PADMA EKADASI
from the Bhavishya-uttara Purana.

Also known as Sayana Ekadasi and Ashada-shukla Ekadasi, Padma Ekadasi is the Ekadasi that occurs during the light fortnight of the month of Ashadha (June – July) 

Lord Sri Krishna is narrating the following history to Yudhisthira Maharaja (this history was originally described by Lord Brahma to his son, the sage Narada Muni: 

Lord Brahma said, ‘There is nothing better than Ekadasi, the day of Lord Sri Hari, in this or any other world. It nullifies even the worst sins if observed properly. 

Fasting on this Ekadasi purifies one of all sins and fulfills all ones desires. Therefore, whoever neglects to observe this sacred fast day is a good candidate for entering into hell. Just to please the Supreme Lord Hrishikesha, the master of the senses, one should fast on this day. Just hearing this account destroys all kinds of sins, along with all obstacles on the path to spiritual perfection.

There was once a saintly king in the Surya Vamsha (Sun dynasty) whose name was Mandhata. Because he always stood up for the truth, he was appointed emperor. He took care of his subjects as though they were his very own family members and children. On account of his piety and great religiosity, there was no pestilence, drought, or disease of any kind in his entire kingdom. All his subjects were not only free of all kinds of disturbances but also were very wealthy. The king’s own treasury was free of any ill-gotten moneys, and thus he ruled happily for many years.

Once, however, because of some sin in his kingdom, there was a drought for three years. The subjects found themselves beset by famine also. The lack of food grains made it impossible for them to perform the prescribed Vedic sacrifices, offer oblations of grita (ghee) to their forefathers and to the devas, engage in any ritualistic worship, or even study the Vedic literatures. Finally, they all came before their beloved king in a great assembly and addressed him thus, "Oh king, you always see to our welfare, so we humbly beg your assistance now. Everyone and everything in this world needs water. Without water, almost everything is rendered useless or dead. The Vedas call water nara, and because the Supreme Personality of Godhead sleeps upon water, His another name is Narayana. God makes His own abode on water and takes His rest there.

In His form as the clouds, the Supreme Lord is present throughout the sky and pours forth rains, from which grow the grains that maintain every living entity.

Oh king, the severe drought has caused a great lack of valuable grains; thus we are all miserable, and the population is decreasing as people die off or leave your kingdom. Oh best ruler on Earth, please find some solutions to this problem and bring us to peace and prosperity once again."

The king replied, "You speak the truth, for grains are like Brahman, the Absolute Truth, who lives within grains and thereby sustains all beings. Indeed, it is because of grains that the entire world lives. Now, why is there a terrible drought in our kingdom? The Holy Scriptures discuss this subject very thoroughly. If a king (or head of the country) is irreligious, both he and his subjects suffer. I have meditated upon the cause of our problem for a long time, but after searching my past and present character I can honestly say that I find no sin. Still, for the good of all your subjects, I shall try to remedy the situation."

Thinking in this way, King Mandhata assembled his army and entourage and then entered the forest. He wandered here and there, seeking great sages in their Ashrams and inquiring about how to resolve the crisis in his kingdom. At last he came upon the ashram of Angira Muni, whose effulgence lit up all directions. Seated in his hermitage, Angira looked like a second Brahma. King Mandhata was very pleased to see that exalted sages, whose senses were completely under control.

The king immediately dismounted his horse and offered his respectful obeisances at the lotus feet of Angira Muni. Then the king joined his palms and prayed for the Muni’s blessings. That saintly person reciprocated by blessing the king with sacred mantras; then he asked him about the welfare of the seven limbs of his kingdom. 

After telling the sage how the seven limbs of his kingdom were situated, King Mandhata asked the sage about his own situation, and if he was happy. Then Angira Muni asked the king why he had undertaken such a difficult journey into the forest, and the king told him of the affliction his kingdom was suffering. 

Angira Rishi said to the king, "The present age, Satya yuga, is the best of all ages, for in this age Dharma stands on all four legs.
In this age everyone respects Brahmins as the topmost members of society. Also, everyone fulfills his occupational duties, and only twice-born Brahmins are allowed to perform Vedic austerities and penances. Although this is a standard, Oh lion among kings, there is one shudra (uninitiated, untrained person) who is thus unlawfully performing the rites of austerity and penance in your kingdom. This is why there is no rain in your land. You should therefore punish this labourer with death, for by so doing you will remove the contamination inflicted by his actions and restore peace to your subjects."

