Akrura das, Gita Coaching: 20 GREAT QUOTES ON FAITH

By His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada
  1. Faith means unflinching trust in something sublime.
  2. By rendering transcendental service to Krsna, one automatically performs all subsidiary activities. This confident, firm faith, favorable to the discharge of devotional service, is called sraddha.
  3. Sraddha, faith in Krsna, is the beginning of Krsna consciousness. Faith means strong faith.
  4. Faith means complete conviction.
  5. Faith means that faith is created after reading Bhagavad-gita.
  6. Faith means one who has got firm faith in the words of Krsna.
  7. Faith means strong faith, not flickering faith.
  8. That faith means unflinching faith without any deviation, with full understanding.
  9. Faith means real faith. So whenever there is real faith, there is activity also.
  10. Faith means firm conviction that "If I become transcendentally engaged in the service of the Lord, then my life becomes successful." This is called faith. And that conviction must be firm, not tottering faith.
  11. Faith means believing firmly.
  12. Faith means to believe in the word of Krsna, that "Surrendering to Krsna I will get everything. Now, I am free. This is my perfection.'' That is called faith.
  13. Faith means acceptance. When you accept, then your faith begins. If you have got hesitation, then the faith has not begun. Or it is in the hazy state.
  14. Not that "So long God is my order supplier, I trust in Him, and as soon as He refuses to supply my order, I don't trust Him," that is not firm faith. "God is putting me in distress; still, I trust Him. Or God is putting me in happiness; still, I trust Him." That is called firm faith. In any circumstances, the faith is not withdrawn. That is firm faith.
  15. Faith means krsne bhakti, "If I surrender to Krsna, then my all perfection is there." This is called sraddha.
  16. That is faith -- means on knowledge. So faith with knowledge is very good. But beginning must be faith, with knowledge or without knowledge.
  17. Faith means to believe strongly.
  18. Faith means by seeing others, respectable persons following, "And why not I shall follow?"
  19. Faith means that you are meant for giving some service to Krsna. You should stick to that service, that path, in spite of all impediments. That is the passing of test.
  20. Faith means extreme faith. Not reserved. Faith does not mean any reservation.

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: FOCUS

The way you feel every day is largely influenced by what you focus on.

So what to focus on?

Focus on contributing to other people's lives and you will feel much better.

Do not focus on other people's imperfections or your own mistakes.

"It is the duty of every living being to perform welfare activities for the benefit of others with his life, wealth, intelligence and words."

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: HOW CAN WE SUCCEED IN SELF DISCIPLINE?

Usually when I wanted to change a bad habit or improve in something, I thought of changing what I DO. I never thought of changing the way I THINK. However, since every action is preceded by a thought, thinking is essential for changing our actions.

To change our thinking, we first need to become aware of what and how we think. That means we should be able to observe our thoughts as if we were another person. Then we need to practice planning what we will think and choosing what we will think.

By choosing what we think about, it will be much easier to choose what we do.

If we examine our thinking, it boils down to internal dialogue - how we talk to ourselves. Many people are not aware of that conversation that they have in their mind all day long. It happens automatically.

If we become aware of that conversation, we will be able to design it and influence it as we like.

So the way we talk to ourself influences the quality of our decisions about what will we do every day.

If you want to change a habit or improve in any area of your life, start with improving the quality of your internal dialogue, your conversation with yourself. Speak to yourself as someone who has your best interest at heart, and the quality of your decisions about your daily actions will greatly improve.

Self-discipline is the ability to make yourself do what you should do, when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not.

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: First Radha Krishna deities in Russia and Sri Sri Radha Govinda's mercy...

Picture
Occasionally, a heart warming email comes into your inbox that you really want to share. Last week such an email came reporting the installation of the FIRST Radha Krishna deities in Russia and the CNS (formerly known as the USSR). Also the pictures attached were of very a very gorgeous Radha Govinda. Of course this is exciting as it represents the continued expansion of Srila Prabhupada's movement and Mahaprabhu's sankirtan movement.

