna my dear devotees. Today I heard a devotee talking about Srila Prabhupada pastimes and he said that once he wrote to him saying that he felt lonely without his presence and that he did not know what to do when difficulties happened, so Srila Prabhupada told him that chanting the holy names will help you and everything you need to know will come from within.

This was so strong to me that I felt like I had seen this before, so many times after chanting many things I needed to know came to my mind and realizations as well. It was amazing. Maybe you have felt the same.

This is the power of the Holy Names - we are never alone, the Lord is present through chanting all the time by our sides telling us what to do and where to go....nothing can go wrong when we depend on Krsna in all aspects of our lives...He is always there for us.

May your week be blessed by the Lord with great chanting.

your servant,

Aruna
