H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Tuesday 13 September 2011--Why Do I Exist?--and--How is the Spiritual Body Made?

Uploaded from Sofia, Bulgaria Why do I exist? This is the most basic, essential question that every human should know the answer to. If we have no idea why we exist, what is the difference between us and the animals? There is no difference. The animals eat; we eat. The animals sleep; we sleep. The animals mate; we mate. The animals defend themselves, and we also defend ourselves. What differentiates us from the animals is our ability to ponder the purpose of our existence. The modern day scientists foolishly tell us that there is no reason at all for our existence, that we are simply the products of a random combination of material elements. But nothing could be further from the truth because order does not arise out of chaos. It's not that we can throw a stick of dynamite into a stack of building materials and expect to get a nicely constructed house out of the explosion. There has to be supreme organizer behind this creation, and our purpose is to live in harmony with His purpose. Dear Gurudeva, Bless me. My question is: The material body is made up of bones and flesh. But how is the spiritual body made? Kowsthub Srihari Answer: Composed of Eternity, Knowledge, and Bliss The spiritual body is composed of eternity, knowledge, and bliss. Song on Street and Sand

Miami, Florida

The Hispanic Cuban boys danced salsa-like in front. Poised in front of them were the girls in an attempted two rows, with smiles, penetrated through the cafe and bar evening crowds at the Coconut Grove. Behind the dancers were positioned the rest of us boys in a subdued sway. As champagne, whiskey, brandy and beer poured out, either swirled around before consumption or just plain downed the throats of such enthusiasts, our parade presented another world. The maha-mantra pulsated with the drums. With the courtesy of Krishna I led the maha-mantra, "Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare" to which all of the processionists responding.

This is, of course, grass roots Hare Krishna stuff and it feels just downright great. We were stirring the crowds and adding flavour to the evening.

Once that was accomplished, over and out, Jim Goswami drove me to Harbor Island, a super-posh district, but what we could see was merely an occasional glow at the beach as lightning burst from behind the darkest of clouds in the night. There we chanted the softened version of kirtan, collective chanting. Japa is the utterance of Krishna names with the assistance of meditational beads. This is also a grassroots aspect of Krishna devotionalism. With great chanters of the past to remember - saints such as Bhativinod Thakur and Haridas Thakur, our day, or rather, night, was filled with their mercy.

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: 9-11. 10 years later...

Picture
Like most people, we were shocked and dismayed 10 years ago with the 9-11 attack on American soil. The same city that Srila Prabhupada came to deliver the fallen souls by spreading the LOVE of God was the scene of terror.

On a regular basis we recite,
"vāñchā-kalpatarubhyaś ca  kṛpā-sindhubhya eva ca  patitānāṁ pāvanebhyo  vaiṣṇavebhyo namo namaḥ" which means "I offer my respectful obeisances unto all the Vaiṣṇava devotees of the Lord. They are just like desire trees who can fulfill the desires of everyone, and THEY ARE FULL OF COMPASSION FOR THE FALLEN CONDITIONED SOULS."

So of course devotees naturally feel this compassion. Compassion for all the conditioned souls that attained this rare human birth and had it wasted without the chance to receive Gauranga's mercy.

It also reminds us how fortunate we are. Our spiritual leader based his teachings on vedic scriptures and backed it up. He thought us to think, question and understand. In fact he even spoke and wrote about fanaticism. Of course one of the more popular quotes is "Religion without philosophy is sentiment, or sometimes fanaticism, while philosophy without religion is mental speculation."

However in a purport of Srimad Bhagavatam Srila Prabhupada also warns about fanaticism and when speaking about those taking birth in "violent non-vedic societies", Srila Prabhupada states " As a result, they fall into fanaticism, embracing merely sectarian, dogmatic views of religion. Such unfortunate persons are completely out of touch with their own eternal function in life and consider things to be vastly different than they are in reality.

So compassion was and remains the order of the day and for the decade past and the decade ahead. It also serves as a warning to fanaticism and the only shelter in this age of kali yuga is the holy name. September 11th falls within the World Holy Name week and with renewed purpose and compassion for the fallen conditioned souls we must perform nama yajna.

Bharatavarsa.net: Book distribution seminar: Always Be Ready for a Lesson

One day during the 2010 fall semester at Louisiana State University, I learned from a person who had no prior experience the proper mood for distributing transcendental books.

As I stood on campus late one afternoon, I prayed to Sri Gurudeva to be inspired to try harder to give Srila Prabhupada's books to others. Suddenly I noticed a fellow approaching and quickly recognized him as the same student wearing a tie-dyed shirt who had just taken a soft Gita only a few minutes earlier. "Oh, great," I thought, "he looks like he's in the mood to chat. Can't he see I'm busy and it's getting late?"