This email also brought with it Radha Govinda's mercy all the way to Toronto. Before just over a year ago, I had never heard of a place called Omsk, let alone thought that Srila Prabhupada's causeless mercy would come from so far away. However a dear Godbrother, HH Gopal Krishna Goswami made a request out of the blue to sponsor deities for Omsk. I did not know how to spell or pronounce the city name but I readily agreed. Only later did I find out that these were the first Radha Krishna deities in Russia and somehow a useless servant like me could play a small part in this glorious sankirtan movement.

In Toronto, we have a growing contingent of Russian devotees and last year when Gopal Krishna Maharaja mentioned Radha Krishna coming to Omsk their eyes lit up and they knew exactly where it is. For some reason we suspect that if these devotees were not serving in Toronto, they would have been along side the hundreds of devotees in Omsk for this grand occasion.

So in this way Radha Govinda now has a special connection to Toronto, Canada and although we could not make it to the installation we do hope to see Them very soon and will finally figure out where this place called "Omsk" actually  is.

Of course all of this is with the causeless mercy of Srila Prabhupada who has reeled us in and kept us all connected to Mahaprabhu's sankirtan movement. I am fortunate to be able to call Srila Prabhupada's loyal disciples as Godbrothers. HH Gopal Krisnna Goswami, HH Bhakti Vijana Goswami, HH BB Govinda Swami, HH Niranjana Swami as well as countless other devotees have worked so hard to establish centres throughout Russian and CNS and their efforts continue. We are humbled by the mercy they have given us...

The fruition of these efforts can be seen in the installation of Sri Sri Radha Govinda.

The nice email from Siksastaka Prabhu and a breif description of the installation can be found below....

All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Try to satisfy Krsna

Material civilization means to endeavor for one's personal benefit. The same thing should be done, but for the benefit of Krsna. So Krsna does not want any benefit from you. He is quite competent. He does not want. But if you do for Krsna, then you are benefited. This is the secret. Krsna says, patram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati: [Bg. 9.26] "If you give Me little flower, little..." What Krsna...? Krsna is worshiped by... Laksmi-sahasra-sata-sambhrama-sevyamanam [Bs. 5.29]. What? What does He want from you? What He'll gain by your patram puspam? But He wants from you something. That you have forgotten. This is rascaldom. We have forgotten to offer to Krsna. So Krsna consciousness movement means it is the beginning of offering everything to Krsna. Then it is successful. Try to satisfy Krsna.

Kripamoya dasa, UK: BBC all set to abolish BC and AD. Why? Its PC!

I don’t think I can take any more. As a man who teaches the ancient Indian text known as the Bhagavad-gita, wears strange flowing cotton robes and adorns his forehead with yellow clay, I have enjoyed – for quite some years – the benefits of living in a country which supports equality and social ‘diversity.’ I have lived or visited other countries where my appearance or message would be enough to get me locked up. In fact, I used to get locked up quite regularly here in England. That was until political correctness arrived over here from somewhere in the USA. At first it was a welcome visitor, a message from a country not so steeped in ancient prejudice and cultural chauvinism.

But enough is enough. Even a virtue when carried to an extreme can become a vice (say the ancient Greeks). When my country’s establishment (yet ever so leftist) broadcasting corporation begins to arbitrarily eat away at the history of the very country I live in with an attempt to change the very language I use – that is enough.

But since time is short, even for ranting, I will allow journalist Melanie Phillips to say it for me. It is surely worth a read:

One of the most sinister aspects of political correctness is the way in which its edicts purport to be in the interests of minority groups.

This is despite the fact that, very often, they are not promulgated at the behest of minorities at all, but by members of the majority who want to destroy their own culture and who use minorities to camouflage their true intentions.

The latest manifestation stars once again that all-time world champion of political correctness, the BBC. Apparently, it has decided that the terms AD and BC (Anno Domini, or the Year of Our Lord, and Before Christ) must be replaced by the terms Common Era and Before Common Era.

Actually, this edict seems to have been laid down merely by some obscure tributary of the BBC website rather than from on high.

Nevertheless, the terms CE and BCE are now increasingly finding their way onto news bulletins and on programmes such as University Challenge or Melvyn Bragg's Radio Four show In Our Time.

The reason given on the website is that, since the BBC is committed to impartiality, it is important not to alienate or offend non-Christians.

Well, I am a Jew, so I am presumably a member of this group that must not be alienated.

