In a few hours the court case in Russia will resume with their feeble attempts to ban the greatest dialogue in history, the Bhagavad Gita. Through the media coverage millions have read about the Bhagavad Gita and worldwide the distribution of the Bhagavad Gita has taken on even greater meaning. Krishna is in control of everything and we pray to Krishna to protect the Russian yatra and the distribution of the Bhagavad Gita As-it-is.
Of course no matter what the results the collective devotee community has full faith in Krishna. His Holiness Gopal Krishna Maharaja asked that we restrain from worldwide protests. Hopefully tomorrow the results are for celebration and we can hit the street with more vigor distributing Srila Prabhupada's books. If not, we hope with the blessings of HH Bhakti Vijnana Goswami, HH Gopal Krishna Goswami and other senior leaders of ISKCON Russia we can hit the streets with hundreds of mrdangas, kartals, books and voices to use this as a catalyst to spread the timeless message of the Bhagavad-Gita on behalf of Srila Prabhupada and fulfill our duty in Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's sankitan movement...
[The title of the article chosen by TOI created some wishful thinking for a moment but the contents are more reflective of the current status. Of course, there are now hundreds upon hundreds of articles about this case and thus we are selectively posting only a few since the devotee community at large is well aware of the case...]
Moscow courts had dismissed Gita cases Mona Mehta, TNN | Dec 28, 2011
Tomorrow at 12:30 hours IST, Tomsk court, Russia, is due to pass its verdict on banning the Bhagavad Gita. An "anti-cult" group affiliated to the Russian Orthodox Church, has called for a ban on the Gita terming it an 'extremist' text. And the verdict can have far reaching repercussions - either way.
An expert panel was constituted to examine if the text incites religious hatred and humiliation.
"Banning the Gita as an extremist piece of literature would mean banning the Russian chapter of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness - one of the biggest Hindu organizations in Russia with a following of around 40,000, of which nearly 1,000 people visit the temple in Moscow every day," said Swami Bhakti Vigyan (nee Vadim Touneev), scientist by training and head of ISKCON, Russia, currently in Delhi.
This is not the first time that the Bhagavad Gita has been involved in a court case. "There were two others in a Moscow court, but Moscow being more cosmopolitan, these cases were dismissed. This one time, they have gone ahead and pressed charges and it has come to court for hearing in Tomsk," said Swami Bhakti Vigyan.
So what is so objectionable about the Bhagavad Gita - the text or commentary by Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada? "Contrary to what the Russian government's spokesperson has to say, what the court is objecting to is not Prabhupada's commentary but the Bhagavad Gita itself," Swami says, who helped translate the text into Russian. "I have been involved with the translation of the Gita, especially its third edition, released in 2007. All I did was to make a few stylistic changes. The rest of the book remains the same as it was in 1984 when the Gita was first distributed in Russia. We have given out more than 10 million copies since," he adds.
A majority of the Russian population, 70 percent, would align themselves with the Russian Orthodox Christian Church, the religion prevalent in Russia before the Soviet rule, say experts, while 10 percent follow Islam. The rest are mostly atheists. "I do agree that there is a difference in the Christian and ISKCON conception of God, I understand the court has a problem with terms such as 'demons' for asuras and 'fools' for mudhas but Russians are philosophical by nature, with a high level of receptivity. They seek answers to what is the meaning of life after death and why we are born. Many Christians have told me that their understanding of the Biblehas become deeper after reading the Gita," said Swami Vigyan. "The contention is that we differ at a theological level, but a normal court is not the place to debate these differences. The core teachings of both Christianity and ISKCON are the same - love thy neighbour, love God," he added.
1968 December 28: "Such practices are against the principles of Krishna Consciousness. I want that all my students should always be ideal in character and not discredit our Society. For Krishna we can execute any activity, but this is not free license to act whimsically."
1970 December 28: "In India everyone is a devotee. They have simply been mislead by politicians. By Lord Caitanya's mercy we are again reviving their dormant Krishna Consciousness, just as we are doing in our centers all over the world."
1971 December 28: "I wanted we should print such leaflets, but they have not done - simply trying for equaling Dai Nippon, consuming money like Dai Nippon, and producing nothing. Our Society means books, if there are no books, how can we preach?"
1971 December 28: "We have been there for so many years, only now you are printing the first book? Produce profuse books, spend all your time translating, organizing, printing and distributing, then you will be able to improve the situation."
1971 December 28: "Wherever there is preaching strength there is success, pandal, making members, traveling Sankirtana, whatever it may be - just maintain our strong position of purity and preach and distribute literature, that's all."
1972 December 28: "If you want to make progress in kicking out maya from your life, then help me to push on this Krishna Consciousness movement all over the world. You have got now the golden opportunity and it is no accident that you have got now your Spiritual Master. Now the rest is up to you."
1974 December 28: "I am always praying to Krsna that my disciples will not fall away from the path of Krsna Consciousness. Always pray to Krsna so that He may keep you engaged in His transcendental service. Avoid the service of Maya like poison."
