Recently I took a trip to Vietnam to research and purchase marble for the temple construction. This photo essay is an inside view of the cutting and packing that is done in order to have them sent to us in India.
The Festival Committee has released an update of February's Festival of the Chariots schedule.
The Ratha Parade will run from 12:30-2pm. We will pull the Lord's cart from the corner of Beaconsfield Parade and Fitzroy St (near the Vedic Village site) along Jacka Boulevard to Luna Park and return.
To honor the request of my local Physical Fitness Expert (wife) that I make some effort to stave off decrepitude, I’ve begun doing pushups and squats in the morning, in addition to walking on the beach. I’ve been getting “body tired” like I haven’t been in years, which is fine. I’m not complaining.
Some of my happiest years were when I ran cross-country — probably something to do with the proliferation of serotonin uptake inhibitors in my teenage bloodstream. Physical activity is a major tonic for the mind, which I believe cramps up into a twisted, stiff knot without it. And my mind, when it cramps up, which is like every few seconds, has major tendencies toward negativism.
It manufactures stuff like, “Why take up any course of self improvement when war could break out at any moment? The dollar could be totally devalued and we’ll be in a financial crisis with wheelbarrows full of useless currency notes like Germany in the early 20th century. The oil will run out and we’ll all be scrambling looking for food because the grocery stores will close and you won’t be able to use money anyway because it will have no value. Nobody knows how to grow food or even hunt. The modern industrial economy is a horrifyingly failed experiment which is driving all those who participate in it towards extinction,” and on and on and on. Time to go for a walk.
Have you seen the BBC’s Wild China video series? It shows people living in Tibet and other out-of-the-way places in China under all kinds of (to my mind) terrifyingly austere crazy tundra situations. These people know what to do when it comes to practical living. There’s one shot of an eighty-year-old lady smoking a clay pipe while zooming across a ravine on a zip line with a pig tied to her waist on her way to market.
Another scene shows some rural fishermen with trained cormorants. They paddle their bamboo pontoon boats to the middle of a pond, loop threads around their pet cormorants’ throats so they won’t swallow fish, and send the cormorants diving. They catch fish in their beaks and bring them back to the fishermen, who say, “thank you very much,” in Chinese and put the fish in a bucket. The cormorants keep diving back down to nab more fishy fish, until finally the nooses come off and the cormorants get fed. And this tradition has been passed down since practically forever.
That’s pretty cool, I think. So, how am I supposed to live? What kind of wisdom will I be able to pass down that might be of practical use to hyper-mental worrywarts of the future?
“Let me offer my respectful obeisances unto the tulasi tree, which can immediately vanquish volumes of sinful activities. Simply by seeing or touching this tree one can become relieved from all distresses and diseases..."
(Nectar of Devotion, Chp 11)
O Srimati Tulasi Devi, please relieve our distresses and diseases; please grant us the darsana of the exalted residents of your sacred land.
The eternity of the soul The need to connect, the need for love, the need to be cared and to care The need to have a beep and meaning relationship with another living entirety.
Over the past month I’ve had for me some unusual conversations surrounding relationships, the effort taken in relationships and the beep emotional heartbreak when the sad event of a break up occurs.
In reality we all want the perfect relationship, and for each this is different. The ultimate relationship is that with Krishna in what ever guise that takes, it is our momentary thought of enjoying without Krishna that has lead to the ultimate heartbreak, life away from Krishna and our mixing with material nature.
Within this age of Kali were quarrel prevails relationships are proving for many problematic moving from one failed relationship to another ever searching ever hoping that this one, this individual will become that special one, that life partner.
For as the soul is eternal our concepts are in themselves holding onto an eternal concept.
Affairs – the thought of something new and exotic a new thrill Financial- looking for security a nice home full of desirable goods
A constant need to better oneself.
Pondering seeing the heartache of each person I’ve listened too, there hopes and desires dashed it is hard to come up with the right words, or the correct words; after all a single man in his 40′s who has had the sum of one relationship and is contented in his own company is not the best person to come to for relationship advice.
And having been asked to do some work with community groups on relationships I am left scratching my head, for head knowledge is easy practical application well is another thing.
But sadly we see how values are changing, the once fixed gender roles are no longer there and we are encouraged to go out and try, check the goods before purchasing , don’t readily commit, go out and enjoy life do and be what you want.
