Australian News: Book Review: The Beat of Different Drums – A brief auto-biography of Jayadeva das PrabhuThe beat of different drums A brief auto-biography of Jayadeva das Prabhu By Patita Pavana das Adhikary I define a good day as one when I have had the pleasure of reading a good book. And by that definition, today was a very good day because I was curled up with Jayadeva das' The Beat of Different Drums. And I say emphatically that this was one of the very best books that I have ever read. But first, you ask, what makes a good book? As Shrila Prabhupada points out, "Lord Chaitanya ordered His disciples to write books on the science of Krishna consciousness, a process that those who follow Him carry out to the present day." And the auto-biography of John Richardson, who devotees know and love as Jayadeva Prabhu, fits that qualification nicely. His soon-to-be-released bio is not only well-written and saturated with humor and adventure but it brims with a subtle undercurrent of Lord Krishna's Divine Hand at work on each page. By the grace of Shrila Prabhupada and the spiritual master who initiated Jayadeva and his family, HH Shivarama Swami, I can declare that no book quite like this one has ever been written before. Hare Krishna, Guru Maharaja, Why does ISKCON accept Krishna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead? What is the position of the devatas and avatars? Your servant, R.K. Answer: Vedas and Great Sages Confirm This ISKCON accepts Krishna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead because this is the ultimate conclusion of the Vedic literatures and all the great acharyas. And this is confirmed by Sri Arjuna as follows in the Bhagavad-gita: arjuna uvca param brahma param dhma pavitram paramam bhavn purusam vatam divyam di-devam ajam vibhum hus tvm rsayah sarve devarsir nradas tath asito devalo vysah svayam caiva bravsi me Arjuna said: You are the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the ultimate abode, the purest, the Absolute Truth. You are the eternal, transcendental, original person, the unborn, the greatest. All the great sages such as Narada, Asita, Devala and Vyasa confirm this truth about You, and now You Yourself are declaring it to me. ---Bhagavad-gita 10.12-13 The devatas or demigods are the various controllers of the universal affairs such as the wind and the rain. They are servants of the Supreme Lord. They are not the Supreme Lord. The different avatars such as Lord Rama and Lord Nrsimhadeva are Krishna Himself manifesting in different pastimes for the pleasure and protection of His devotees. Who is the worshipable Deity for this Ekadasi, and what merit does one attain in observing it? Kindly reveal all of this to me my Lord." The Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Sri Krishna addressed His devoted Yudhishthira as follows, "This Ekadasi, Oh Yudhishthira, is called Vamana Ekadasi, and it bestows upon those who observe it both great merit and ultimate liberation from material bondage. Therefore, because it removes all one's sinful reactions, it is also called Jayanti Ekadasi. Just hearing of its glories frees one from all his past misdeeds. So auspicious is this fast that observing it bestows the same merit as that earned by performing a horse sacrifice. There is no better Ekadasi than this, because it awards liberation so easily. Thus if one truly desires freedom from the punishing material world, one should fast on Vamana Ekadasi. "While observing this holy fast, a Vaishnava should lovingly worship the Supreme Lord in His form as Vamandev, the dwarf incarnation, whose eyes are like lotus petals. By doing so, he worships all other Deities as well, including Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, and at death he undoubtedly goes to that abode of Sri Hari. In all the three worlds there is no fast that is more important to observe. The reason this Ekadasi is so auspicious is that it celebrates the day when the sleeping Lord Vishnu turns over on His other side; thus it is also known as Parivartinii Ekadasi." Maharaja Yudhishthira then asked of the Lord, "Oh Janardana, please clear up a question I have. How is it that the Supreme Lord sleeps and then turns over on His side? Oh Lord, when You are asleep what happens to all the other living entities? Please also tell me how You bound the king of the demons, Bali Daityaraj (Bali Maharaja), as well as how one may please the brahmanas. How does one observe Chaturmasya, which You mention in the Chaturmasya-mahatmya of the Bhavishya Purana? Kindly be merciful to me and answer these questions." The Supreme Personality of Godhead Sri Krishna replied, "Oh Yudhishthira, lion among Kings, I will gladly narrate to you an historical event that, simply by hearing, eradicates all one's sinful reactions. "In the TretA-yuga there once was a king of the name Bali. Though born in a family dynasty of demons (daityas), he was very devoted to Me. He sang many Vedic hymns to Me and performed the homa rituals (fire sacrifices) just to satisfy Me. He respected the twice-born brahmins and engaged them in performing sacrifices daily. This great soul had a quarrel with