It so happens, however, that along with many other Jewish people I sometimes use CE and BCE since the terms BC and AD are not appropriate to me.

But the idea that any of us would be offended by anyone else using BC and AD would be totally ridiculous.

How could we possibly take offence, since these are the commonly used and understood expressions when referring to the calendar?

Moreover, I most certainly would not expect society in general to use these Common Era terms rather than BC and AD.

Indeed, I would go much further and react with undiluted scorn and disapproval to any attempt to do so.

That is because I feel passionately that a society should be allowed to express its own culture – and this attack on BC and AD, fatuous as it may seem on the surface, is yet another attack on British culture and the Christian underpinnings which provide it with its history, identity and fundamental values.

The impulse behind changing such established terms – obviously as familiar to us all as the names of the days of the week – is part of the wider desire to obliterate Christianity in British culture.

The fact remains, however, that whatever terms are used the British calendar is calibrated from the birth of Jesus.

As Ann Widdecombe remarked, whatever next – abolishing the calendar itself on the grounds that it too therefore offends non-Christians?

The reasoning behind this linguistic legerdemain is entirely spurious. There is no evidence whatever that any non-Christian group is offended by BC and AD, nor that they would like them to be replaced.

Even if they did, it cannot ever be right for minorities to seek to replace fundamental majority cultural expressions or values with their own.

To do so has nothing whatever to do with impartiality – indeed, quite the reverse. For what about the need not to offend or alienate Christians?

To ask the question is to realise how far we have travelled down this invidious road. For Christians in Britain are now routinely offended and alienated – indeed, positively harassed, and with their religious rights denied – and all in the Orwellian cause of promoting 'diversity'.

In the latest example, police have threatened a Christian cafe owner with arrest – for displaying passages from the Bible on a TV screen which are said to incite hatred against homosexuals.

Why stop at a TV screen, one might ask. For in such a climate, it is hardly frivolous to wonder how long it will be before the Bible itself is banned.

At the weekend, a campaign was launched by the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Carey, to press for greater legal protection for Christians against such attacks.

The pressure on individual Christians, however, is merely part of a far wider onslaught on Western culture through the hijacking or censorship of language.

Thus Christmas has been renamed in various places 'Winterval'.

Last week, it was reported that Southwark council has renamed its Guy Fawkes fireworks display 'The Colour Thief: A Winter Extravaganza Celebrating the Change of the Seasons'.

This ludicrous gesture is presumably aimed at being more 'inclusive' of Catholics upset by references to the 17th-century Popish gunpowder plot.

What it actually does is exclude Britons by airbrushing out part of their history.

Even more bizarre are the latest edicts by so-called 'equality' experts, who say that  the traditional black garb of witches in children's stories leads to racism (yes, seriously).

Witches should therefore be given pink hats, and fairies dressed in dark colours.

Meanwhile Anne O'Connor, an 'early years consultant', advises that 'white paper', especially in schools, provokes racism since it does not reflect the range of hues of the human race.

Maybe Ms O'Connor needs especially strong spectacles. Has anyone ever seen a human being with skin as white as paper?

And finally, teachers are told they should be ready to lie, if necessary, when asked by pupils what their favourite colour is and, in the interests of good race relations, answer 'black' or 'brown'.

Can you believe this? What on earth has our society come to when grown individuals in receipt of public money descend to such mind-blowing imbecility?

Calling children as young as two 'racist' is simply grotesque. Helping them 'unlearn' negative associations with dark colours is to try to brainwash them in ways reminiscent of Soviet Stalinism.

But then, political correctness is all about dictating what people are permitted or forbidden to say as a way of controlling and reshaping a society and its values.

Look at the way the Labour leader Ed Miliband has refused to call people who defraud the welfare system 'benefit cheats'.

He has condemned abuses of the welfare system and said they must be stopped. So why does he say he cannot accuse the people who behave in this way of being 'cheats'?

The answer is surely that political correctness means you can't criticise anyone who does wrong if they belong to a group of people who are considered marginalised or oppressed.

This is effectively to give such groups a free pass for any bad behaviour. And anyone who dares criticise is accused of 'demonising' such groups.

This means, of course, that those who criticise such bad behaviour are themselves demonised.