"Hey, any luck with those books?"

"Yeah," I replied. "Thanks again." I turned away, hoping he would keep walking. Still, a voice in my heart beckoned me to remain open. Maybe he would sincerely want to know more about Krishna's teachings.

"Why do you sell these books?" he asked. I told him, in a nutshell, the story of how I came to Krishna consciousness.

Listening closely and holding the Bhagavad-gita in his hand, he seemed confident and enlivened. I learned that his name was Derek and that he studied nuclear physics. He had recently been accepted into an elite program where he would be trained as a specialist for the Navy, a career which would take him to many places around the world.

"Can I come along with you and help?" he proposed. By now I got it through my thick head that this was Krishna's plan. Perhaps I should try not to get in the way.

"Sure! Follow me and try to catch on."

We walked into the student union, where I presented a book to a boy who listened to my presentation but wasn't interested. I assessed my attempt and told Derek my conclusion.

"If you stop them purposefully," I explained, "they become more receptive."

"Can I try that one?" Derek asked, smiling and pointing to the hardcover Bhagavad-gita in my hand. He took it and immediately approached the first person he saw standing by the cafeteria entrance.

"Do you want to learn about Hare Krishna today?" he asked the young lady. She was quiet and stand-offish. He continued: "This is an important book because it teaches the real religion. Even the Catholic God comes from Hare Krishna, so this the most original scripture, not the Bible."

When she showed no interest and started to leave, he asked, "You have time to read the menu posted on the wall, but not this great book?"

As she walked away, he didn't seem at all disappointed, but rather more enthusiastic to try again.

"Where did you learn to preach like that?" I asked Derek.

He replied calmly, "Well, the Baptists are more in-your-face than that, right? Why not tell the people how it is?"

As we continued touring the premises, it seemed that each person Derek approached would stop, at once become pleasant, and offer his or her attention. Stepping outside of the student union, Derek directed us toward a young lady sipping a coffee she held in one hand while reading a book she held in the other.

"This is Shannon," he said to me. "Shannon, do you want to learn about Hare Krishna today?" He quickly convinced her to hear my presentation and take a book. She gave a donation and decided to join our newly formed preaching yatra. The three of us ventured toward the student apartments, stopping students along the way.

We met Derek's roommate on his way to the gym and spoke to him about our books and the importance of spiritual education. Our real religion, we explained, is to live simply, without artificial "necessities," to use our energy for God's service, and to depend on God in all circumstances. He agreed that this is how one learns to become honest and tolerant, and tears of appreciation welled up in his eyes.

Next Derek stopped a Christian girl who claimed she was very devoted to studying only the Bible. He told her that Hare Krishna is actually what she was searching for, and then he looked to me for further explanation. I thanked her for worshiping the Lord and told her that the Bhagavad-gita would enrich her understanding of God's personality, which would be a great service to Christ. She agreed and gave a nice donation.

In this way, by the mercy of Srila Prabhupada, the books quickly took their paths into the arms of so many different types of students. What brought us together was the urgent desire of Derek to wake up the sleeping souls at his school. We must have glimpsed the mood of Mahaprabhu's nagar-sankirtana in Sri Navadvipa dhama: selfless, focused endeavor for spreading Krishna's glories.

After Derek sold more books than I did, emptying my bag, he, Shannon, and I walked back to the sankirtana bus and enjoyed some light prasadam and group chanting, and I taught them how to chant japa. At the end of the day, Derek and Shannon walked back to the campus in a blissful mood while we drove away to the next engagement.

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: Tenth Anniversary of 9/11

How a bicycle is the most poignant memory of that day for me.

The 10th anniversary of 9/11 has come and gone. 9/11 has about as much relevance to today’s kids in grade school as World War 11 had to my generation — something that happened before we were born that people were still talking about. Realizing that makes the WWII experience and how it affected my parent’s generation much more vivid to me.

I experienced the day like most Americans did — glued to the TV set watching it unfold. Although for someone in the world today will be the equivalent of their personal 9/11, what made this so profound was the shared enormity of it, watching a major building collapse live with 100s of millions of other people somehow made it much greater that having your door kicked in and your male family members disappear forever.

Over a ten year period from the late 1970s to the late 1980s, I spent a total of about 3 years in New York City involved in various business ventures. Especially in the mid 80s, Advaita and I had seen that the over reliance of New Vrindaban on what passed for “sankirtan” was a huge potential problem, as was borne out by the FBI raid in 1987. So we were trying to come up with an alternative.