Indra, however, and eventually defeated him in battle. Bali took over his entire celestial kingdom, which I Myself had given to Indra. Therefore Indra and all the other devas (demigods), along with many great sages, approached Me and complained about Bali Maharaja. Bowing their heads to the ground and offering many sacred prayers from the Vedas, they worshipped Me along with their spiritual master, Brihaspati. Thus I agreed to appear on their behalf as a dwarf Vamanadev, My fifth incarnation." King Yudhishthira further enquired, "Oh Lord, how was it possible for You to conquer such a powerful demon, and only by coming in the form of a dwarf brahmin? Please explain this clearly, for I am Your faithful devotee." The Supreme Lord, Sri Krishna replied, "Though a dwarf, I was a brahmana, and I approached that pious king Bali to ask him for alms in the form of land. I said, 'Oh Daityraj Bali, please give Me just three steps of land in charity. Such a small piece of land will be good as all the three worlds for Me.' Bali agreed to grant My request without lengthy consideration. But as soon as he vowed to give Me the land, My body began to expand into a gigantic transcendental form. I covered the entire Earth with My feet, all the Bhuvarloka with My thighs, the Swarga heavens with My waist, Maharloka with My stomach, Janaloka with My chest, Tapoloka with My neck, and Satyaloka with My head and face. I covered the entire material creation. Indeed, all the planets of the universe, including the Sun and the Moon, were encompassed by My gigantic form." "Seeing this astonishing pastime of Mine, all the demigods, including Indra and Shesha, the king of the snakes, began to sing Vedic hymns and offer prayers to Me. Then I took Bali by the hand and said to him, 'Oh sinless one, I have covered the whole Earth with one step and all the heavenly planets with the second. Now where shall I place My foot to measure the third step of land you promised Me?' "Upon hearing this, Bali Maharaja bowed down in humility and offered Me his head to place My third step. Oh Yudhishthira, I placed My foot on his head and sent him all the way to Patalaloka. Seeing him thus humbled, I became very pleased and told Bali that henceforth I would permanently reside in his palace. Thereafter, on Parivartinii Ekadasi, which occurs during the light part of the month of Bhadra (August-September), Bali, the son of Virochana, grandson of Prahlad, installed a Deity form of Me in his residence. "Oh king, until Haribodhini Ekadasi, which occurs during the light part of the month of Kartika, I continue to sleep in the ocean of milk. The merit one accumulates during this period is particularly powerful. One should therefore observe Parivartini Ekadasi carefully. Indeed, it is especially purifying and thus cleanses one of all sinful reactions. On this day the faithful devotee should worship Lord Trivikrama, Vamanadeva, who is the supreme father, because on this day I turn over to sleep on My other side. "If possible, on this day one should give a qualified person some yogurt mixed with rice, as well as some silver, and then remain awake throughout the night. This simple observance will free one of all material conditioning. One who observes this sacred Parivartinii Ekadasi in the way I have described will surely attain all kinds of happiness in this world and the kingdom of God in the hereafter. One who simply hears this narration with devotion will go to the abode of the demigods and shine there like the Moon itself, so powerful is observance of this Ekadasi. Indeed, this observance is as powerful as the performance of a thousand horse sacrifices." Thus ends the narration of the glories of Parivartini Ekadasi, or Vamana Ekadasi, which occurs during the light part of the month of Bhadrapada, from the Brahma-vaivarta Pura • Email to a friend • • Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Jaya Hrishikesha...Honouring Ekadasi including Annada Ekadasi from a fortnight ago...Today is Ekadasi. It is actually Parsva Ekadasi. However before posting the glories of today's ekasasi, we want to post the glories of Annada ekadasi which took place a fortnight ago. During that week we did not have time to post however to "catch up" and maintain the archive of all the ekadasis that come up during the year, we still wanted to honour Annada Ekadasi by posting the glories of this particular ekadasi... Sri Yudhisthira Maharaja said, "Oh Janardana, protector of all living entities, please tell me the name of the Ekadasi that occurs during the dark fortnight of the month of Bhadrapada (August-September)." The Supreme Lord, Sri Krishna, then replied, "Oh King, hear Me attentively. The name of this sin-removing, sacred Ekadasi is Aja. Any person who fasts completely on this day and worships Hrishikesha, the master of the senses, becomes free of all reactions to his sins. Even one who simply hears about this Ekadasi is freed from his past sins. Oh King, there is no better day than this in all the earthly and heavenly worlds. This is true without a doubt. "There once lived a famous king named Harishchandra, who was the emperor of the world and a person of great