Indeed, they can be positively victimised and even threatened with their lives by vicious campaigns on Twitter or the internet – all on the grounds that they have 'demonised' some 'victim' group or other.  If this wasn't so terrifying, it would be hilarious.

The result of this hijacking of the language is that debate becomes impossible because words like rights, tolerance, liberal, justice, truth and many more have come to mean the precise opposite of what they really do mean.

The result of this inversion of right and wrong is that morality itself has been reversed or negated. Politically correct language is thus a way of shifting the very centre of moral and political gravity.

So what was once considered far-Left has become the centre-ground; and those who stand on the real centre-ground are now dismissed as extreme.

The attack on BC and AD is merely the latest salvo in the war of the words, part of the defining madness of our time.

ISKCON Toronto, Canada: Video: Re-Living the Double-Decker Bus Kirtan!

During the recent Toronto Film Festival, the Hare Krishna's took the opportunity to share the spotlight with the stars by loading onto a double-decker bus and chanting exuberantly through the downtown streets!  Here's a quick clip to help re-live the wild experience.  Keep an eye out for the part where we pass by a tattoo studio owned by Yamuna Jivana das, one of the many artistic devotees of our community!  The name of his tattoo studio is BluGod (and it features a beautiful picture of Krishna on it's window facing Yonge Street)!

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: My Wife Is A Carjacker!

Yesterday my granddaughter had a close encounter with a rattlesnake but was saved by a dog which reminded my daughter of when her mother carjacked some tourists on their way to the Palace.

My daughter Vraja lives in Colorado.  Her husband’s grandmother owns a cabin in the mountains that the extended family all has access to. Vraja was there with her almost 8 year old daughter and two other families that also had some young girls for a total of 5 girls.

They wanted to go outside for a walk. Vraja was finishing something up and told them not to  go  by themselves and wait for her. They said they would wait by the car in the driveway which they did.

Suddenly there was a commotion and all the girls started screaming. Vraja heard “Rattlesnake!”  and immediately thought the worst. She also heard one of the girls yell “Sugar!” which was the name of the dog with the girls.

By the time Vraja got outside Sugar had rushed by the girls and attacked the rattlesnake and gotten bitten.  A neighbor happened to be passing by on an ATV and he drove over the snake and killed it.

It took an hour to get the dog to an emergency vet clinic but that was fast enough as they had called them so the staff was waiting with anti-venom serum and put the dog on an IV.  After an expensive few hours the dog was released with two weeks of medication and a good prognosis.

This reminded Vraja of an incident that happened when she was about 3 years old. Her mother Vidya was walking with her on the road just before you see the Palace.  She was late stage pregnant with Marken at the time.

What Vraja remembers was an animal being very aggressive and Vidya putting her up on her shoulders.

The full story as I remember Vidya telling me at the time was that a rabid fox came out on the road and started snarling at them. If she tried to move the fox would move closer to them. If she stood still it would get lost in its hallucinations, rolling its head and snapping at imaginary foes.

Being extremely pregnant and with a small child, Vidya felt she was unable to run fast enough to get away, given the short distance between them and the fox.  Her thought was to put Vraja on her shoulders so at least she wouldn’t get bitten.

In such a dilemma with a clear and present danger from a rabid fox but unable to move without it drawing closer, she tried to flag down a passing car but it didn’t stop.

The next car that came by was an elderly couple on their way for a tour of Prabhupada’s Palace. Vidya jumped in front of them so they either had to hit her or stop. Once they stopped Vidya quickly moved to the back door of the car, opened it, threw Vraja in and jumped in herself.

The couple was certainly startled but  grasped the situation and drove them to safety.

Circumstances aside, what Vidya effectively did was carjack them, hence my title, My Wife Is A Carjacker. :-) An example of a partial truth  giving an erroneous impression equivalent to a lie.

Once to safety she sent word to me and I came and dispatched the fox, burning the corpse so no raccoons would eat it and become infected themselves.

Seeing nocturnal animals during the day should always be cause for suspicion. If they are hallucination g and foaming at the mouth, all caution should be exercised. In 38 years of living in New Vrindaban I have only had a handful of incidents with rabid animals but it is a possibility and devotees need to be aware of the possibility.