1974 December 28: "Simply with mrdanga and karatala, traveling and chanting Hare Krsna, preaching simply Srimad Bhagavatam philosophy, this is the process. Don't add anything. It will only be a distraction."

In my first offering in praise of and to Yamuna devi I focused a little on her chanting.
Another devotional art she was famous for (among many) was cooking. It was in 1976 that I finally got to meet Yamuna-ji in person. By that time she had started a small asrama in Oregon with her close friend Dina Tarine dasi. At the beginning of the year she had written to Srila Prabhupada to seek his blessings for their project. They had installed beautiful Deities of Sri Sri Radha Vanabhari
and she outlined their plans for preaching in typical ISKCON style. But Srila Prabhupada’s initial reaction was a little negative, at least to his secretary Tamal Krishna Goswami and her local GBC, Jayatirtha. To Yamuna however, he offered encouragement while instructing her to keep her program simple and concentrate on chanting and Deity worship rather than what he called a “grotesque” program. Yamuna had of course been one of the first devotees, along with Silavati dasi, to be personally trained by Srila Prabhupada in the art of Deity worship. She was the first pujari of the first large set of Deities in ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Londonisvara [Who, Srila Prabhupada personally told me on several occasions were his favorites]. [TD1] January 10, 1976 – Bombay During the massage Tamal Krishna Goswami went over the day’s mail. He read out a letter from Yamuna dasi. She and Dinatarini dasi have a small farm in Oregon. On Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati’s disappearance day Jayatirtha installed Deities of Sri Sri Radha-Vanabihari there. They are hoping to start an asrama for senior women, and they requested financial assistance from the BBT to buy a place. Their idea is to have about twelve women and gradually begin a preaching program. Yamuna, however, did express some apprehension, admitting, “Generally women are mad after sense gratification, to dip and gossip, so thus we feel to proceed with careful attention.” In a separate letter Jayatirtha also inquired whether a BBT loan could be given for the ladies’ project. He said the property they are looking at costs $100,000, requiring a down payment of $25,000. He wanted to know what priority Prabhupada gives to this kind of project, suggesting that he might help oversee managerial and financial matters. He also suggested that Yamuna and other asrama members could earn some income and help support themselves by sewing Deity clothes for the sannyasis’ traveling parties. Prabhupada’s personal opinion is that women should not live independently. “Why don’t they go to L.A.?” he asked Tamal Krishna. Nevertheless, since they are eager to begin the project, he encouraged them. “You can attract the fair sex community. Most of them are frustrated being without any home or husband. If you can organize all these girls they will get transcendental engagement and may not be allured to the frustration of life. Your engagement should be chanting and worship of the Deity.” He also tactfully laid down strict guidelines for the ladies to follow, stressing that as single women they should live very humbly and not “dress nicely to attract men” nor attempt to start any large program. “In bhakti there is no grotesque program. A humble program is better. We are doing all these grotesque programs to allure the masses. My Guru Maharaja used to say that no one hears from a person coming from a humble, simple life. You remain always very humble.” To Jayatirtha prabhu, however, he spoke more candidly, describing their desire to be independent as a “defect.” He further elaborated on this by saying that according to Vedic culture a woman cannot live independently. He decided that if they wanted this badly enough, he would allow it. But they must function managerially and financially independent of ISKCON, although he conceded that Jayatirtha could check on them now and then to see if they were chanting and following the rules of the Society. He also made it clear there could be no connection whatsoever with sannyasis.” He gave further instructions in reply to another letter on February 21 1976 which, in retrospect, became a template for Yamuna’s devotional practice:
Another letter arrived from Yamuna dasi, indicating that she would like to develop a cow-protection program. The impression given was that they wanted to run their women’s asrama along the lines of a big temple. Prabhupada said in his reply that it is too difficult for women to engage in large-scale cow protection. He recommended that they keep the program small and manageable, with just a few cows for offering milk and sweets to the Deities. He explained that expansion means they will have to take help from men. Therefore he reiterated instructions he had given them previously, “Simply keep yourself aloof from men — chanting, many more times as possible, read books, worship the Deity…. A widow is forbidden to use ornaments, nice sari, decoration, combing the hair nicely. These are forbidden for a woman who is not with husband.” Srila Prabhupada’s high regard for Yamuna came out later in the year as he began his world tour. Beginning from Melbourne Australia and commencing to Auckland New Zealand and then Fiji, His Divine Grace then camped in Honolulu for the whole month of May. Yamuna wrote to him there in mid-month: [TD2] May 16 1976 – Honolulu Yamuna and Dinatarini dasis sent some beautiful photos of their Deities, Sri Sri Radha-Vanabehari, taken at their Gaura-purnima and Chandana-yatra festivals. Their letter enthusiastically