The king then replied, "How can I kill an offenseless performer of austerity and sacrifice? Please give me some spiritual solution."

The great sage Angira Muni then said, "Oh king, then you should observe a fast on the Ekadasi that occurs during the light fortnight of the month of Ashadha. This auspicious day is named Padma Ekadasi, and by its influence plentiful rains and thus grains and other foodstuffs will surely return to your kingdom. This Ekadasi bestows perfection upon its faithful observers, removes all kinds of bad elements, and destroys all obstacles on the path to perfection. Oh king, you, your relatives, and your subjects should all observe this sacred Ekadasi fast. Then everything in your kingdom will undoubtedly return to normal."

Upon hearing these words, the king offered his obeisances and then returned to his palace. When the Padma Ekadasi arrived, King Mandhata assembled all the Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras in his kingdom and instructed them to strictly observe this important fast day. After they had observed it, the rains fell, just as the sage had predicted, and in due course of time there were abundant crops and a rich harvest of grain. By the mercy of the Supreme Lord Hrishikesha, the master of the senses, all the subjects of King Mandhata became extremely happy and prosperous.


Lord Brahma said, "Therefore, Oh Narada, everyone should observe this Ekadasi fast very strictly, for it bestows all kinds of happiness, as well as ultimate liberation, upon the faithful devotee."


Then Lord Sri Krishna concluded his narration, "My dear Yudhishthira, Padma Ekadasi is so powerful that one who simply reads or hears its glories becomes completely sinless. Oh Pandava, one who wishes to please Me should strictly observe this Ekadasi. Oh lion among kings, Yudhishthira Maharaj, whoever wants liberation should regularly observe a fast on this Ekadasi which is also the day when the Chaturmasya fast begins.”

El Señor Sri Krishna cuenta la siguiente historia a Yudhisthira Maharajá (esta historia fue originalmente descrita por el Señor Brahma a su hijo, el sabio Narada Muni:

Señor Brahma dijo, ' no hay nada mejor que el Ekadasi, el día del Señor Sri Hari, en este o en cualquier otro mundo. Incluso los peores pecados se anulan si se observa correctamente.

El Ayuno en este Ekadasi lo purifica a uno de todos los pecados y cumple todos los deseos. Por lo tanto, quien descuida en festejar este día sagrado de ayuno es un buen candidato para entrar en el infierno. Sólo por complacer al Señor Supremo Hrishikesha, el maestro de los sentidos, uno debe ayunar en este día. Escuchar sólo esta narración destruye todo tipo de pecados, junto con todos los obstáculos en el camino a la perfección espiritual.

Había una vez un rey Santo en el Surya Vamsha (dinastía solar) cuyo nombre era Mandhata. Porque él siempre defendía a la verdad, fue nombrado emperador. Él se hizo cargo de sus súbditos como si fueran sus propios familiares y niños. Debido a su piedad y su gran religiosidad, no hubo ninguna pestilencia, sequía o enfermedad de cualquier tipo en todo el Reino. Todos sus ciudadanos estaban no sólo libre de todo tipo de perturbaciones, sino que también eran muy ricos. El tesoro del rey estaba libre de cualquier dinero mal adquirido, y así felizmente gobernó durante muchos años.

Una vez, sin embargo, debido a algún pecado en su Reino, hubo una sequía de tres años. Los sujetos se encuentran acosados por el hambre también. La falta de cereales hizo imposible para ellos de realizar los sacrificios Védicos prescritos, ofrecen limosmas de grita (ghee) a sus antepasados y a los devas, participar en cualquier culto ritualista, o incluso estudiar la literatura Védica. Finalmente, todos ellos llegaron antes de que su amado rey en una gran Asamblea y se dirigió a él así, "Oh rey, que siempre velas por nuestro bienestar, por lo que rogamos humildemente su ayuda ahora. Todos y todo en este mundo necesita agua. Sin agua, casi todo resulta inútil o muertos. La palabra para agua en los Vedas es "nara", y porque la  Suprema Personalidad de Dios duerme sobre el agua, su otro nombre es Narayana. Dios hacen su propia morada en el agua y toma su descanso allí.