truth and integrity. His wife's name was Chandramati, and he had a son named Lohitashva. By the force of destiny, however, Harishchandra lost his great kingdom and sold his wife and son. The pious king himself became a menial servant of a dog-eater, who made him guard a crematorium. Yet even while doing such menial service, he did not forsake his truthfulness and good character, just as soma-rasa, even when mixed with some other liquid, does not lose its ability to bestow immortality. "The king passed many years in this condition. Then one day he sadly thought, 'What shall I do? Where shall I go? How can I be delivered from this plight?' In this way he drowned in an ocean of anxiety and sorrow. "One day a great sage happened by, and when the king saw him he happily thought, 'Ah, Lord Brahma has created brahmins just to help others.' Harishchandra paid his respectful obeisances to the sage, whose name was Gautama Muni. With joined palms the king stood before Gautama Muni and narrated his pitiful story. Gautama Muni was astonished to hear the king's tale of woe. He thought, 'How has this mighty king been reduced to collecting clothes from the dead?' Gautama Muni became very much compassionate toward Harishchandra and instructed him on the process of fasting for purification. "Gautama Muni said, 'Oh king, during the dark fortnight of the month of Bhadrapada there occurs an especially meritorious Ekadasi named Aja (Annada), which removes all sins. Indeed, this Ekadasi is so auspicious that if you simply fast on that day and perform no other austerity, all your sins will be nullified. By your good fortune it is coming in just seven days. So I urge you to fast on this day and remain awake through the night. If you do so, all the reactions of your past sins will come to an end. Oh Harishchandra, I have come here because of your past pious deeds. Now, all good fortune to you in the future!' So saying, the great sage Sri Gautama Muni immediately disappeared from his vision. "King Harishchandra followed Gautama Muni's instructions concerning fasting on the sacred day of Aja Ekadasi. Oh Maharaja Yudhisthira, because the king fasted on that day, the reactions to his previous sins were completely destroyed at once. Oh lion among kings, just see the influence of this Ekadasi fast! It immediately vanquishes whatever miseries one may be suffering as a result of past karmic sinful activities. Thus all Harishchandra's miseries were relieved. Just by the power of this wonderful Ekadasi, he was reunited with his wife and son, who had died but were now revived. In the heavenly regions the devas began beating on their celestial kettledrums and showering down flowers upon Harishchandra, his queen, and their son. By the blessings of the Ekadasi fast, he regained his kingdom without difficulty. Moreover, when King Harishchandra left the planet, his relatives and all his subjects too, went with him to the spiritual world. "Oh Pandava, whoever fasts on Aja Ekadasi is surely freed from all his sins and ascends to the spiritual world. And whosoever hears and studies the glories of this Ekadasi achieves the merit gained by performing a horse sacrifice." Thus ends the narration of the glories of Bhadrapada-krishna Ekadasi, or Aja Ekadasi, from the Brahma-vaivarta Purana. • Email to a friend • • Bharatavarsa.net: Book distribution seminar: Re: PaulHaribol, Prabhus, Please accept my humble obeisances. Uploaded from Sofia, Bulgaria Do you know who you are? Do you consider yourself to belong to a certain gender, race, nationality, or age bracket? If you do, you are grossly mistaken. You have nothing to do with any of these identities because you are not your material body. You are instead an eternal spiritual being, who is constitutionally a servant of Krishna or God. If you want factual permanent happiness, you must solidly resituate yourself in your original, natural consciousness. This enlightened state is known as Krishna consciousness, and can also be designated as Christ consciousness, Jehovah consciousness, or Allah consciousness. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Revealing the Real Self--Sofia, Bulgaria 5 September 2011 http://www.backtohome.com/images/2011-Fall/Revealing_Real_Self.JPG Answers by Citing the Vedic Version: Objection: We Cannot Concentrate on a Formless God From what I understand from the scriptures, meditation is not concentration, but we call it de-concentration because scriptures say we meditate by saying neti neti (not this not that). God is not a thing whereupon we can concentrate. When we solve a problem, we can concentrate because our intellect has the ability to capture a problem. Intellect does not have capability to capture God. Therefore when we take our mind from other things we get a glimpse of God. In bhakti, the path of devotion, we try to remember Lord Krishna or pray to Lord Krishna to give us His glimpse. We don't concentrate here as well. Please correct my understanding. Narendra B. Answer: Don't Throw Away the Baby with the Bathwater The neti neti meditation, which literally means, not this, not that is for clearing away all the material obstacles so that one