expressed their satisfaction in living according to Srila Prabhupada’s recent instructions to them. “We have taken your instructions very seriously and live in such a way as to have virtually no association with men, living a pure simple life in the full fire of Krsna Consciousness. We think this is most beneficial and are factually tasting the results of this simple life. You know what is the proper engagement for each individual by dint of your complete purity. This is your special mercy.” They also mentioned their desire to come and see Prabhupada when he visits Los Angeles, but their inability to do so, due to lack of funds. Prabhupada thanked them for the photos of the Deities, which he said appeared nicely cared for. As for their coming to see him, Prabhupada was more than happy at the prospect. He was very glad they are taking his suggestions seriously and wants to encourage them. “I am scheduled to be in Los Angeles from June 1 to June 11. I am even contemplating coming to see you there on your farm if you are unable to come to see me. Please continue to develop things there for women devotees as previously instructed.” As it happened Yamuna was able to come to Los Angeles and with Palika dasi, cook for Srila Prabhupada during his ten day stay. Srila Prabhupada was exceedingly happy to receive her service and dine on first class, devotionally surcharged prasadam. I was also very happy because I was not a cook and had several times proved to be a complete failure at the art. I didn’t mind the slight inconvenience caused by the servant’s room being converted into Yamuna’s kitchen if it meant Srila Prabhupada would get excellent meals: [TD2] June 2, 1976 – Los Angeles There is no servant’s room, the old one having been converted into a temporary kitchen, to be used exclusively for the preparation of Srila Prabhupada’s prasadam. Fortunately both Yamuna dasi and Palika dasi, who both learned to cook in India and from Srila Prabhupada personally, will cater for His Divine Grace while we are here. So that is a headache I am relieved of. I sleep on the stairway landing just outside Prabhupada’s bathroom door and keep my luggage in the closet. Pusta Krsna Swami is in the building next door.” I don’t remember having much association with Yamuna during that visit because she was almost always in the kitchen, but I do remember putting in a request to the managers at the end of our stay for Yamuna to be added to Srila Prabhupada’s party as cook, at least for the duration of his seven week tour in America. Unfortunately she was not able to stay away from her asramafor that long and so Palika devi travelled with us instead. [TD2] June 11, 1976 – Los Angeles Since Prabhupada’s arrival here Yamuna and Palika prabhus have been cooking wonderful meals for him, and Srila Prabhupada has been appreciating their service very much. Both are expert and so the prasadam has been to his full satisfaction. I also found out that despite his rejection of avocado in Melbourne, he does like a yogurt and avocado whip called guacamole that they have been giving him. With Srila Prabhupada’s agreement and after conferring with Ramesvara Swami, it was decided that Palika will join our party for the rest of the American tour in order to ensure a consistently high standard of cooking for Srila Prabhupada. Visakha dasi, photographer and writer from Back to Godhead, will also accompany Prabhupada on his travels, recording his tour for an eventual article in the magazine. Hayagriva prabhu’s interview work is completed and he will remain here. As for Yamuna’s project, the new GBC for Los Angeles, Ramesvara Swami, had heard that privately Srila Prabhupada had been a little critical of the ladies starting their own project. So he approached him about it: [TD2] June 5, 1976 – Los Angeles Since Yamuna has been here, Ramesvara discussed her farm program with Srila Prabhupada. Prabhupada suggested that somebrahmacarinis could be sent to her for training. This morning Ramesvara asked if perhaps she could come down to Los Angeles instead because it would be cheaper. There was some suggestion by Tamal Krishna that devotees going there may develop a bit of a separatist mentality from ISKCON but Srila Prabhupada didn’t take it seriously. He simply said he had no objection if Ramesvara wanted to make that arrangement. But when Ramesvara told him that Yamuna objected and that her idea is to make their farm a little bigger, with more women living with them, Prabhupada told him, “I like that idea.” Ramesvara said there would be no men involved. Prabhupada approved. “Just like in Vrndavana there is bhajan-asrama, they’re only women.” “So that’s a good idea?” Ramesvara asked. “With man is dangerous for both,” Prabhupada told him. “I have given that: man is good, woman is good, when they come together — bad. Both of them bad.” On July 26 1976 Srila Prabhupada met with George Harrison in England for the last time. George came to the Manor and dined on first class prasadam as Prabhupada entertained him in his bedroom. George’s old friends Mukunda and Gurudasa were both there. Gurudasa of course had been Yamuna’s husband when they had first started ISKCON in the UK but now he was a sannyasi. When at one point George referred fondly to him, it elicited a response from Srila Prabhupada equally praising Yamuna as a renunciate: George expressed pleasure at seeing his old friends. “They are looking better and better all the time. It’s nice for me to see Gurudasa. He’s turning into a mountain!” Prabhupada smiled. Then, referring to Yamuna dasi, he said, “His wife has also [become] sannyasi, renounced. Have you seen her lately? She has cut hair and white dress, living alone in the temple. Vairagya-vidya-nija-bhakti-yoga. This bhakti-yoga means vairagya-vidya, means detachment. That is the perfection of life. If we remain attached, that is conditional. Maya has made so many things attractive so that we have to remain attached. And to come out of this attachment is called bhakti.