In it all we are not told about the destructive side, relationships are seen in the view of sex life without an emotional context – nor that a deeper relationship can be had with the absence of sex.
And our consumer eccentric lifestyle, chasing after the latest thing teaches us not the value of what we have but that we should aspire to have better. Constant changing a constant dissatisfaction with what we have.
We then reflect this in our personal relationships, unsatisfied and seeing newer and better things we just move on, little appreciating what we have in front of us; even more so are we willing to put effort in.
Simply relationships have to be constantly worked on, a constant adjustment as times and circumstances change; putting the needs of an individual before our own in a society that teaches me first, my needs and wants an if they are not being met simply move on.
It is always sad to hear of relationships that have failed and the heartbreak it brings, and get we continue to search, hope that somewhere tat special on is going to fulfill our desire and happiness that lasts a life time will come.
However in this age even if we find that special one and all our basic desires are fulfilled still dissatisfaction.
And this we take into our spiritual search, a desire to get closer to Krishna but on our terms, as long as our desire is fulfilled unable to adjust or compromise. And even when we have our basic spiritual needs met still we are dissatisfied.
For we are unable to settle with simple living high thinking, or a life of serving the needs of others (for a true relationship is based on our desire to serve another living entity)
And thus we become bewildered, emotionally battered and resentful
I must say I enjoy the stimulation of a magical mystery tour of the refrigerator, freezer, the garden and the pantry tospontaneously decide on what to cook for dinner. My hungry 14-year old son Nitai and my modestly hungry 87-year old father would also be the recipients of whatever it was I was going to prepare, if only I knew myself.
A quick perusal of the cupboard led to me decide to use the last remaining dozen small potatoes, since they were starting to show signs of imminent sprouting. A quick glance at the 3 sheets of frozen butter-puff pastry in the freezer, and it was decided. I'll bake some flakey stuffed vegie pastries.
I diced and boiled the potatoes with water and a little salt, picked and chopped some Red Chard spinach from my garden, threw that into the pot when the potatoes were almost done along with some peas, then drained the lot in a colander.
Next I heated a pan with a little olive oil, sprinkled in some asafetida, cracked peppercorns, added the potato, pea and chard mixture, threw in a generous handful of freshly picked parsley, a bit more salt, a grating of nutmeg (wonderful with spinach!) some marinated feta, a big squeeze of lemon juice, some animal-rennet-free bitey pecorino cheese, and the filling for the pastries was done.
Time to decide on a salad : some leftover steamed Thai rice from yesterday, along with a whole lot of fresh garden herbs -mint, coriander, parsley, marjoram, Vietnamese mint, some sliced salad greens, thin slivers of red cabbage, my first three baby snow peas of the season (sliced raw) a peeled and diced tomato, and a dressing of homemade mayonnaise, tahini, lemon, a splash of Chinese sesame oil, and a sploosh of olive oil.
I unwrapped the puff pastry, and when it was just thawed enough to cut, I divided each of the 3 sheets into 4 squares. I had divided the filling into 12, and each of these little cups of filling was neatly placed in the centre of each square of pastry.
When the pastry was just thawed enough, I folded the squares in half diagonally and with the addition of nice decoratively-sealed edges, I popped the pastries on baking-paper-lined pizza trays and slid them into a pre-heated 180 C oven.
Golden brown and baked, I allowed them to cool, then it was time to serve, along with the salad and an accompaniment of homemade tomato chutney (my son chose ketchup).
Call them what you will - vegetable turnovers, boureki, samosa, empanadas, pasties - whatever the name, they tasted as good as they looked.

I met a young boy in University of Toronto last week and I showed him the chant and be happy. He responded saying he already had a book from me and was reading it. To my surprise he said he carried it everywhere and opened his bag to show me his copy. sankirtan yagya ke jaya!
Walking is fun in and of itself. You can add frill to it and it becomes even more interesting. Through an opening of a fence at the end of St. Catherine's Street we did go. This led to a trail and then a railroad track. We were sure we weren't supposed to be there but we reasoned that others do it otherwise there wouldn't be a worn out path. For some locals it's a dump site. Tires and some smaller household appliances are strewn about. This little 'escape route' as it appears with trees and grass, path and tracks is the kind of place where youths go to smoke their dope.