can concentrate his mind in a state of pure transcendental meditation on the form of God, the Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Sri Krishna. Neti neti is not meant to negate God's form, which is the very object of our meditation. It is simply meant to clear away all the material obstacles. Just as the mother who bathes her baby does not throw the baby away with the bath water, we should be careful not to negate the transcendental form of God when we go through the cleansing process of negating our attachment to the material forms, which are the very cause of our bondage in the cycle of birth and death. According to the impersonal conception of God, meditation is de-concentration because if God is formless, meditation must mean to completely detach the mind from all forms. In other words, according to the impersonal conception there is nothing ultimately existing upon which to fix or concentrate the mind. Therefore, for the impersonalists meditation is a de-fixing or de-concentrating of the mind. Your idea of de-concentration makes perfect sense as long as we assume an impersonal, formless God. But this impersonal, formless conception of God is not scientifically valid, either from the viewpoint of logic, Vedic science, or modern day empirical science. When the Vedas describe the Supreme as formless this means that God has no material form. This does not mean that He has no spiritual form. It is confirmed in the Brahma-samhita that Krishna has eternal form composed of eternity, knowledge, and bliss: varah paramah krsnah sac-cid-nanda-vigrahah andir dir govindah sarva-krana-kranam Krishna who is known as Govinda is the Supreme Godhead. He has an eternal blissful spiritual form. He is the origin of all. He has no other origin and He is the prime cause of all causes. --Brahma-samhita 5.1 From the standpoint of empirical science there has never been a scientific experiment to prove that form can be generated from nothingness or formlessness. And from the standpoint of logic if everything is ultimately one impersonal formless lump, we do not even exist to be engaged in the act of meditation. It is directly instructed in the Bhagavad-gita that we should concentrate our minds on the person Krishna as stated here: man-man bhava mad-bhakto mad-yj mm namaskuru mm evaisyasi yuktvaivam tmnam mat-paryanah Engage your mind always in concentrating on Me, become My devotee, offer obeisances to Me and worship Me. Being completely absorbed in Me, surely you will come to Me. --Bhagavad-gita 9.34 While it is true that we cannot capture Krishna or God with our intellect, we can capture Him with a loving heart. He is actually very eagerly waiting for us to capture Him by our love, just as Mother Yasoda captured Him by her love. If you truly love someone, you will always think of them 24 hours a day. The more you think of them, the more your love will grow. So please always concentrate your mind on Krishna in transcendental loving meditation 24 hours a day, and you will capture Him. In a mood of humble service to you, I was forced to point out your mistaken understanding on this point to clear away all the obstacles on your path way of spiritual realization. I hope you understand and can appreciate my humble attempt to correct and enlighten you. Srimad Bhagavatam is also called the Bhagavata Purana. It contains the essence of the Ancient Vedic Histories known as the Puranas – the transcendental pastimes of Lord Krishna and His saintly devotees. Mundane histories describe personalities caught in the grip of birth, death, disease and old age. As Nietsche so cynically said, ‘History is for those who dwell in the graveyards’. Prabhupada described mundane narrations as fit for crows. I have seen crows in India and they are very fond of garbage. The Vedas consider the pastimes of Krishna, however, to be amrita – immortal nectar. These descriptions are for swanlike persons and are full of sac-cid-ananda – eternity, knowledge and bliss. Srila Vyasadeva – the compiler of the Vedas, including Srimad Bhagavatam- calls the Srimad Bhagavatam ‘The ripened fruit of the desire tree of Vedic knowledge’. The Bhagavad-gita is called the ‘Jewel of the Vedas’. Also known as Gitopanisad, an extension of the Vedic teachings called Upanisads, Bhagavad-gita is the oldest book on the planet – dating some 5,000 years. It is the sacred conversation or song between the saintly prince Arjuna and Lord Krishna. The Gita is a perfect summary of the entire Vedic Canon of knowledge. His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada writes, ‘Bhagavad-gita accepted as it is, is a great boon for humanity; but if it is accepted as a treatise of mental speculations, it is simply a waste of time’. Essentially, Bhagavad Gita As It Is means as it is understood in disciplic succession ie. via a lineage of qualified teachers. Srila Prabhupada has presented the world with wonderful translations of the Srimad Bhagavatam and Bhagavad-gita. Even more importantly, he has explained to the public at large the true spirit of these scriptures through his authoritative commentaries or purports. Filed under: A.C. Friday 29th, July 2011.