“ The next time I saw Yamuna was in Vrndavana. She was intimately connected with the project there, and instrumental in many ways in the development of Krishna Balarama Mandir but had returned to America before the opening on Ramnavami 1975. On October 22 1976 she returned and was immediately honored by Srila Prabhupada: [TD4] Srila Prabhupada was surprised and pleased to receive Yamuna dasi today. She arrived from America just as he was taking his lunch. Normally he doesn’t receive guests while eating, but he immediately invited her to sit with him and offered her a small plate of his prasadam. After eating, they sat together in his darsana room and chatted. She showed him photos of theirasrama in Southern Oregon and their worshipable Deities, Sri Sri Radha Vanabehari. Yamuna has come to ask for Srila Prabhupada’s formal blessings and approval to write a cookbook, something he suggested to her in 1967 but which she didn’t feel competent to do until now, although she has previously written and calligraphed a book entitled Krsna Prasadam but this has not been published. She told him that she intends to remain in Vrndavana for about a week and then go to Calcutta to stay with Mr. C.L. Bajoria, one of our prominent life members. Mr. Bajoria has a first-class cook with whom Yamuna has studied, and she wants to learn more from him about Bengali cooking. She is also planning further research and interviews with Pishima, Prabhupada’s sister. Srila Prabhupada was most happy with her proposal and gave her his full encouragement. October 31 1976 –Vrndavana-dhama Yamuna has prepared Srila Prabhupada’s breakfast several times during her stay and also cooked his lunch a couple of times. Now today she left for Calcutta to take up her cooking research. Srutirupa dasi, who often helps Palika with Prabhupada’s cooking, decided that she wanted to accompany her, and since the two of them were going, Palika decided she also wanted to go. Palika currently has a bad case of weeping eczema on her hands, and this is interfering with her service to Srila Prabhupada. She took permission from Srila Prabhupada after giving assurances that Arundhati would cover her cooking duties, although Arundhati is not as experienced and expert in the art. Last night when Prabhupada called Arundhati in and asked her to prepare iddli for his breakfast, she was quite nervous about it because she hasn’t made them before. After a couple of weeks in Calcutta Yamuna returned to the west. It wasn’t until 1987 that she finally got her cook book into print. I guess that was reflective of the precision and perfection that she applied to everything she did. When it hit the stores it was a blockbuster and she won numerous awards including the International Association of Culinary Professionals ‘Cookbook of the Year.’
She became a regular columnist in several top newspapers and I remember seeing her in Los Angeles in the early nineties during a national book tour she was doing. She enthusiastically greeted me and I her, as old friends and fellow servants of Srila Prabhupada. I felt privileged that she saw me in that light. Again this is just a glimpse. I hope by it to show how dear Yamuna was to Srila Prabhupada and how she pleased him by her expertise in cooking, the very first devotional service he engaged her in when she first met him in 1966.
"I adore the primeval Lord Govinda, who burns up to their roots all fruitive activities of those who are imbued with devotion and impartially ordains for each the due enjoyment of the fruits of one's activities, of all those who walk in the path of work, in accordance with the chain of their previously performed works, no less in the case of the tiny insect that bears the name of indragopa than in that of Indra, king of the devas." (Sri Brahma Samhita 5.54) O Govinda, may Your darsana indeed burn up to their roots all of our fruitive activities and may You simultaneously imbue us with devotion to Your lotus feet.
Kadamba Kanana Swami, Mayapur, November 2011) Lecture – Caitanya-caritamrta Part 4
It was Caitanya Mahaprabhu who did not write any books, but He left these eight verses. These eight verses are called the Śikṣāṣṭakam, and He never recited them like we are doing them in the morning. It’s not that Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu gave all these eight verses in one breath, and here is the Śikṣāṣṭakam like a poem with eight stanzas, and there it is. No, these verses were sporadically spoken…. each one was separate. It was Rupa Goswami who for the first time assembled them in the Padyavali, but not together since they are scattered within the book, with one here and another one there. It was Krishandas Kaviraja Goswami, who for the first time put these eight verses together and allows Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu to explain the verses, which is in the last chapter of the Caitanya-caritamrta.

Some few days back, I read a newspaper article on Higgs Boson. Higgs Boson is considered to be the missing puzzle in the jigsaw puzzle of the Big bang theory. Million and billions are spent on discovering the same, and many scientists have discovered this and proving that the Big bang theory is a fact and a mission of their life. Having read about this and related article, I have just compiled a poem. Hope it is in line with regulations of the blog. Here it goes. My name is Mrs Sudha Mehta, and I live in Bosnia with my 8 year old daughter.