It's Montreal's east-end. Not the greatest neigbourhood, but there's a feeling of freedom where we were.
Sonny was with me on a second stroll for the day on St. Catherine's. He decided to leave his computer job of eight years for a year of pilgrimage which includes travelling with our Halifax monks. Good for him. He'll have an awesome time.
To also accompany us were Krtamala from Bosnia and Yajna, who is just ready to leave for BC to see his family there. All four of us are somewhat the creative type of people. We peered into one window at a shop that displayed some fascinating Medeival armour attire. Although it wasn't Vedic ksatriya wear, it reminded us of the battles outlined in the epic, "Mahabharat". We were taken by the work done on these costumes. Immediately I thought 'productions', 'theatre'.
To prepare for a February trip to India for a stage production that I'm working on I needed some fabric material for costumes. We decided as a group to leave that shop of our dreams for Fabricland. It was rather a spontaneous decision and certainly added to the enjoyment of the day. Within minutes we were inside the shopping mall and Fabricland. We selected many metres-length of rich flowing material which was advertized at 40% off. To get your bargain you require to have a card. Out of the four of us no one was cardholder although Yajna had one at home.
What to do? We were at the counter ready to pay.
"Is anyone looking for a card?" said the feminine voice. In the upheld hand of now a fifth person, Sharada, a godsister as we call it, who came out of nowhere, was the discount card we needed. Sharada so incidentally came to the shop overheard us and then whipped out that major card for the deal of the day. We were stunned.
Out of the day's little adventures our culmination was something we call "Krishna's arrangement." We live for that.
Please take a look. And if you have twitter or Facebook, you might pass this on to attract more folks to the site. Thanks so much.
Here are few of my projects at NV:
1) I usually offer Krsna Katha – dramatic storytelling for visitors to New Vrindavan (NV) on most Saturdays at 6 PM in the temple
2) Upon request I offer a special tour to my front lawn where Srila Prabhupada gave dharsana each night during his last visit to NV (he stayed in that house where I reside near the Palace of Gold) and speak about his four visits to NV.
3) Host student groups visiting NV
4) Speak at colleges on Krishna Consciousness and the history of the Hare Krishna Movement (will be at Denison University in Ohio later this week)
5) In Search of Story – A workshop that helps people explore their life’s journey.
6) An all day retreat at NV taking a look at the ancient Vedic stories and what they mean in our lives
7) Working on Mahabharata manuscript and will self publish it and have it available this coming summer.
In the veda Sin is defined as those activities performed in forgetfulness of our relationship with god Having an immediate or delayed outcome of self inflicted distress. Karma is basically the Sanskrit word for sin. There’s good and bad karma. But because karma pertains to the body we must have a body to receive it. Hence we have a body just to receive our karma. It’s also said that this body Is a product or result of karma and desire from previous lives thats all It is no matter what you believe actually for eg. If your body is fit and healthy that’s only becauyoung your activities of axersise and proper eating and a desire to be healthy hense your body is always a product of karma - activity
Can we escape karma? No. If we have karma pending there’s 2 ways to escape it right action in krsna consciousness (karma) and the other is to ignore the fact and just “take it as it comes” in other words do what feels good at the time and dont think about the consequences until they come and then be perplexed. But be really expert at dealing ith reverses “live in the moment” by living in ignorance/denial of the fact that were eternal and will have an after life and on a practical level by getting wasted every week end starting Wednesday. both are good ways to avoid the anxiety of sin or karma and both options will make one happy. As for myself I have chosen the krsna conscious (spiritual) path because although both options (complete ignorance or complete knowledge) make one happy, krsna happiness is better. material or sin happiness depends on conditions which are always temporary whereas happiness derived from eternal sensory activities or service to krsna is a high mellow that stays everfresh. It’s not dependent on any external condition making it eternally accessible to all anywhere. It’s simply joyful you can’t imagine it. Krishna is supremely sweet, he’s the emperor of sweetness.
In conclusion: sin or materialistic deeds will bite you back if not in this life in the next. Ignorance is bliss but you suffer alot. How to reconsile that? your so covered over that you think everything is great. there’s 2 happy people in this world: the complete fool and the complete transcendentalist. both are happy. But the quality is different. Krsna consciousness rules so you should try it for a Month. by chanting :
hare kṛṣṇa hare kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa hare hare hare rāma hare rāma rāma rāma hare hare Constantly!
