H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Sunday 4 September 2011--Be a Liberated Person from the Very Beginning--and--How to Overcome Negativity?

A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course Sunday 4 September 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. For Transcendental Association Connect With Other Members of this Course. Join this Conference: http://groups.google.com/group/sda_students Today's Thought: Be a Liberated Person from the Very Beginning Uploaded from Sofia, Bulgaria It is not difficult to become a liberated person. When we say, liberated we mean liberated from the clutches of the material nature. We are not speaking of the so called liberation of the sense gratifiers, which is nothing but bondage in disguise. Becoming such a genuinely liberated person is not at all difficult. Srila Prabhupada very nicely describes this in his purport to Bhagavad-gita 4.42: The Lord is definitely the supreme person, and His activities are transcendental. One who understands this is a liberated person from the very beginning of his study of Bhagavad-gita. So all that is required to be a liberated person, even as one begins this path of Krishna bhakti, is to understand that Krishna is definitely the supreme person and that all His activities are transcendental. If one hears submissively from a bona fide spiritual master and serves him with love, it is not at all difficult to understand these points and become a liberated person. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Answers by Citing the Vedic Version: Question: How to Overcome Negativity? I'm Lord Kishna's devotee, and I have a problem of negative thinking. My point of view is negative. No matter how many times I try to think Krishna consciously, bad thoughts ultimately come to my mind. Due to all this negativity, bad things keep coming true in my practical daily life. My chanting is also declining. Why Krishna is not helping me? Please guide me. Manisha S. Answer: Take Advantage of Key to Spiritual Success There is nothing wrong with negativity if you utilize it properly in Krishna's service. To become liberated from material bondage, requires both negativity and positivity. Negativity means to give up the association of worldly people because it is the pathway to hell. And positivity means to accept the association of devotees because it is the pathway to the spiritual world. To get rid of bad thoughts--which come in in the categories of lust, greed, anger, madness, illusion, and envy--you should constantly chant Hare Krishna and read Vedic literature as much possible. Your mind has been contaminated for thousands and millions of lifetimes. So you must now be very determined and patient as the process of Krishna consciousness gradually clears the contamination out of your mind. Whatever bad things happen to you are actually good things in disguise because through the so-called bad experiences you are burning off the reactions from your past sinful activities. So don't be disturbed by the so-called bad things. They are part of Krishna's plan to make you qualified for returning to His spiritual kingdom as soon as possible. The key to spiritual success is to remain completely sinless by strictly avoiding illicit sex, meat eating, intoxicating, and gambling as well as chanting at least 16 rounds daily of the Hare Krishna mahamantra. This will qualify you for spiritual perfection as soon as possible. "World Holy Name Week," a celebration of the spiritual practice of chanting God's names will be celebrated on six continents beginning September 2. The event is coordinated by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). It will also mark the 50th anniversary of the date that ISKCON's founder-acarya, Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada took vows of renunciation, or sanyasa, thus launching his mission to spread the chanting of God's name as a core spiritual practice around the world. Swami Prabhupada came to America by cargo ship at the age of seventy in 1965. He is honored as the first to carry the millennia-old tradition of Krishna worship–with its special emphasis on the Hare Krishna mantra, or sacred chant– outside of India.

Although the Hare Krishna mantra is rooted in the ancient Vaishnava faith, a monotheistic denomination within the broad Hindu tradition, the practice of chanting – individually and congregationally – is found in most faith traditions. Organizers of the World Holy Name Week are encouraging interfaith gatherings in which different names of God are also glorified.

"The Lord has millions of holy names and you can chant any one of them." Swami Prabhupada wrote, "Each and every name of the Lord is full of potency."

The Hare Krishna mantra, which translates as "Oh Supreme Lord, Oh Divine Energy of the Lord, please engage me in Your service," was first popularized in the west by Krishna followers singing on public streets. The mantra was also featured in the Broadway musical "Hair," and endorsed by pop culture figures such as Beatle George Harrison, who included it in his hit song "My Sweet Lord." In recent years, the mantra has gone mainstream with recording artists chanting to packed auditoriums world-wide.

World Holy Name Day will be marked in a variety of ways by the more than 400 temples and centers affiliated with ISKCON, popularly known as the Hare Krishna movement. Activities will include 24-hour chanting marathons, public festivals and chanting demonstrations, and seminars and workshops on the significance behind the chant.

Chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra goes back thousands of years. However, it gained prominence in the early 16th century, when a Bengali mystic named Chaitanya Mahaprabhu revitalized the devotional tradition by introducing an expansive spiritual movement that swept India. Central to this renaissance was Chaitanya's emphasis on the chanting of Krishna's name. Chaitanya challenged the taboos of caste-conscious orthodox Hindus by bringing the chanting into the public square, and by awarding equal access to chanting for women, outcastes, and non-Hindus. ISKCON is a vibrant continuation of the movement Chaitanya began.

Following in Chaitanya's footsteps, when Swami Prabhupada arrived in America he sat beneath a large elm tree in New York City's Tompkins Square Park and held the first outdoor chanting session outside of India. In 2001, the city of New York recognized this historic event by officially naming the elm the "Hare Krishna Tree" and erecting a plaque describing its significance.

Australian News: Thousands Stunned as Lord Krishna Manifests at the Corrimal Spring Festival

The Grand Parade will be the highlight in the morning, starting at 10am. It will proceed down the Princes Hwy from Collins St and end in Railway St. The Parade is a spectacle of colour and sound, designed to usher in the warmth and renewal that is Spring in the Suburb of Corrimal.

The sole purpose of WHNW is to celebrate the Holy Names globally and share this treasure with others.

Japa Group: The Earrings Of Radha

Hare Krsna dear devotees. Today in the Japa Room we had very nice feedback from devotees talking about their week of Japa. One devotee shared that his mind was wandering so much and he made a very good decision how to fix that - he prayed to his Deities Gaura Nitai and then he could concentrate and focus on the sound.

Another devotee said how his chanting improved by waking up early and chanting in the Brahma muhurta time.
These realisations inspire us and enthuse us to follow the same and improve our steps to get to Sudha Nama, pure chanting. Next week devotees will take notes and share with us what they have been doing to avoid inattention, offenses and chant with devotion.

Today I would like to pray to Srimate Radharani to protect us in our service and help us to advance in the path of service. May the queen of Vrindavana bless us with Her amazing qualities.
Here is a verse of the Radhastakam by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur.

The beauty of Her body is enhanced by Her twenty-five transcendental qualities, which hang as a flower garland on Her body. The ecstasy of love for Krishna is known as dhira and adhira, sober and restless. Such ecstasy constitutes the covering of Sri Radha´s body, and it is adorned by camphor. Her transcendental anger toward Krishna is embodied as Her braided and ornamented hair, and the tilak of Her great fortune shines on Her beautiful forehead. The earrings of Sri Radha are the holy names of Krishna as well as the hearing of His name and fame.
Gitavali Song 5

Wishing a wonderful week of chanting.

your servant,

Aruna devi

Krsna is not alone. Krsna is always with His friends, either gopis or the cowherd boys, or with His father, with His mother. You'll never find Krsna alone. Just like here is Krsna. Krsna is not alone. Krsna is with His Radharani and with His devotees.

Bharatavarsa.net: Book distribution seminar: A questionable character, concert mayhem and a prayer in the morning

1. You Never Know

Prabhupada Marathon 2010: One night at about 8 o'clock a sketchy-looking fellow called me over into the shadows of the Miami street side. He opened up his heart and told me about the problems he was facing in his life. He seemed slightly crazy or intoxicated. I considered ending the conversation when I thought it was going nowhere, but I decided to give him a little more time and condolence. After a few more minutes I insisted he take a book, telling him it would really help him. He gave me quite a large donation -- so large, in fact, that I was able to give him a whole set of the books I was carrying. He expressed his deep appreciation as he stumbled off.

2. Relying on Krishna

Warp Tour, Summer 2011: One concert became so loud and frenetic that no one could hear me calling out to them to stop. So I tried taking shelter of all-attractive Sri Harinama. In desperation I abandoned all "hooks" and techniques and began simply yelling "Krishna! Krishna!" at people. Lo and behold, practically every person immediately stopped, as if hit by lightning, looked me straight in the eye, and inquisitively approached me. Amazing.

3. Hidden Mystics

Late Summer 2011, San Diego: I met a mother the other day who didn't express much interest in buying any books but was eager to tell me about her spiritual journey. My meditation on book distribution these days is in the mode of triage -- I spend less time with goners and more time with those who may be saved. So by this standard I should probably have cut the conversation short, but there was something about her that convinced me to spend a few minutes speaking with her and hearing her story. She was raised a Christian but became interested in spiritual life, mainly Taoism, in her 40s. Her son, who was with her, was going through an agnostic phase. I briefly told her about my own journey to Krishna, and by the end of the conversation she decided to take a Bhagavad-gita and a Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.1! As she took her books, she explained to me how just that morning she had prayed to God to reveal Himself to her and her son in truth, beyond any religious designation. Praise the Lord!