Physicists hunt for Higgs Boson To prove that universe was created with smashing of photon They say smashing and bang happened for no reason And matter turned into mass and spirit without reason Life cannot spring out of matter Even a child knows this better Can inanimate particles collide and make life? How silly to spends billions behind this obstinate rife Just accept with humility that the creator has a purpose for creating one and all How can the universe run systematically without control? He is the controller and we are his tool Let’s try to understand his hidden message and not be a fool As man tries desperately to load over the nature His illusion deepens and he is lost forever Higgs boson is sending all on wild goose chase Oh Krsna! How to save this human race
All glories to Srila Prabhupada's ISKCON Toronto Sankirtan Team for crossing the target of 35,000 books for 2011 and 10,000 books for Prabhupada Marathon. With the mercy of Srila Prabhupada, a young, enthusiastic and dedicated team of young devotees have poured countless hours into sankirtan to spread Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's message throughout the city. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and so many of his disciples who made the way and many who continue to provide directions and inspiration. All glories to Srila Prabhupada's sankirtan warriors!

From Krishna Kirti Dasa Humanistic Psychology’s blurring of the distinction between the self and material nature implies that the potential for growth and development lies mainly within the self. Krsna Consciousness, however, considers that the potential for growth and self development is extrinsic and resides with Krishna and appointed agents like the guru. Humanistic Psychology aims at emancipating the self by unlocking the self’s inner potential, whereas Krsna Consciousness aims at emancipating the self by obtaining the mercy of Krishna and His devotees.
(this blog is recorded on the full page: quick time player needed) Although conventional Christian wisdom teaches us that “the road to hell is paved with good intentions,” this slogan has only relative value to try to motivate us to make sure we are on the right path. This idea, as far as I can tell, grew out of the concept that one has only one life to obtain salvation, and if one gets it wrong, then eternal suffering in hell will be the consequence. I have often been told by well-meaning preachers that while I might be sincere, I could be sincerely wrong! Fortunately for all souls, God is infinitely more merciful than to give us only one lifetime to walk the path of ultimate righteousness. How many chances do you give your baby to walk? read more

Himself he believed it but arjuna ask on behalf of others who may have doubts arjuna uvaca-aparam bhavato janma- param janma vivasvatah -katham etad vijaniyam tvam adau proktavan iti, that surya deva vivasvan was born so many ages before you krishna how could i believe that you gave this knowledge of gita to king vivasvan than the lord replied [sri bhagvan uvaca bahuni me vyatitani- janmani -tavaca arjuna- tani aham veda sarvani na tvam vettha parantapa], so many births you took and I also took, but I remember all of my birth days but you dont remember anyone of them, than again krishna is explaining explicitly to arjuna how really he comes in this world of duality. Now krishna who is govinda is explaining to arjuna, [Ajo 'pi sann avyayatma- bhutanam isvaro 'pi san prakrtim svam adhisthaya- sambhavamy atma mayaya] krishna said I am unborn the meaning of [avyaya] is which never destroys, so which does not destroy that kind of body I have and I am unborn – than he said bhutanam isvaro pi san those people who are born in this jagat I am their isvara than he said prakrtim svam adhisthaya – my this spiritual body is sambhavamy atma mayaya I appear through my atma mayaya potency we come in this world due to our karma and sri krishna appears by his yoga maya potency and sri krsnas body is spiritual his body is not like ours, while present on battle field his age to this worldly calculation was 125years but still he was nava-yovanam [advaitam acyutam anadim ananta rupam adyan puran purusam nav yauvanam ca] brahma tells that being the oldest person he still is a youth, when the idea comes that krsna took birth its not a ordinary birth from some mothers womb, that’s called avirbhava or prakat or appearance he is there somewhere he just appears due to the call of his pure devotee, and we come in this world we take birth from our mothers womb and we assume a new body, material body, but krishna appears with his spiritual body and sometimes people argue due to their doubts that when the lord comes he assumes different forms like lord rama, sometimes lord nrsimha, sometimes krsna, sometimes Balarama, sometimes vamana incarnation they think that when lord incarnates he assumes those forms and than those forms never exists but vedas does not accept this fact whatever forms he assumes all are spiritual and eternal forms and eternally exists in the spiritual world whichever forms he need to utilize to perform his lila he comes in those forms those forms are already there in the spiritual kingdom. But still inside krsnas form all other forms do exists all the incarnation is coming from krsnas original form, that’s why his form is eternal and spiritual and krsna demonstrated all these activities through performing his various pastimes in this mortal world ,we got many scriptures one of them is visnu purana; in visnu purana parasara muni is explaining the six opulance of god he said [BHAGA AND VAN- FOR Eg; BAL AND VAN ] So a person who posses six opulence in full is considered a only supreme personality of godhead, and that’s found only in when he perform his lila and opulence whatever opulence we conceive is only one speck its only possible to his pure devotees because it is inconceivable with our this body and senses,to perceive. SO from here i will begin to write the description of his each opulence and how he demonstrated on this universe which is a next 30 pages , thank you remain always humble servant in your service [hare krsna] Vicaru Das

Keeping projects in business for the long term has been a constant theme of the Fixes column, and if sustainability has a poster child, it would be a water pump. Travel anywhere in Africa or South Asia or Central America, and you will find a landscape dotted with the rusting skeletons of dead water pumps or wells..
