Gurudeva, Namaste I would like to ask you the following question: The connection and disconnection of the individual consciousness of all living entities from the physical body is known as birth and death. Why does it get connected to a physical body in the first place? Yours in yoga Janardan M. Answer: He Desires to Enjoy the Lord's Energy When the pure living entity in the spiritual world misuses his minute independence by desiring to lord it over the energy of the Supreme Lord, he is given an opportunity to do so by being awarded a material body here in this material world. Japa Group: Tricking The Mind

Hare Krsna my dear devotees. Today we had a wonderful session of the Japa Room on mayapur.tv. Many devotees were sharing their experiences about their chanting during the past week.

A devotee experienced an improvement by sitting properly and concentrating on the sound vibration of the mantra and this made him feel the power of the holy names.

In my case, I find it difficult to control my mind - I mean to just concentrate on the mantra because many thoughts of what I have to do come to my mind. I don't know why, just when I get my beads all the good things that I need to remember come to my mind....ideas, new things to improve my work, my service etc. So what I did today was to preach to the mind and tell it that I would take care of those things later but at this time I would not stop chanting until I finished the rounds I was supposed to chant. So the mind had to surrender to the mantra and stop sending all those thoughts.

I wish you have a great week of chanting with lots of realisations.

your servant,

Aruna devi

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Bhaktivinoda Thakura's prediction fulfilled

Very good preaching is going on here. American boys are very beautifully chanting Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. They are chanting loudly. They are eagerly hearing Gita and Bhagavata siddhanta. They are also practicing sadacara, leaving all bad habits. Also, they are taking Mahaprabhu's mahaprasada. By doing this their lives are becoming successful (danyati dhanya). When they do kirtana, dancing with their arms upraised, I remember Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura's predictions and become so pleased. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura wrote very hopefully, "When will that day come when white people, that is Europeans and Americans, join with all others and loudly sing Mahaprabhu's kirtana." So I can see that that day has come.

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Namacarya Srila Haridas Thakura ki Jaya!

Picture
The last post was to mark the start of World Holy Name Week and an excellent way to start this week is to glorify Namacarya Srila Haridas Thakura who's disappearance day is marked today on the vaishnava calendar.

As this story indicates, we will be fortunate to develop a sliver of the taste of the holy name demonstrated by Srila Haridas Thakura and the honorific title of "namacrya" is most appropriate for the exalted Vaishnava personality. The following is the narration of one nectarean story...

Sri Haridas Thakura is an eternally liberated associate of the Lord. The associates of the Lord are worshipable wherever they make their appearance. Haridas Thakura appeared in a family of Yavanas (Mohammedans) but from his very birth he was very deeply devoted to the Holy Names of Sri Krsna.

When he came to live by the banks of the Ganges, Advaita Acarya was very happy to get his association. The brahmana residents of Fulia were very pleased to see how he worshipped the Holy Name, and they used to come everyday to have his darshan. Gradually word began to spread of his glories. When the Mohammedan administrator came to know of all this he began to burn with malice and went to the local Mohammedan king to inform him, “Though he is Mohammedan, he behaves as a Hindu, are therefore he should be brought here for trial.” Hearing the words of that sinful man, the local king who was also very sinful, had Hari das Thakur brought there immediately. [C. B. Adi 16.37].

The Mohammedan King told Haridas, “Just give up this chanting and say the Kalma (prayer of the Mohammedans).”

Haridasa Thakura replied, “The Supreme Lord is one, though His names might be different. The Hindu shastras are the Puranas and the Muslim sastra is the Koran. Everyone acts as he is inspired by the Lord, as also do I. Some yavanas become Hindus and some Hindus become yavanas, to worship the Lord. O Maharaja, you can now judge me.”

Hearing these words the Kazi replied that it would be necessary to punish him. Hearing the decree of the Kazi, the Muluk pati addressed Haridasa, “My brother, just follow your own religion. Then you will have nothing to worry about. Otherwise you will have to be punished.”

In reply to this Haridasa Thakura exclaimed, “Even if you cut my body into pieces, I will never give up the chanting of Hari nama.” [C. B. Adi 6.94]

After hearing these words of Haridasa spoken with great determination, the Kazi declared, “He should be beaten in twenty two market places. If he doesn’t die after this, then I will know that the learned gentleman speaks the truth.”

Thus having heard the words of the Kazi, the sinful Muluk pati then ordered that Haridasa Thakura be beaten in twenty two market places. Haridasa remembered the Lord by chanting “Krsna Krsna”, and in the happiness of that remembrance, he didn’t feel any bodily inconvenience. [C. B. Adi 16.102].

