The Bhagavad-gita (10.10) points to the devotional dynamics that comprise buddhi-yoga (the yoga of wisdom). The dynamics underlying this compound word buddhi-yoga are twofold:
The yoga that awards buddhi: When we serve Krishna by engaging in the yoga of love (bhakti-yoga), he grants us the wisdom and the vision (buddhi) to see beyond the daily reality that usually occupies our eyes and minds. The philosophical vision provided by the Gita helps focus our attention on the eternal spiritual reality that is permeated with beauty and ecstasy.
The buddhi that awards yoga: When we use this philosophical vision to serve Krishna and fulfill his benevolent purposes in this world, he purifies and raises our consciousness to the pure, selfless, loving level that is necessary for attaining the spiritual realm. There we are forever connected with Krishna in an ecstatic re-union of love, which is the culmination of all yoga.
Thus the Gita’s philosophy gifts us the eyes to see Krishna’s world of love and the Gita’s devotional practices grant us the wings to lovingly fly back to that world.

In the late seventies, I was staying in the Amsterdam temple. My service was to bring the laundry from all the sankirtan devotees in the morning and take them to the laundrette, which was on the corner. So with this huge bundle of dhotis, I felt like a donkey on its last legs – a bundle with legs going to the laundrette, and then I would drop it off. As soon as I left, on the opposite of the laundrette, there was the Dutch society for the sexually reformed, and as they were Dutch – they were into it. They had poster of every type of sex, with a phone number, for you to ring, if you were interested – for more information.
So I had to walk past there everyday, but somehow or other Lord Caitanya protected me! So that element is there, but then we know that there is a fine line:
‘I didn’t stop. I saw what I saw. What can you do? But I didn’t have a good look!’
Nowadays, it’s on the Internet, and many devotees have problems with the Internet. They surf and come across something on the wrong site, and before you know it, they keep on doing it! It becomes an addiction. Well then of course, that is very detrimental, and we are really creating a negative sanskaars, which are hard to break! So computers actually are causing many devotees to fall down!

One may look at mundane movies and where there is a scene, which is a little bit too much, then one would say:
“I’m not watching those. I am really not affect by that. They don’t affect me…It doesn’t do anything to me”.
They create seeds and will go out somewhere else… later on. So one must be careful about these seed principle……………..in the same way one may study the mayavadi literature just to get some arguments to defeat it! Then there is an element of becoming a mayavadi, but later on they may become one. There is an example of some devotees who did exactly that and later on they did become mayavads.
So the vaisnavas should just fill their time with Krishna, and basically fight with other things, like for example mundane movies – to fight with these things when it is so hard to resist, which basically means that we are not sufficiently preoccupied with Krishna conscious activities! Because if one is sufficiently engaged, then there is no time for such things. See so that is not an issue, but it means that our devotional life and our cultivation are meagre – we haven’t sufficiently filled our life with Krishna and that is actually the case of many.
Of course, in many of us there is some Krishna within our life, but we should really add a lot more! There maybe unavoidable issues like work, where it may be a little difficult to always be preoccupied with Krishna, although some devotees do it very well. I know someone who translated books for BBT at work, which were quite a number of books, but not everyone can get away with things like that. But we are not speaking about work, but the rest of the time, when we could fill it with hearing about Krishna more, and remembering about Krishna more, and a then automatically all the other things will disappear!
"You must make sure that all of these devotees are following the regulative principles very nicely. Everyone must rise early, take bath attend mangala arati, chant at least 16 good rounds, attend class, and follow the four regulative principles strictly. If these things are lax, then there is no question of spiritual life."

Work done on the roof and domes presented by Gopisa:
Status: foam roof recoated, the flat section completely sealed, all the drains opened to the maximum capacity
Sealant applied to all domes, front dome still has small leak, leaking is coming from the domes not from the flat section, especially from the top of the domes
There is still a remaining leak in the front foyer. The front dome has to be finished.
Kayafas Architects – they currently work on the specs for the front stairs this service will be covered by the work paid so far for the bid package for the new flat roof which was not used. We are hoping to additionally receive design and prints for permanent repair of the domes as part of the exchange.
Structure
In a small area just loose sand and pebbles have been found around the front dome instead of strong concrete. Concerns have been raised that the main structure of the Palace may be compromised.
Kayafas Architects contacted the engineers who worked on the Palace before. An external company will be consulted by the engineer to check the concrete under the marble with x-ray or ultrasound technology. There is no quote so far for the tests.
Gift shop
Kayafas Architects presented a basic design and estimates.
The activities on the gift shop will be continued once we have assurance that the main structure of the Palace is sound.
Front steps
Two bids received for the upper front stairs.
Al’s masonry is the lower bid; about $60.000.
Dave would like to work during the winter on the steps. Samples are at the temple for the new material to use.
Decision to take from our side:
i. what kind of material to use – all new material from local source or other?
ii. Discuss with Soma or somebody in the area to do the job, or engage Dave from Al’s masonry.
It is planned to do the job in spring before the tourist season starts.