In most developing countries, these water points are installed with great fanfare by the government or a charitable group. They greatly improve the lives of villagers. Having a water point in or near the village means that women don’t have to spend 6,8, even 12 hours a day on perilous journeys to fetch water from rivers or lakes. The pumps allow girls to go to school instead of staying home to help their mothers fetch water or take care of siblings. They allow villagers to drink reasonably clean water instead of risking their health with every sip.
Then something breaks on the pump — a huge catastrophe like an underground pipe bursting, or a small one, like the loss of a bolt or a washer. And it never works again.
Early death is shockingly widespread for water pumps. Perhaps the biggest study of this ever was carried out in 21 African countries by an organization called Sustainable Water Services at Scale. It found that 36 percent of pumps were not working. “This level of failure represents a waste of between $1.2 billion and $1.5 billion in investments in 20 years,” said the organization.
In Tanzania, mapping of water points showed that nationally, less than half the existing rural water points were working. Of water points that were less than two years old, a quarter had already stopped functioning.
Why, when communities benefit so obviously from water, do so many water points fall out of use? The short answer is that keeping the pumps running usually falls to the community or local government. But it requires specialized skills, spare parts, tools and funds. None of these are found in rural villages.
One group taking a hard look at how to solve the problem is the British-based charity WaterAid. When the organization analyzed why water points failed in Tanzania, it found something interesting: the most sustainable were those maintained by private contractors. This is not a ready-made solution; it won’t work everywhere — really poor areas won’t be able to pay. And in some regions, problems like price gouging were associated with private operators. But WaterAid felt it might be able to solve these problems. So in the north of India, it came up with an ingenious way to do just that.
Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state in India — it is also one of the poorest and most drought-prone. The government has been aggressively installing new water pumps, but they quickly fall into disuse. In the Mahoba district, south of the state capital of Lucknow, there are about 12,500 community water pumps, said. K.J. Rajeev, WaterAid’s general manager for the northern region of India. “But 40 percent of them are usually down, especially in summer,” he said. And when they break, they stay broken — three-quarters of the repairs take at least a month, and many are never repaired at all. Now things are different in Mahoba. In May, Lisa Millman, WaterAid America’s director of development and communications, was visiting a town called Charkhari. She was sitting in a small storefront office, a shop lined with shelves of hand pump parts, when a cellphone rang. The call was from the village of Kotedar, where the main hand pump had broken. A master mechanic took the call and asked some questions. This was apparently going to be a big job — five mechanics piled onto two motorbikes, along with the 10-year-old son of one of the men. They reached the village 20 minutes later. As a throng of villagers watched, they took out huge wrenches. They disassembled the pump and began pulling up heavy segments of pipe. At the tenth segment they found a hole and patched it. Two and a half hours after they arrived, the pump was reassembled and working. They got on their bikes and rode off into the sunset.
Millman, who had followed in a car, had asked the 10-year-old if he wanted to be a mechanic like his dad. “He was smirking and laughing,” she said. “But after he watched his dad repair the pump, he was in awe.”
WaterAid and its local partners have set up four workshops, called Community Participation Centers, in the Mahoba district, and the project is now expanding into the neighboring state of Bihar. A call to the workshop reaches a master mechanic. He or she can choose the appropriate mechanics in the group, depending on location and skills, to send to address the problem. Each is is equipped with a cellphone, tool kit and a bike, moped or motorbike. Including mechanics-in-training and several who work part time, the centers have 27 female mechanics.
Many of the women were landless agricultural laborers before they learned hand pump repair, and many were members of the Dalit, or Untouchable, caste — the most downtrodden in Indian society. In a very traditional region, where women cover their faces and do not speak in public, it was at first hard to find women who wanted the job. Even some who completed the training didn’t want to go out to villages and work in public, said Rajeev. Now, however, wherever they go, village men accept them and women embrace them. Seeing a mechanic in yellow hardhat and sari has opened up the spectrum of possibilities for village women.
In 14 months of work, the center mechanics have repaired more than 1,100 pumps in Mahoba. Ninety-three percent of the repairs were made within 24 hours of the phone call, and only 3 percent took more than two days. A simple repair costs a village 100 rupees — roughly $2.00 — with more complex repairs costing up to $6. Water quality testing costs $1.20. The mechanics guarantee all work.
Rajeev said that the four Mahoba workshops cost WaterAid about $40,000 to set up — to train mechanics, buy parts and tools, provide bikes and cellphones and visit village councils to promote the new service. But now WaterAid is tapering off financial support to the workshops, which are all operating sustainably and on the verge of meeting their profitability goals. “We will be providing only technical assistance and hand-holding,” he said. To keep the workshops running, the mechanic keeps 70 to 90 percent of the repair fee and deposits the rest in the workshop’s account. This isn’t the first time WaterAid tried to train mechanics in the area. In 2004, its local partner recruited men and women and trained them to do preventive maintenance and minor repairs in their own villages. It didn’t last. The trainees learned only the most basic repairs and often had to leave work incomplete. They also earned very little money. So WaterAid then decided it needed to create a real business, using high standards of training, aggressive outreach to village governments and attractive practices like guaranteed work.