Rabies can be transmitted by asymptomatic animals so any animal bite should be treated seriously and the animal tested.

Here was a case where Vidya was saved by her spiritual master,  because if the tourists weren’t on the way to visit his memorial, the Palace, the outcome could have been bad.

1970 September 26: "Tennyson may have felt something when he chanted Tennyson, but does anyone else? Does Mr. Ginsberg want to chant Tennyson, Tennyson? But everyone enjoys chanting Krishna. He is the center of everyone and everything."

Srila Prabhupada's Letters

1970 September 26: "It is only under certain conditions that the spiritual energy of Krishna becomes material. Actually everything is spiritual and when we hear the name Krishna, which is identical with Krishna, we must remember, and in that way everything is purified."

Srila Prabhupada's Letters

1969 September 26: "This pranamoya, annamoya, etc. are for persons too much engrossed in the bodily concept. Such studies are for neophyte transcendentalists. Devotional service is far above such platform. Our prana is surrendered to Krishna."

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: CHOICE

Growing up at my home was at times a big pain. Why? Because my dad made me always take responsibility for everything in my life. Whenever I said something like "Dad, my girlfriend makes me so mad," without fail Dad would come back with: "Now come on, Sean, no one can make you mad unless you let them. It's your choice. You choose to be mad."

Or if I said, "My new biology teacher stinks. I am never going to learn a thing," Dad would say, "Why don't you go to your teacher and give him some suggestions? Change teachers. Get a tutor if you have to. If you don't learn biology, Sean, it's your own fault, not your teacher's."

He never let me off the hook. He was always challenging me, making sure that I never blamed someone else for the way I acted. Luckily my mom let me blame other people and things for my problems or I might have turned out psycho.

I often screamed back, "You're wrong, Dad! I didn't choose to be mad. She MADE, MADE, MADE me mad. Just get off my back and leave me alone."

You see, Dad's idea that you are responsible for your life was hard medicine for me to swallow as a teenager. But, without hindsight, I see the wisdom in what he was doing. He wanted me to learn that there are two types of people in this world - the proactive and the reactive - those who take responsibility for their lives and those who blame; those who make it happen and those who get happened to.

By the North Shore

Pictou To Melville, Nova Scotia

Impressions of today; Highway 6. It was a calm ocean to my right. Once the darkness ended some fog came to replace it. I saw deer tracks and a wild pheasant in flight, my first ever. Chestnut trees, rose hips, wild raspberry bushes, and rustic barns neatly kept to add to simple homes. No bill-boards, Yay! And the road, Highway 6- I was there for 6 hours- was saying to me, "Stay on this track!" People were rather reserved, there were some outside but mostly the were found in a vehicle, Booooo! I did pass by a patch of lavender and the fragrance was nostril stunning.

To upstage all the sights sounds and smells was the quality time with the brahmacaris. Dhruva had executed his first havan (fire ceremony) for an initiation. Heidi accepted the Sanskrit name Hladini Shakti which means God's pleasure potency. Also 4 month old Gokul, whose parents are accommodating us in their home received from Dhruva his first grains, a mixture of sweetened milk and rice.

Some neighbors participated in the program and chanted enthusiastically. They had never seen this type of rite-of-passage before. I was proud of Dhruva on his first priestly duty. Yogendra, like Dhruva being Nova Scotia born, had his first hand at preparing kofta (veggie balls soaked in rich tomato sauce) one of the preps for the feast.

These two young men and their grooming guru, Nitai Ram, along with five more celibate monks, are a homogeneous working team. And one of my main reasons for commencing the fourth walk (starting at the east coast) was to spend time with them in the area where they were to be travelling. The company is spiritually surcharging.

Japa Group: The First Regulative Principle

This week's Japa Room brought some nice realisations from those attending - one devotee mentioned when their chanting is becoming hard and his mind is becoming strong and he can't concentrate on the sound....then he increases the volume of his voice and thus he is able to concentrate again and forget the mind.

It reminded me of a nice quote from Srila Prabhupada on this subject.
The first regulative principle is that one must chant the Hare Krsna maha−mantra loudly enough so that he can hear himself, and one must vow to chant a fixed number of rounds. Sri Caitanya caritamrta Antya−lila 11.24