As the demoniac associates of Hiranyakasipu tried in so many ways to kill Sri Prahlada Maharaja, but were unsuccessful, similarly the demoniac Mohammedans, though they tried to harm Haridasa
Thakura, were unable to do so. Haridasa Thakur was immersed in the nectar of the Name and thus gradually the Mohammedans could understand that he wasn’t an ordinary person.

Thus they humbly submitted to the Thakura, “Haridasa! We can understand that you are a genuine saintly person. No one can do anything to you. But the Mulukpati won’t understand any of this. Rather he will have our heads.” Hearing their frightened pleas Haridasa’s external consciousness ceased and he entered into deep meditation on the Lord’s Holy Name.

Then the Mohammedans carried his body on their shoulders to the Mulukpati, who surmised that he was dead. Thinking as such he ordered that his body be thrown in the Ganga. Haridasa’s body floated down the Ganga until he reached Fulia ghat, where he got out of the water and began to loudly chant Hari Nama. Seeing the greatness of Haridasa Thakura, the Mulukpati became fearful. Along with the other Mohammedans he came there and begged Haridas Thakur to forgive him for his offence.

Considering him to be a holy man, they all offered their salutations and thus were delivered from their offences. Having witnessed the pastimes of the Thakura the devotees were in ecstasy.

And in this way we can understand the exalted position of Namacarya Sri Haridas Thakura. It would be very nice that as harinam takes place in markets around the world we can remember the mood of Sri Haridas Thakura as he was immersed in the holy names...

This also serves as a reminder that with Gauranga's mercy it does not matter what caste or creed we are born with, whether we are white bodied or brown bodied, born in a Christian, Muslim or Hindu family, the Holy names reign Supreme...

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Happy World Holy Name Week! Flood the world with the Maha mantra!

Picture
Hare Krishna   Hare Krishna   Krishna Krishna   Hare Hare
Hare Rama   Hare Rama   Rama Rama   Hare Hare

"If the surface of the globe is over-flooded with the chanting of the Hare Krsna mantra, the people of the world will be very, very happy." ~ Srila Prabhupada  (Srimad Bhagavatam purport 4.24.11)

Happy World Holy Name week! For the next 10 days we have the opportunity to please Srila Prabhupada and expand Mahaprabhu's glorious sankirtan movement by organizing or participating in at least a few events. Spreading and chanting the holy names far and wide will resonate and wake the sleeping souls...this is our duty...

From many options, below is a selection of 10 suggestions from the World Holy name committee :
-  Nagar Sankirtan - Harinaam processions with WHNW and mahamantra banners.
-  Japathon - Pledges from devotees and congregation to chant extra rounds
during this period.
- 24 hours or 12 hours Sankirtan - non-stop chanting for 24/12 hours
- Morning SB on Holy names as the theme - Morning Bhagavatam classes emphasizing on glories and importance of Holy Names.
- Japa Seminars – Seminars on japa related topics e.g japa reform, 10 offenses, types of japa etc
- WHNW Sunday feast lectures & dramas – Presentations based on importance of Holy names and related topics.
-  Japa Booth – Putting a table with beads and pamphlets in the temple encouraging new comers to get the beads and chant.
- Hare Krishna on Radio - Hare Krishna Kirtans specially SP dhun on radio.
- Holy Name walks - Padyatras to nearby towns and villages to distribute holy names, Prabhupada books and Prasad.
-  Video, multimedia shows and Harinaam concerts for public.
- Hare krishna mahamantra and WHNW hoardings throughout the cities.

Of course these are just a few ways to make World Holy Name Week the biggest yet.  Your local ISKCON centre will be organizing events which you can participate in or assist in suggesting and organizing events.
For example in Toronto there is a double decker bus Harinam which will make its way through the city and in Brampton there is a youth kirtan evening to name a couple of many events that will occur.

So wherever you are reading this from...please try to do this service to Srila Prabhupada and spread the holy names as part of this global effort. Now all that is left to do is fill in the bottom part of the below flyer...

Ekendra das, Alachua, USA: We want more than we get

What is it about our life here that makes us sad?

Everything we love and identify with is temporary. Defining events that are gone never come back. It's not enough we can access them through memory. It's not enough we can talk about them. We want to re-live them. Forever. We want more than what we get. We don't want our best memories to be only memories. Life is too short for our liking. No sooner do the good times begin than they end.

Then our memories fail. The experiences fade. The keenness of emotions felt, the thrills themselves, all evaporate. Then our bodies drift into uselessness and sometimes our minds, too. Everything we've lived for, every memory we've tried to preserve, the dear moments that seemed to give the pain of our brief lives meaning, all totally disappear from our minds and the world.