Why couldn’t the market take care of this problem? There are hand pump mechanics in Mahoba, after all. But they tend to live in major market cities. Rajeev said they demanded very high fees to go out to remote villages — often too high for villages to pay. There are also information disconnects – they do no outreach to villages, so some village councils don’t know about these mechanics or how to call them.
The market also can’t finance major repairs — most villagers are too poor. The center program can work because the government has a fund that village councils can use to pay for hand pump maintenance. The fund can take 45 days to pay — too long for most traditional mechanics. Center mechanics, however, don’t mind. (Very minor repairs can usually be paid on the spot.) And now four villages have signed maintenance contracts with center workshops, paying directly from the government’s fund.
What’s happening in Mahoba is promising. But the key to this process is that the Indian government pays the bills. In the places where this problem is most serious, government is AWOL. On Wednesday I’ll look at why it has been so difficult to keep water points running, mistakes that water groups have made and what poor villages might do to keep the water flowing.
Today marks the disappearance day of Srila Jiva Goswami. Srila Jiva Goswami was a prolific writer and he wrote 25 works in sanskrit with a total of over 400,000 sanskrit verses! He became a great preceptor of the Gaudiya Sampradaya, as blessed and predicted by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
Srila Jiva Goswami is one of the revered Six Goswamis of Vrindavan and the nephew of Srila Rupa and Sanatana Goswami. He is credited for establishing the prominent Radha Damodara temple which is so dear to Srila Prabhupada and his followers. Srila Jiva Goswami personally managed this temple as well as Govindaji, Madana Mohana and Gopinatha temples and also assisted Raghunatha Dasa Goswami in the excavation of Radha Kunda.
In 1573 the Moghul Emperor, Akbar came to see the Goswamis of Vrindavan and after meeting Srila Jiva Goswami he became enthralled with them.
Our Srila Prabhupada stated, "The Vaishnavas are by far the greatest philosophers in the world, and the greatest among them was Srila Jiva Goswami".
Srila Jiva Goswami's glories go on and on and I have simply provide the above summary.
However, we have also cut and paste some more information below.
How fortunate we are to be part of this parampara! Jaya Srila Jiva Goswami! Srila Jiva Goswami Prabhu (1511-1596) was the nephew of Srila Rupa Goswami, the son of his brother Sri Vallabha (Anupama). In his infancy he had the great fortune of seeing Sri Caitanya and Mahaprabhu placed His lotus feet upon the child's head exclaiming that the boy would grow up to be a great preceptor in the Gaudiya sampradaya. In his studies the young Jiva excelled in all subjects, especially Sanskrit grammar, poetry and rhetoric.
When he learned that his two uncles had taken to the path of renunciation and that his father had passed away, Sri Jiva journeyed to Navadvipa in order to get the mercy of Lord Nityananda. When he arrived in Navadvipa Lord Nityanananda introduced Jiva to all the associates of Mahaprabhu including Saci-devi and Srivasa Thakura and proceeded to take him on parikrama of Navadvipa-dhama. On the order of Nityananda, Sri Jiva went on to Varanasi to study Vedanta from Madhusudana Vacaspati, a disciple of Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya who had heard from his guru the divine explanations of Srimad Bhagavatamthat he had received from Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Jiva mastered the same conclusions and then set out for Vrndavana to join his uncles Sri Rupa and Sri Sanatana.
Sri Jiva took diksa from Srila Rupa Goswami and remained under his shelter and guidance until Rupa Goswami entered into samadhi in 1564. Srila Jiva Goswami was proclaimed as the leader of the Gaudiya Vaisnavas. He established the 'Visva Vaisnava Rajya Sabha' and taught Sanskrit and Gaudiya Vaisnava philosophy to eminent devotees such as Srila Narottama Dasa Thakura, Srila Syamananda Pandita and Srila Srinivasa Acarya. By his vast erudition, he attracted scholars throughout India to study in Vraja. Thus, Vrndavana became the headquarters of the Gaudiya Vaisnava sampradya.
Some of the books that he has written are the Sat-sandarbhas, Harinamarta-vyakharana, Sri Madhava-mahotsava, Brahma-samhita Tika, Goplala-campu, Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu Tika, Ujjvala-nilamani Tika, Laghu-vaisnava Tosani, Srimad Bhagavata Tika, Sarva-samvadina Tika, Gopala-tapani Tika, Gayatri-vyakhya Vivrtti, Padma Puranastha-yogasara-stotra Tika, Radha-Krsna Arcana-candrika, Dhatu-samgraha, Govinda-virudhavali, Sankalpa-kalpadhruma, Bhavarthasucaka-campu and Sri Radha-Krsna karapada.