More to come soon, hopefully.

Jaya Srila Prabhupada!

Your servant, Krishna Kumara dasa

Dear Srila Prabhupada,
Please accept my most humble obeisances on to your lotus feet again and again on this auspicious day.
Thank you for making us Krishna Conscious; making us understand the meaning of life; and showing us the path to home – back to Godhead.  Without you we would have lost our way.
You gave us Krishna Consciousness which is sweet like sugar candy.  It does not matter which way we lick it, it is sweet all around. Whether chanting, kirtan, book distribution, doing arati, reading books, eating prasadam, celebrating festivals or serving the deities – it is all sweet.  Without you introducing Krishna Consciousness to us, we would not have had this nectar.
I am proud of being part of your ISKCON Family.  You have made this whole globe as one family; wherever we go the ISKCON Mrdanga is going on.
Your lotus feet have travelled the globe 14 times; isn’t it a miracle? This miracle is done by you only. Only you could do it.  You wrote so many books. This is not an ordinary human feat, but you are divinely empowered.  It is nectar to read and distribute your books.
Because you are so pure; your purity is still making ISKCON grow more and more.  Only you are Jagat Guru, Srila Prabhupada!
At such a mature age, you came when normally people take retirement.  You took the job to spread Krishna Consciousness with nothing in the hand but sincerity and the order of your Guru and Krishna’s blessings.  What a wonderful Guru of ours and what a wonderful disciple of Bhaktisidhanta Saraswati Thakur.
I am so fortunate to have you as my guru.
Srila Prabhupada, you planted the seed of ISKCON and raised it with so many austerities, difficulties, and hardships.  Despite all the obstacles and hinderances, you kept going on to fulfill your mission.  We are all enjoying the fruit of your efforts.
Srila Prabhupada, please make us follow your footsteps.  Srila Prabhupada, we will try our best to serve you and your ISKCON.  So please give us the strength to do so.
Thank you for accepting me in lotus feet.  Thank you for giving us unlimited mercy and I am always seeking your mercy.

Srila Prabhupada Ki Jaya! ISKCON Ki Jaya!

Ashalata Devi Dasi

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: My personal offering to Srila Prabhupada on Vyasa-puja

Picture
The catch up continues... Last Tuesday we posted the family offering to Srila Prabhupada written by Minakshi d.d. on behalf of all 12 of Srila Prabhupada and Sri Sri Radha Shyamasundar's servants in Richmond Hill.

However below is my personal offering to Srila Prabhupada which I read to Srila Prabhupada at ISKCON Toronto. ISKCON Toronto is my initial link to Srila Prabhupada and it is in that building Srila Prabhupada said to me "...can I stay here forever..." and I feel his presence there forever. My Godbrother Krishna dasa Kaviraja das had me speak of this memory and a few more as well so that all the devotees can be closer to Srila Prabhupada and feel his continued guidance over ISKCON and Srila Prabhupada's availability to all devotees.

Dear Srila Prabhupada,

Please accept my humble obeisances at your divine lotus feet.  All glories to your divine grace.

On this auspicious occasion of  Sri Vyasapuja, I would like to offer some words but no pen or number of pages can justify your unlimited mercy and kindness towards us fallen souls.  Only because of you, Srila Prabhupada, are we in ISKCON – the Krishna Consciousness family that you have established.

Before you, Srila Prabhupada, Krishna consciousness was limited to India nd even that was not always with the understanding that Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.  But you, Srila Prabhupada, took this out of India and distributed the love of Krishna to anyone and everyone throughout the entire world. Today, because of your efforts people all over the world are being attracted to Krishna Consciousness and transforming from malechas to devotees.

Just like Bhagiratha brought the river Ganga from the celestial planets down to the earth planet, you have flooded the whole world with bhakti-yoga.  What you have done, Srila Prabhupada is even a greater treasure than what Bhagiratha has done.

In the Chaitanya-caritamrta, Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Himself predicts “Prthivite ache yadi nagaradi grama, sarvatra pracara hoibe more nama”  (“My holy name will be chanted in every town and village”) and in 1896, Srila Bhaktivinode Thakura predicted that a great personality would come to the west and preach the message of Lord Gauranga and fulfill the prediction of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprubhu.  You, Srila Prabhupada, are that great personality and you did ensure that Lord Krishna’s names are known and sung in every continent across the globe.