“If we simply surrender unto Kṛṣṇa’s lotus feet and take this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement seriously, we can be freed from the karma incurred by sin” srila prabhupada CC madhya 25.242
sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja ahaṁ tvāṁ sarva-pāpebhyo mokṣayiṣyāmi mā śucaḥ “Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear.” (Bg. 18.66)

Today woke at 6 last night felt Ill. Then chanted the hare krsna maha mantra round my beads. Then left for castlemain to distribute srila Prabhupada transendental books. By the mercy of our spiritual master Stambha distributed 35 bhagavad gitas and 7 small books and got more than enough donations to cover the printing costs and krsna allowed me to distribute 30 bhagavad gitas and 5 copies of journey to self discovery and 14 small books and also covered the printing. Some recipients included a lady in a surf shop whos mother died this year she very much appreciated the bg and stambha bought a hat from her later and a guy in a cafe who bought it for his employees one of whom who we met later who said that everyone had a read of it and he plans on reading more later. Then we read in the car Then had dinner. Then came to bendigo where we are staying at a devotees house then tomorrow we will distribute in bendigo. I realized today when distributing nothing Is for me (except ofcourse spiritual benefits) it’s all for Krishna which means I can be detached. Muchukunda das
This is the most essential part of chanting: how attentive are you?
Imagine you are driving a car and you have a passenger sitting next to you. The passenger is continually pointing things out and trying to draw your attention to them:
“Oh, look there’s a shoe sale on! Look at those nice shoes! … Ah, look at that guy with the funny hat! … Are those your gloves on the back seat? … Look out, no, no, turn left! Oh, I thought we had to go left. … Look at the TV shop – is that your favorite football team playing? … Uh-oh, check this out: there’s a guy getting arrested over there….” If you keep getting distracted by what your passenger is saying, you’re going to crash the car.
The passenger is like your mind, and driving the car is like chanting your rounds. If you keep talking to someone and they are continuously ignoring you, eventually you are just going to shut up. That is the best way to deal with the mind: just ignore it and keep your attention on “the road”, it will eventually shut up.
The word pāragam is very significant. pāragam refers to one who can take the disciple to the other side. This side is conditioned life; the other side is the life of freedom. The spiritual master takes the disciple to the other side by opening his eyes with knowledge. We are suffering simply because of ignorance. By the instruction of the spiritual master, the darkness of ignorance is removed, and thus the disciple is enabled to go to the side of freedom.
Many people feel that meditation requires some extraordinary ability to concentrate that they don’t possess, so they don’t even try to meditate. However, the fact is that all of us have the ability required for meditation, as is evident whenever we worry. During worry, we let our thoughts take us away from our circumstances to a problem – real or imagined. And letting our thoughts take us away from our circumstances is the essential ability required for meditation. Thus, all of us have the ability to meditate; we just need to redirect that concentration from a temporary worldly situation to an eternal otherworldly reality, God, Krishna. Of course, this redirection may initially seem difficult due to the default momentum of the mind to gravitate toward worldly situations, but we can muster the determination to counter the default motion by contemplating the contrasting effects of worrying and meditating: worrying drains us internally, whereas meditating energizes us internally. Lest we feel that things will go wrong if we don’t worry about that, we can take heart from Lord Krishna’s assurance in the Bhagavad-gita (9.22) that for those who start doing chintan (meditation) on him, he takes care of all their chinta (worries).
In youth, we are mostly in a state of hurry, having so many things to do and imagining that we can bend the world to our will.
In middle age, we are mostly in a state of worry, having learnt through life’s hard lessons that so many things may go wrong and fearing that we may not be able to control them.
In old age, we are mostly in a state of feeling sorry for ourselves, lamenting all the things that we did wrong or all the things that went wrong despite our best efforts.
However, when we bring Hari (Lord Krishna) in our lives, then his wisdom frees us from:
Hurry by clarifying our priorities so that we focus on life’s most important things without trying to do everything that everyone around us feels we should be doing,
Worry by giving us the conviction that the Lord is always in control and will guide us to safety even when things appear to be going disastrously wrong.