The following is a short review on "The Hidden Glory of India" a fantastic book being published by the BBT with rich photographs and covering many aspects of Gaudiya Vaishnava philosophy in an engaging fashion especially for youth who have limited exposure and attention. Vaishnavism handbook Arun ganapathy Dec 26, 2011, 01.30PM IST
It should be pointed out that the word Hindu is not found in any of the classical writings of India. Nor can it be traced to the classical Indian languages, such as Sanskrit or Tamil.
In fact, the word 'Hinduism' has absolutely no origins within India itself. Still, it persists, and traditions as diverse as Shaivism and Jainism, Shaktism and Vaishnavism have been described as Hinduism. This may work as a matter of convenience, but ultimately it is inaccurate.
When a book starts on a note like that, it makes you sit up and take note of what follows. And what follows, under the title of The Hidden Glory of India, is actually a handbook of Vaishnavism. Vaishnavism had its roots in the South, 'indeed the earliest evidence...is found in the South,' says author Steven J Rosen, '... then it moved North'. Formal systematisation of northern Vaishnava thought was eventually affected by several prominent teachers, most notably by Vallabha Shri Chaitanya and the six Goswamis of Vrindavan.
These teachers expressed their devotion to God, through bhakti. Their notions of godhead were not very different to the Vedantins. There was Brahmn, 'the lord's impersonal feature', and there was a Paramatma, 'a localised aspect' of the all-pervading God. There was Bhagawan, 'His supreme personhood', and of course there was Krishna who is 'the Supreme Lord, the embodiment of truth, consciousness and joy'. All this information forms the early chapters; and it would just pass as "I've-read-all-this-before", were not the author throwing up surprises. For example, in the chapter on Krishna, Rosen says it is Krishna who manifests Himself as Vishnu - and not the other way around as is popularly believed.
While this might unsettle established notions, others' explanations clarify. In the chapter on Hanuman, Rosen clarifies the use of the word vanara. "Vyasa describes him (Hanuman) by using the word vanara originally meaning 'proper to the forest' or 'forest animal', although it soon came to refer specifically to monkeys."
Rosen's book is attractively printed, and illustrated with superb prints of paintings. You will particularly like the image of Chaitanya dancing with his followers. That image, in the middle, marks a turn in the book; from the gods and philosophy to the more earthy aspects: incarnations, sacred places, dance, music, practitioners, festivals and vegetarianism. Much of this information is dry fact, but there are parts which are engaging. For instance, I didn't know that the sacred marks of Vishnu - the U-shaped tilak - represented the footsteps of Krishna, and a bit that's controversial, perhaps even biased, too.
When Rosen writes (and quotes) that "Jesus preached a doctrine similar to that of the Bhakti movements in India...Krishna is seen as God, Jesus' father...who can say that when Jesus prays 'our Father who art in heaven...,' is it not Krishna to whom he is praying?" You wonder if Rosen isn't being carried away by his own Vaishnava background. (Rosen is a member of ISKCON.)
While it certainly raises eyebrows, it also adds colour to a book that's quite an easy-to-read introduction to Vaishnavism.

If you attended the Panihati Auction yesterday without doubt you will have relished the jubilant festival mood and the lovingly-prepared prasada:
'In Panihati Nityananda Prabhu looked effulgent, surrounded by hundreds of dedicated devotees. Raghunath Das, approaching these great souls, was embarrassed, for in his humility he felt guilty about acting like an ordinary materialist. Nityananda Prabhu decided to lovingly joke with him. And so the following words emanated from Nityananda Prabhu's lips: “You are a thief, Raghunath Das! Come here, and I will now punish you. Prepare a big festival and feed all of the devotees with yogurt and chipped rice.” Hearing this, Raghunath Das was greatly pleased. Finally able to use his wealth in the service of the Lord, he immediately sent some of his servants to purchase the necessary ingredients.
Soon, the area was inundated by vast quantities of chipped rice, yogurt, milk, pastries, sugar, bananas, and assorted savories. Just to take part in the jubilant festivities, priests, laymen, and other pilgrims came from miles around.' (Satyaraja dasa, The Six Goswamis of Vrindavan 1)

Sankarshan Das Adhikari Lord Gopinath Can Attract the Entire Universe http://www.backtohome.com/images/Krishna/Gopinatha.JPG Answers by Citing the Vedic Version: Question: What Happens in the Spiritual World? My beloved master, Hare Krishna! My question today is: Does the Lord enact the same pastimes in the other Vaikuntha planets as He does in Goloka Vrindavan, where the devotees are not aware of His Lordship? Yours Devotedly, Avinash G. Answer: Krishnaloka Pastimes Are Different In the spiritual world, which is known as Vaikuntha (a place with no anxiety), there are innumerable planets. On each planet the Supreme Lord is present in one of His unlimited forms. On all these planets the Supreme Lord is worshipped with great awe and reverence as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. However on the topmost of all these planets, known as Goloka Vrindavan or Krishnaloka, the Supreme Lord for His own transcendental pleasure plays the role of an ordinary village boy and hides His identity as the Supreme Lord. Thus on this planet His activities are completely different from those displayed on the other planets of the Vaikuntha world.