Srila Prabhupada, before we met you, we did not know that Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and that each and everyone of us has the opportunity to go back home, back to Godhead.  This information has been given only by you, Srila Prabhupada. You gave us the process to achieve this.

You, Srila Prabhupada, gave us the formula to get out of this material life.  Therefore, there is no way to repay what you have given us.

Srila Prabhupada, whatever little I know is because of your mercy.

I still remember your sweet memories, your pastimes and your personal association.   These are memories that I wish to never forget.

Srila Prabhupada, I would like to thank you again and again and again for your causeless mercy to me, my wife Ashalata devi dasi and my children.

Srila Prabhupada, you are our only hope to be rid of this material world.   Please, please, please do not forget me and always keep me in your lotus feet.  Please shower us with your blessings and mercy and keep us in your service and Srimati Radharani and Lord Krishna’s service forever and ever.  Please grant us the determination and strength to continue to follow your instructions and serve you and your ISKCON.

Srila Prabhupada, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Your worthless servant,

Subhavilasa das

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: Forgiveness vs. Getting One’s Favor

The following arrived in my email and is another perspective on the process of forgiveness.

Forgiveness vs. Getting One’s Favor

by Bhakti Tirtha Swami

An illustration of how the principle of anugraha works is this: Someone steals your car. Later you find out who it was, and the thief knows that you know. The thief comes to your house and very humbly apologizes, "I did it. I made a mistake. I wasn't in a proper state of mind, but I did do it and I beg forgiveness." The owner of the car forgives the thief.

That is ksama, forgiveness. Anugraha, gaining the favor of the offended party, is different. In the act of forgiveness one has given up anger or agitation concerning the theft, but that does not constitute anugraha, getting the favor of the wronged party. What constitutes anugraha is this: The next step after begging for forgiveness is that the offender works overtime, raises money, buys the same kind of car that the owner originally had, and brings it to the rightful owner.

This is the difference between the two. The extra step of rectifying the situation beyond the apology must be there for forgiveness to be complete and for favor to be bestowed upon the offender.

In the one case forgiveness was granted, but the offender had not really changed the situation, even though the offended party did not hold any grudge and never did. Nevertheless, the situation had still not been completely rectified. The offended person no longer had a car even after having forgiven the person. The situation had not been placed in order because the car was still missing.

This is one of the reasons why sometimes a person may carry a scar from offenses even when the other person who was offended does not accept it as an offense and even if one is wise enough to make an apology.

Mukunda Charan das, SA: Krishna Tattva

Krishna Das Kaviraja Maharaja explains in Chapter 2 of Caitanya-caritamrita Adi-lila that Lord Narayana possesses all six opulences in full – sad-aisvarya-purno.  He then distinguishes between Krishna and Naryana:

‘Narayana and Sri Krsna are the same Personality of Godhead, but although They are identical, Their bodily features are different’ [2.28]

‘This Personality of Godhead [Sri Krsna] has two hands and holds a flute, whereast the other [Narayana] has four hands, with conch, wheel, mace and lotus’ [2.29]

Kaviraja Maharaja then quotes Lord Brahma’s Prayers from the 10th Canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam 10.14.14:

‘O Lord of Lords, You are the seer of all creation.  You are indeed everyone’s dearest life.  Are you not, therefore, my father, Narayana?  Narayana refers to one whose abode is in the water born from Nara [Garbhodakasayi Visnu], and that Narayana is Your plenary portion.  All Your plenary portions are transcendental.  They are absolute and are not creations of maya’ [2.30]

Kaviraja Maharaja gives three proofs that Krsna is the source of Narayana from Brahma’s prayers from 2.31 to 2.57.  He establishes that Narayana is the source of the purusa avataras.  The culmination of his reasoning is that Narayana is the vilasa or pastime feature of Lord Krsna [2.58].

He then quotes the maha-vakya verse of the Bhagavatam again.  The maha-vakya verse is the principle verse of a scripture or portion of a scripture.  This verse gives the predominant conclusion of the work.  Jiva Goswami calls this verse the paribhasa sutra or ‘the emperor verse’ of Srimad Bhagavatam.  There is no verse in Bhagavatam that contradicts this verse.  Krsna Das Kaviraja Goswami completes his argument by quoting it:

ete camsa-kalah pumsah/krsnas tu bhagavan svayam/indrari vyakulam lokam/ mrdayanti yuge yuge

‘All these incarnations of Godhead are either plenary portions or parts of the plenary portions of the purusa-avataras.  But Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself.  In every age He protects the world through His different features when the world is disturbed by the enemies of Indra’ [CC 2.67 from SB 1.3.28]