We want more than what we get.

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: Vidya at Shakerwoods

Vidya is in her craft selling season with shows every weekend until the beginning of October.  He just finished three weekends at Shaker Woods Festival near Columbiana,  OH, just south of Youngstown.

She gets a discount off her show fee if she teaches a couple of kids classes plus she gets to keep the class fee which is modest and mainly covers materials cost for the craft project the kids do in the class.

While she was doing her class a video crew came around doing a promotional video for the show so she got another increment on her 15 minutes of fame.

If you pause the video at 1:08 look in the background and you will see a squared off looking grey facade of a booth. That is hers.  Tulasi and Marken, our youngest sons, are here and they  actually worked the show, though you won’t see them in the video. The festival is on private land so the booths are permanent and you have to buy one to get into the show, so we actually own it.

Vidya’s cameo is from 1:19 to 1:44.

Here is the video:

FYI, while getting the link for Shaker Woods I notice that this video is right on the first page with Vidya as the featured photo on it.

This weekend and for the next couple after this they will be at Yankee Peddler so stop by and check them out if you are in the Canton, OH area.  Her booth is in The Glen and shes sells gourds crafted into various animals, bird  houses, mushrooms, Halloween decorations etc.

Japa Group: Reflections After Each Session

The Japa Room is approaching and my thoughts turn to the discussion subject - this week were are reflecting on our daily notes on Japa....how we felt or experienced...maybe something we tried that helped us improve...reflections after each session of chanting.

It will be interesting and inspiring to hear the different devotees reflect on their realisations. I will talk mainly on this but also introduce a new subject....last week we focused on determination in chanting and I used a nice quote to illustrate the point.

Even there may be some problems, always try to remain in Krishna Consciousness. Do not give up chanting simply due to some external difficulties. Under all circumstance you should always chant Hare Krishna.

Madhavendra Puri, New Govardhana, AU: Won-Durr Boiz in Poland (Part 15) – Things Heating Up for Woodstock [Kostrzyn]

[The Won-Durr Boiz diary series is based on four ex-gurukuli brothers (surname: Durr) coming together for the first time to share Krsna consciousness with the outside world.  Madhavendra Puri (the author and middle elder) has been waiting in Radhadesh (Belgium) for his brothers to arrive.  Nitai Canda (the eldest) and Rupa Gosvami (the youngest) arrive first, and Bhisma Deva (the middle younger) is scheduled to come half way through.  Their adventure takes them through Belgium, Germany and Poland, for rathayatras, festival tours and kirtana events.  These diaries aim to bring inspiration and joy to the readers, and hopefully encourage others to entangle themselves in Lord Caitanya's Sankirtana movement – whether for the spiritual benefits or simply for the fun.]

Saturday 30th, July 2011.

HG Vaiyasaki Prabhu and his wife were the only VIPs that had arrived (HH Indradyumna Swami was fasting so didn't require much service).  My day was spent on standby, serving them their meals and otherwise engrossing myself in reading and chanting.  It was raining so there wasn't much else to do.  I spent the evening doing a writing blitz, catching up on weeks of unfinished work, completing the majority of the quota for July.  I served up some evening sweets and tea to Vaiyasaki Prabhu, checked my email and then went to bed.  I was going to bed earlier than any other time on tour.

Sunday 31st, July 2011.

I woke up early, battling my mid-tour cold.  There were still no new VIP arrivals so the usual program slipped into play.  I started up studying for an essay for Bhakti Vaibhava, Canto One.  I hadn't had a chance to dig into it yet but I took advantage of the good sleep and mental space to make some baby steps, hoping that it might increase the likelihood of having something nice and presentable by the end of tour for my little study life back in Radhadesh.

I was startled by an early lunch session for the VIPs.  HG Patita Pavana Prabhu had arrived (Prabhupada disciple, astrologer and Woodstock veteran).  It was no time before I had a whole social table of devotees to serve, with some assistance from the other VIP staff.

Patita Pavana Prabhu started up an astrological consultation right after lunch.  Devotees came one by one to have their fate stretched out in front of them.  Dhira Mataji (the head of VIP service division) warned me that the next day was going to be full of action, as more VIPs were supposed to be coming.  I mentally prepped myself for more fun and more focus.  Krsna was letting me get away with some sadhana and laziness, but soon the Woodstock atmosphere was going to permeate through the ether and the mood of the Tour was going to shift into full throttle.

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: Does America Need Manufacturing?

Gabriele Stabile/Cesuralab for The New York Times.