This short snippet of one of our discussions shows the rhythm of active hearing. One devotee expresses her understanding of Srila Prabhupada and then her discussion partners reflect back to her what she has said. I am posting this not for the sake of sharing our philosophical insights, but just to share the rhythm of the discussion. Please specially note the use of some protocols we use that make the discussion gentler and sweeter. For example, we always ask if we’ve properly understood, and if the devotee speaking would like to say more. If some one understands us, we always thank them and let them know if they’ve properly understood us, or if we need to clarify. We try hard not to be confrontational, but to be supportive and appreciative….that encourages us to keep meeting.

The 2012 North American Governing Body and Temple President meetings opened on January 13, in Dallas, Texas, with more than sixty leaders from across the US and Canada in attendance. During the meeting it was noted, in a somber tone, that the Youth Fund, i.e. the funds required to settle the child abuse lawsuit that was filed in 2000 against some NA ISKCON temples, has been successfully fulfilled
Krishna was also named “Gopal” because of his service to the cows. Krishna would take the cows in the forests and would even milk cows while staying in Braj. He treated cows with utmost care. When he would play flute cows would stop eating and start crying. As Krishna went to Mathura cows would not even eat, they were deeply saddened by krishna’s absence
Eminent scholars, scientists and philosophers have recognised the profound wisdom that the Bhagavad-gita offers. Gandhi once commented, “When doubts haunt me, when disappointments stare me in the face, and I see not one ray of hope on the horizon, I turn to Bhagavad-gita and find a verse to comfort me. I immediately begin to smile in the midst of overwhelming sorrow. Those who meditate on the Gita will derive fresh joy and new meanings from it every day.”
What follows is a humble attempt to bring together some insights in the form of a short overview of the Bhagavad-gita. My aim is not to draw out every single philosophical point, but rather to highlight key concepts in each chapter. Hopefully this overview will assist readers in understanding the flow, context and practical application of these timeless spiritual teachings. It may also assist teachers of the Bhagavad-gita in their attempts to share this wisdom with others.
This small booklet is based on the Bhagavad-gita As It Is, translated by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. His translation has revolutionised modern thinking, and each purport elucidates the incredibly profound life lessons that Lord Krishna imparts to Arjuna. I hope this humble attempt to share some of that wisdom will inspire the reader to study Srila Prabhupada’s full translation which can answer every question, remove every doubt, and ultimately bring one face-to-face with Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Above all, I undertook this exercise for my own spiritual growth, praying that someday I will genuinely live by these teachings.
If solar energy is eventually going to matter — that is, generate a significant portion of the nation’s electricity — the industry must overcome a major stumbling block, experts say: finding a way to store it for use when the sun isn’t shining.