Nitai and I woke up early in the morning. We made some attempts to book a car for Berlin through the tour devotees but soon found that we had to catch the train. I had mapped out the way the day before but Nitai decided he would lead us down some crazy shortcut, putting me in anxiety until we finally reached the station. The lady at the reception only spoke Polish but wasn't willing to sell us a ticket. We jumped on the train and the conductor only spoke in German. Although I knew no German whatsoever, by guidance of the Supersoul I still managed to know exactly what he was trying to tell us, thus we purchased the right tickets.
The trip was exceptionally smooth. We arrived at the airport moments before Bhisma and Anukula came out of the gate. It felt very special, not having seen them since my goodbye dinner over a year before. We were soon making our way back to Kostrzyn, because it was too rainy to spend time in Berlin.
We somehow missed the crucial change over point and found ourselves stranded in one station for an hour until the next train rocked in. We were trying to figure out how we all managed to be distracted at the exact same crucial point but we decided to take it as Krsna's arrangement.
We soon found Chitti and Prtha in the station, waiting for a train into Berlin. They were heading off for a short vacation before Woodstock. It was an interesting arrangement indeed. Soon, in the midst of our conversations, one person came up and said "haribol". He showed me a photo of someone who he was looking for. He had been waiting for them but they hadn't arrived yet. I recognized the person he was looking for; a devotee from the Polish tour. I suggested to this newly met stranger that I would pass on the message for him when I returned to Poland.
It seemed Krsna served multiple purposes with us when He decided to stop our train. We spent the hour in good conversation before we rushed back to catch the train out. The train to Kostrzyn was already packed with heaps of youngsters on their early journey to Woodstock.
We returned just on lunch time so we had a great big lunch with all our crew from the tour. The four Durr boys were finally reunited, along with the addition of Anukula (aka the Fifth Element). The brothers soon disappeared back into our room for some bonding. HH Indradyumna Swami arrived and was checking on all the rooms. He popped his head into ours. I quickly paid obeisances and then asked to catch a lift back to Green School with him. I had to pack all my things in ten minutes and be out the door waiting, whilst managing to introduce Bhisma and Anukula to Maharaja before we left.
I was moving into the gymnasium, where I had stayed last year but Amrtananda Prabhu (HH Indradyumna Swami's driver and servant) suggested a room for me to stay in, separate from the mass of other devotees. I found myself in a room with Dina Dayal Prabhu and a few other Ukrainian friends from tour. It was a combination of material and spiritual pleasure.
I slipped outside to check my emails with Gaura Mohana, attempting to head back in when the rain started falling. As we tried to open the doors to the school, we realized that we were locked outside. I took note of the usual curfew so that this silly mix-up didn't happen again, but was nonetheless pleased when a devotee came and unlocked the door for us. We slipped into bed, early for a change, in preparation for the upcoming Woodstock festival. The day was jam packed with blessings and I could see how Krsna was personally running each and every one of our lives, simply for our benefits.