You can drive almost anywhere in the state of Michigan — pick a point at random and start moving — and you will soon come upon the wreckage of American industry. If you happen to be driving on the outer edge of Midland, you'll also come upon a cavern of steel beams and ductwork, 400,000 square feet in all. When this plant, which is being constructed by Dow Kokam, a new venture partly owned by Dow Chemical, is up and running early next year, it will produce hundreds of thousands of advanced lithium-ion battery cells for hybrid and electric cars. Just as important, it will provide about 350 jobs in a state with one of the nation's highest unemployment rates.

Over the last two years, the federal government has doled out nearly $2.5 billion in stimulus dollars to roughly 30 companies involved in advanced battery technology. Many of these might seem less like viable businesses than scenery for political photo ops — places President Obama can repeatedly visit (as he did early this month) to demonstrate his efforts at job creation. But in fact, the battery start-ups are more legitimate, and also more controversial, than that. They represent "the far edge," as one White House official put it, of where the president or Congress might go to create jobs.

For decades, the federal government has generally resisted throwing its weight —and its money — behind particular industries. If the market was killing manufacturing jobs, it was pointless to fight it. The government wasn't in the business of picking winners. Many economic theorists have long held that countries inevitably pursue their natural or unique advantages. Some advantages might arise from fertile farmland or gifts of vast mineral resources; others might be rooted in the high education rates of their citizenry. As the former White House economic adviser Lawrence Summers put it, America's role is to feed a global economy that's increasingly based on knowledge and services rather than on making stuff. So even as governments in China and Japan offered aid to industries they deemed important, factories in the United States closed or moved abroad. The conviction in Washington was that manufacturing deserved no special dispensation. Even now, as unemployment ravages the country, so-called industrial policy remains politically toxic. Legislators will not debate it; most will not even speak its name.

By almost any account, the White House has fallen woefully short on job creation during the past two and a half years. But galvanized by the potential double payoff of skilled, blue-collar jobs and a dynamic clean-energy industry — the administration has tried to buck the tide with lithium-ion batteries. It had to start almost from scratch. In 2009, the U.S. made less than 2 percent of the world's lithium-ion batteries. By 2015, the Department of Energy projects that, thanks mostly to the government's recent largess, the United States will have the capacity to produce 40 percent of them. Whichever country figures out how to lead in the production of lithium-ion batteries will be well positioned to capture "a large piece of the world's future economic prosperity," says Arun Majumdar, the head of the Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). The batteries, he stressed, are essential to the future of the global-transportation business and to a variety of clean-energy industries.

We may marvel at the hardware and software of mobile phones and laptops, but batteries don't get the credit they deserve. Without a lithium-ion battery, your iPad would be a kludge. The new Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf rely on big racks of lithium-ion battery cells to hold their electric charges, and a number of new models — including those from Ford and Toyota, which use similar battery technology — are on their way to showrooms within the next 18 months.

This flurry of activity comes against a dismal backdrop. In the last decade, the United States lost some five million manufacturing jobs, a contraction of about one-third. Added to the equally brutal decades that preceded it, this decline left large swaths of the country, the Great Lakes region in particular, without a clear economic future. As I drove through the hollowed-out cities and towns of Michigan earlier this year, it was hard to tell how some of these places could survive. Inside the handful of battery companies that I visited, though, the mood was starkly different. Many companies are working on battery-pack designs for dozens of car models. At the Johnson Controls factory in Holland, Mich., Ray Shemanski, who is in charge of the company's lithium-ion operation, said, "We have orders that would fill this plant right now." Every company I visited not only had plans to get their primary factories running full speed by 2012 or 2013 but also to build or expand others. Jennifer Granholm, Michigan's former governor, has predicted that advanced batteries will create 62,000 jobs over the next decade.

New Vrindavan, USA: Kartika 24 Hour Kirtan is Oct 15 – 16, 2011

Each year the 24 Hour Kirtan gets bigger and better. The first 24 Hour Kirtan in 2007 was just a group of friends coming together to celebrate the chanting of the Maha Mantra. Now in it's fifth year, the 24 Hour Kirtan has become one of the largest kirtan events on the East Coast. The idea is to chant the Hare Krishna Mahamantra continuously for 24 hours, as is done in Vrindavan India 365 days a year. Featuring some of the world's most respected Bhakti chanters, the festival is open to all. Donations are welcome and needed to help support the festival. The 24 Hour Kirtan is a not-for-profit event which means that after production costs such as travel, meals, sound systems, promotional supplies, accounting etc. are covered, any funds left over will be used towards next year's 24 Hour Kirtan. Please note that your donations DO NOT include accommodations. To find and book accommodations click here.