Prior to the raid we had spent time in New York city trying to make a business and preaching center happen. We started as street peddlers, expanded that operation, then got into wholesale to supply our own vendors and eventually other vendors as well.

As such I spent the latter part of 1985 and all of 1986 working in NYC. I still considered myself living in NV as my fanily was there but I was spending most of my time in NYC.

We would travel over the mountains as regularly as we could to visit the holy dhama and despite People’s Airline flights of $19 one way, most times we drove. We always knew when we were getting close to the end of the return journey as coming up through New Jersey we would see the Twin Towers looming over the Hudson, and it was like a beacon drawing us into the city.

Traveling around New York often took the form of taking the subway. Many times I would come up at a station I was unfamiliar with and routine procedure on hitting the streets was to get my bearings by looking around and seeing the Twin Towers as I then knew where South was.

I never went up in the Towers although there was a subway stop I used to get off of occasionally that was in the basement of one of them, so I had been inside on numerous occasions.

I used to run with a group of street skaters (real skates, before roller blades, not skate boards). If occasionally we would find ourselves in the neighborhood we would go into the Plaza at the base of the Towers and take a few turns around. We couldn’t hang out there because a security guard would invariably come out and chase us away and we weren’t looking for trouble but we could always get in a few minutes.

Point of the above was that I did have a personal relationship to the buildings so when they went down it was meaningful to me. Any visit to NYC after that the sky seemed empty.

My first visit to NYC after 9/11 was a few months later. I had been recently diagnosed with Hepatitis C and the then currently available treatment was nasty, being basically having the flu for one year with a 10% chance of going undetectable.

I didn’t care for that so I studied what novel medications were in the experimental pipeline and referred myself into a study that was being conducted in NYC so it required me to travel there. This meant a series of trips in later November/December into the city. (After going through all the preliminaries, the study got scrubbed because a monkey went blind so I never did take the medicine).

At that time no one knew but what another attack could happen at any time, so being in NYC as a resident or visitor did provide a heightened sense of of one’s mortality.

I made the obligatory trip to the Ground Zero and that was a whole experience. I was pretty numb through most of it as the vibe in the area was incredible and turning down receptors was the only way to make it through.

While that visit itself could be a whole chapter in the book I will never write, one thing did strike me pretty hard.

That was within a block of the viewing platform all the visitors took turns walking up to look down into the hole there was a bicycle U locked to a street sign. It was still grey with dust the rains hadn’t washed off yet.

Someone had locked up their bicycle and gone into a building, never to return to unlock it, becoming one of the casualties of that day.

To me that was the spirit of New Yorkers, that that bike had been allowed to stay there. Not stolen or removed as abandoned but a mute and understated memorial to the sheer personal tragedy of the day. All around the buildings and streets had been cleaned and washed up except for that bike, left to the rain.

That bike affected me more than anything else. I can still see it — waiting, waiting, waiting, for a rider who will never return.

Black and White Assessment

Miami, Florida

I was a coward today for not walking (as the heat was so intimidating). I was a hero for rising early despite fatigue after resting late. I was a coward for not asking if two visiting senior god-sisters were being well tended to. I was a hero for giving class from the Bhagavatam for a second day in a row. I was a coward for eating slightly more than needed. I was a hero for flying back home on the eve of 9-11's 10th anniversary. I was a coward for not pulling out a weed in the temple garden although I passed by there several times. I was a hero for extolling the glories of an heroic king Prthu who was part of our discussion in the Bhagavatam class. I was a coward for not thanking sufficiently those who cooked and served my meal. I was a hero for taking four showers today and keeping at least externally clean. I was a coward for not being attentive enough to my mantra chanting. I was a hero for being the time keeper to a meeting. I was a coward for using a word too harsh or extreme in accusing someone. I was a hero for serving cool papaya juice to two senior god-sisters. I was a coward for boasting about it.

9-11 After Thoughts

Toronto, Ontario

At the First Unitarian Church on St. Claire Ave. I was amongst a group of panelists. There were reps from Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Unitarianism, while I represented Hinduism. The coordinator for this event which endorsed peace over terrorism was J.W. Windland in the memory of the 9-11 attack of ten years ago. The thrust of our two sessions of five minute talks was spirituality presiding over the absolutist stance. At least 'in spirit', the mood was to challenge absolutism as the killer of peace.

It was interesting for me to hear the various groups speak of their history of struggle and how each strived for their own peace while also admitting to the barriers that their own traditions have to contend with to break the barriers they encounter.