Sorry feelings by showing us how even when material opportunities are lost irrecoverably, spiritual opportunities still remain available inalienably.
Many of us define success and failure in very narrow terms: when things work according to our plans, we consider that to be success; when things don’t work according to our plans, we consider that to be failure. When our plans don’t work, we often get frustrated and dejected, and start thinking of giving up. However, spiritual wisdom helps us broaden our definitions of success and failure. When we understand that the world is working under Krishna’s supervision, as told in the Bhagavad-gita (9.10), then we recognize that the very situation we think of as failure is an opportunity for success; when we are about to give up, we have a unique opportunity to grow up spiritually. Growing up spiritually essentially means growing in our faith that Krishna knows better than us what is best for us. If we choose not to give up, being disheartened by the doors that have shut, but choose to grow up by continuing to serve Krishna, looking for whichever door is open, we will in due course of time experience that Krishna has orchestrated things for our ultimate good in a way far better than our best plans.
Please come and partake to our annual celebration on the first day of 2012 to welcome the New Year.
The program will start at 4.30pm with a fire yajna to remove all inauspiciousness and simultaneously invoke all blessings for beginning of this new chapter in the Roman calendar.
As with every boxing day of the year, we will hold the bathing ceremony of the Sri Sri Jagannatha, Baladeva and Subhadra Mayi; They will come down from Their altar and allow us all to bathe Them, out of great compassion and mercy for the residents of Kali Yuga.
The day will conclude with the famous 'Panihati' happening where hand-painted pots filled with delicious maha-prasadam from Their Lordships will be auctioned. This year we will also have various paraphernalia from the Deities that will be put for sale.

Kонцепция Ведического руководства часть 1, проведенный Его Святейшеством Бхактивидьей Пурной Свами в 2010 году. (Russian Version)
Read full story..

Join this Conference: http://groups.google.com/group/sda_students Help Popularize Our Message By Liking Today's Thought on Facebook: Today's Thought: Same Sex Marriage: Legitimate or Illegitimate? uploaded from Bhaktivedanta Ashram--Austin, Texas USA Last Sunday night I was interviewed by a college student who asked me what is our position on same sex marriage. I explained to him that since in the Krishna consciousness movement our principle is that sex is only for procreation and not for recreation, same sex marriage does not have any legitimacy in Krishna consciousness. I told him that if a man could make his boyfriend pregnant or a lady could make her girlfriend pregnant, same sex marriage would be acceptable in Krishna consciousness. If in the Krishna consciousness movement we were to adjust our principle that recreational sex is allowable between husband and wife, then in all fairness we would then also have to legitimatize same sex marriage. In other words, if the heterosexuals are allowed to have recreational sex, why the homosexuals should not be allowed? Therefore to maintain the purity our movement we must faithfully adhere to Srila Prabhupada's principle that sex is only for procreation, not for recreation. Some will protest that this is artificial restraint. But this ignores the fact that we are not these bodies, that these bodies are only coverings of the actual self. The real satisfaction for the self is be perfectly dovetailed in a loving relationship with Supreme Self, Krishna or God. Material sense gratification will never satisfy the self and is only therefore accepted insofar as it is necessary to keep the body healthy and fit. What we should really be asking is, Is modern science compatible with the Vedic scriptures? The Vedic scriptures present perfect scientific knowledge regarding the universe, its origin, and what lies beyond this universe. While modern science is constantly changing, Vedic science remains unchanged. Knowledge which is constantly changing is not knowledge at all. It is mere speculation. Therefore the Vedic scriptures are actual science while the cosmic view of modern day science is pseudo science. Real scientific reasoning means that is must be practical. For example when you mix hydrogen and oxygen and get water, that is practical; that is science. But simply theorizing that the universe came out of absolutely nothing, as it is now being proposed by a so-called leading scientist, is not science. Where is the scientific experiment to show that something can come out of nothing? It has never been demonstrated, but yet people are foolishly accepting this dogma in the name of science, which is actually simply nescience masquerading as science. Instead of speculative hogwash, the Vedic scriptures give the scientific researcher the tools he needs to do the ultimate scientific experiment in the test tube of his own consciousness and personally experience God face to face, eye to eye. And when you know God perfectly you scientifically know everything.