That challenge seems to be creating an opening for a different form of power, solar thermal, which makes electricity by using the sun’s heat to boil water. The water can be used to heat salt that stores the energy until later, when the sun dips and households power up their appliances and air-conditioning at peak demand hours in the summer.
Two California companies are planning to deploy the storage technology: SolarReserve, which is building a plant in the Nevada desert scheduled to start up next year, and BrightSource, which plans three plants in California that would begin operating in 2016 and 2017. Together, the four projects will be capable of powering tens of thousand of households throughout a summer evening.
Whether the technology will be widely adopted remains to be seen, but companies like Google, Chevron and Good Energies are investing in it, and the utilities NV Energy and Southern California Edison have signed long-term contracts to buy power from these radically different new power plants.
One crucial role of the plants will be complementing solar panels, which produce electricity directly from sunlight. When the panels ramp down at dusk or on cloudy days, the plants will crank up, drawing on the stored thermal energy.
That job will become more important if photovoltaic panels, which have plunged in price lately, become even cheaper and sprout on millions of rooftops. As the grid starts depending more heavily on solar panels or wind turbines, it will need other energy sources that can step in quickly to balance the system — preferably ones classified as renewable.
Most utilities are trying to generate as many kilowatt-hours of renewable energy as they can to meet stiffer state requirements on incorporating more alternative energy, said Kevin B. Smith, the chief executive of SolarReserve.
“As we move forward, we’ll get more and more traction with the fact we can provide more capacity,” Mr. Smith said, referring to his company’s storage technology.
The Energy Department seems to agree: in September it gave SolarReserve a $737 million loan guarantee for its project in Nevada. The plant will generate 110 megawatts at peak and store enough heat to run for eight to 10 hours when the sun is not shining.
The public’s view on loan guarantees for solar projects has soured somewhat since the bankruptcy of Solyndra, a California company that received a $535 million loan guarantee to build a factory to make solar panels — only to see the market for the modules crash.
But the outlook has always been clearer for companies that make electricity, which, unlike solar modules, is generally presold by contract.
Technical details of the SolarReserve and BrightSource plants vary slightly, but both will use thousands of computer-operated poster-size mirrors aiming sunlight at a tower that absorbs it as heat.
SolarReserve absorbs the heat in molten salt, which can be used immediately to boil water, generating steam that turns a conventional turbine and generator. Hot salt can also be used to retain the heat for many hours for later use. BrightSource heats water that can be used immediately as steam or to heat salt for storage.
The plants rely on salt because it can store far more heat than water can. But once molten, it must be kept that way or it will freeze to a solid in part of the plant where it will be difficult to melt again. “You’ve made a commitment to those salt molecules,” said John Woolard, the chief executive of BrightSource.
The technology is not complicated, but the economics are.

On the evening of January 5, New Vrindaban Community hosted a memorial celebration for Yamuna devi dasi, one of the earliest disciples of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the Founder-Acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. During the memorial, Sri Sri Radha Vrindabanchandra temple was filled with nectar about the life of Yamuna devi dasi. Even if you did not know Yamuna personally, by the end of the evening you felt as if Yamuna had been one of your ever well-wishers all along.
The evening began with an introduction by Malati Prabhu, along with the efficient help of Rasikananda das. The congregation then sang “Je Anilo” lead by the beautifully smooth voice of Karnamrita dasi over the telephone air waves.
Then there were three wonderful talks given by Yamuna herself. First she spoke of how each and every one of Srila Prabhupada’s temples is a holy dhama. Then, she emphasized that respect amongst one another is even more important than love. And finally she told “The Rice Story”.
Once in India, Yamuna and Kausalya dasi were traveling with Srila Prabhupada on a train and he suddenly asked them for some hot rice. Seems like a simple request to us, but in an overcrowded dusty, ashy, very long train speeding across India, this was no small task. After walking the full length of 12 cars, they finally found the cook, who flatly refused to let them cook anything for anyone. This conversation took place on the little rickety platform between 2 cars. So Yamuna looked down and declared, “If you don’t let me cook rice for my spiritual master, I’ll jump off this train to my death!!” Well, that worked, and Srila Prabhupada got the rice and everyone (except the kitchen staff) was happy!
After the three talks by Yamuna, Yogesvara Prabhu spoke by Skype. He described the adventures of publishing Yamuna’s famous cookbook, “Lord Krishna’s Cuisine.” Despite all odds and against most conventions, this amazing cookbook won the award for 1986 best Asian cookbook of the year. To top that, later that same year, “Lord Krishna’s Cuisine” received first prize from the panel of the International Association of Cooking Professionals, which is the Pulitzer prize-equivalent in the cooking world. This was an unprecedented decision as they don’t usually award first prize to the same cookbook at both of these presentations.
After Yogesvara, Kausalya Prabhu spoke about how Srila Prabhupada always made sure that the women were carefully protected. He often took them in his car with him when traveling in India. And when one Indian man criticized the devotees for allowing a woman to sing Sanskrit prayers, as Yamuna did, Srila Prabhupada retorted, “You will never know one ounce of the devotion of these women in your entire lifetime!”
Syamasundara Prabhu also spoke via Skype about some of the association he had with Yamuna. Following all of this nectar through the ears, everyone was very happy to experience some nectar through the tongue. Headed by Radha Prabhu, there was a feast of preparations taken from Yamuna Devi’s cookbook as a perfect end to the celebration of this glorious Vaishnavi’s life.
The evening was very enlivening and, as Malati expressed, Yamuna devi will stay ever alive in our hearts and our minds.