The speakers were good. I felt humbled being in their midst. At my turn to respond the unique obligation on how to break barriers, I suggested as our guru, Srila Prabhupada did, to organize a sharing of the names of God. I expressed that one of my summer highlights of this year was attending an interfaith group session where we participated in each others songs, hymns, incantations, mantras, what have you. The event was highly successful. In my attempt to echo the message of the Vedas I tried to emphasize the point that our true identity is as one of the soul. I am not Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, etc. "I am a spirit."

From the symposium of peace, I ventured to the Vegetarian Food Fair where multiple meals of prasadam (food of peace) was being sold by Krishna devotees in amongst other promoters of violence-free food. From there I walked a good one in the Yorkvill district. I met Larry who was strumming on his guitar singing a Beatles tune, "I am the Walrus." As I walked by before making his acquaintance, I heard him sing those lyrics and in my mind I though, "No, you are not a walrus, but a spirit, a spark of life and servant of the Supreme."

The Beach and Birds

Miami, Florida

Hurricane Irene did little damage to Miami. One local person here told me that some forceful winds did cause ocean currents to stir up things leaving jellyfish, for instance, to be floating near the shore or to be banked on the beach.

Jiva Goswami Das, Krishna member, drove me to Biscayne Park where you have a beach. Our ten kilometre trek along the water was invigorating. It was a barefoot hike. It was dark, 9:30 PM, and naturally we were cautious about where we were stepping. I would make this venture analogous to stepping in the material world and being extremely careful about where you tread.

I have to be humoured about the name, 'Miami', because if you sound it out it's all about maya (in Sanskrit means illusion), and me. Maya me. And as everyone knows it is a place which offers much sense enjoyment. Tourists come here form all over the world to the beach and the bars; people retire here to settle as refugees. Miami is a very sought after place.

Fortunately there is some presence of spiritual practice in this big place of maya. I see churches, synagogues, yoga centres and other such facilities. And, of course, there is the ocean itself which provides a great venue for spiritual upliftment. Because we are in the Kali yuga, the age of dullness, you do find that bars, gambling, gross restaurants and sex joints far outnumber the spiritual assemblies.

As Jiva and I moved along with a calm ocean to one side and a beach to the other, we noticed birds ahead of us set like sages in meditation. "Cacatuas" was the Spanish word he gave to these feathery guys. They appeared as if to be in samadhi (transfixed or absorbed), but it was food for sure. Perhaps a future life will find them in Absolute awareness.

We chanted our mantras audibly enough in order that these birds could hear and would have a better chance at spiritual projection in the future. Anything to liberate the soul.

Another Trek

Toronto, Ontario

Yes, it's confirmed for September 15th. I'll be embarking on a fourth trek. There are new roads I haven't yet touched, and towns I haven't seen. The contents to a hand out I'll be giving to fellow travelers is below.

Dear Friend,

I have a confession to make. I'm an addict - a walking addict!

It will be my fourth time walking across Canada ~~ done selfishly for my health and also to encourage the notion of pilgrimage. That's the type of thing monks do - go on long treks for inspiration and that's exactly how I feel when I walk, in fact, it gets better each time.

I hope you'll join me for a short stretch. Don't worry, I'm a nice guy. I'm a vegetarian. I don't bite, unless, of course, you are just vegetating! Frankly, with this passion - walking in this great country in the world I hope to encourage mobility and action. I also hope to encourage people to experience a more car-free, care-free life. We often find ourselves cooped up in boxes, whether it is a house, an office or a car. A break would be nice. In some places on our planet there exists a passion for reflective walking, either solo or in groups, such as the famous Santiago de Compostela in Europe. I was thinking that maybe we could have something like that in the land of maple trees.

This is the one thing missing in our society, as I see it. We've got everything else in some kind of order - work, education, recreation, etc. - but what about pilgrimage or self-discovery?

By the way, you do know who you really are? I'm not asking for a name, species, gender, or your career identity. Walking some distance allows you to probe more deeply inside, to get to know yourself better.

This trekking can be most helpful in an age of identity crisis and stress, when communication is efficient, but not always effective; when relationships are intensely sought after but, unfortunately often times fall flat. I'm just trying to be straightforward about this, like the straight and narrow path we are encouraged to travel on. My firm belief that if every person in the world just give one hour to trekking, we would see a different place. I believe in "more walking and less squawking ".

Again, I hope you can take a few minutes where we can walk and talk, but if not, please feel free to visit my website and consider me your friend. www.thewalkingmonk.org

Sincerely,

Bhaktimarga Swami
(The Walking Monk)