En su forma como las nubes, el Señor Supremo está presente en todo el cielo y derrama abundante lluvias, de la cual crecen los granos que mantienen a cada entidad viva.

Oh rey, la sequía ha causado una gran falta de valiosos granos; así somos todos los miserables, y la población está disminuyendo porque las personas mueren de sed o abandonan su Reino. Oh el mejor de los gobernantes en la tierra, por favor, encuentra algunas soluciones a este problema para que nos llegue la paz y la prosperidad una vez más."

El rey respondió: "usted dice la verdad, porque los granos son como Brahman, la verdad absoluta, que vive dentro de los granos y sostiene a todos los seres. De hecho, es a causa de los granos que vive todo el mundo. Ahora, ¿por qué hay una terrible sequía en nuestro Reino? Las Sagradas Escrituras debaten este tema muy bien. Si un rey (o la cabeza del país) es irreligiosos, sufriran tanto él como sus súbditos. Yo he meditado sobre la causa de nuestro problema durante mucho tiempo, pero después de buscar en mi carácter de pasado y presente puedo decir honestamente que no encuentro ningún pecado. Aún así, para el bien de todos los subditos, voy a intentar remediar la situación."

Pensando en esta forma, rey Mandhata reunió su ejército y su séquito y luego entró en el bosque. Deambuló aquí y allá, buscando los grandes sabios en sus Ashrams y preguntando acerca de cómo resolver la crisis en su Reino. Por fin llegó al ashram de Angira Muni, cuyo fulgor ilumina todas las direcciones. Sentado en su ermita, Angira parecía un segundo Brahma. Rey Mandhata se alegró de ver a los sabios exaltados, cuyos sentidos estaban completamente bajo control.

El rey inmediatamente desmontó de su caballo y ofreció sus respetuosas reverencias a los pies de loto de Angira Muni. Entonces el rey unió sus manos y oró por las bendiciones del Muni. Esa persona Santa en reciprocidad por la bendición del rey con mantras sagrados; luego le preguntó sobre el bienestar de los siete miembros de su Reino.

Después de decirle al sabio cómo estaban situadas las siete ramas de su Reino, el rey Mandhata preguntó al sabio acerca de su propia situación y si era feliz. Angira Muni preguntó entonces al rey por qué había realizado un difícil camino por el bosque, y el rey le dijo de la aflicción que su reino estaba sufriendo.

Angira Rishi dijo al rey, "la edad actual, Satya yuga, es la mejor de todas las edades, porque en esta edad Dharma se alza sobre las cuatro patas.


En esta edad todo el mundo respeta a los brahmanes como miembros de la sociedad superior. También, todo el mundo cumple con sus deberes prescritos, y sólo los dos veces nacido o brahmanes pueden realizar penitencias y austeridades Védicas. Aunque se trata de una norma, Oh León entre los Reyes, hay una Shudrá (persona no iniciada, sin entrenamiento) que por lo tanto está realizando ilegalmente los ritos de austeridad y penitencia en tu Reino. Esto es por qué no hay ninguna lluvia en tu tierra. Se debe por lo tanto sancionar este obrero con la muerte, para que así le quitará la contaminación causada por su acciones y restaurar la paz a sus súbditos."

El rey respondió entonces: "¿Cómo puedo yo matar a un ejecutante sin ofensa que realiza austeridad y sacrificio? Por favor deme alguna solución espiritual."

El gran sabio Angira Muni entonces dijo: "Oh rey, entonces usted debe observar un ayuno en el Ekadasi que ocurre durante la quincena de luz del mes de Ashadha. Este auspicioso día es llamado Padma Ekadasi, y por su influencia lluvias abundantes y por lo tanto granos y otros productos alimenticios seguramente volverá a su Reino. Este Ekadasi concede perfección a sus fieles observadores, elimina todo tipo de malos elementos y destruye todos los obstáculos en el camino a la perfección. Oh rey, usted, y sus familiares y los sujetos todos observarán este sagrado Ekadasi ayuno. Luego todo en su reino sin duda volverá a la normalidad."

Al oír estas palabras, el rey ofreció sus reverencias y luego regresó a su palacio. Cuando llegó el Padma Ekadasi, rey Mandhata reunió a todos los brahmanes, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas y Shudras en su Reino e instruyó a observar estrictamente este importante día de ayuno. Después de que lo observaron, cayeron las lluvias, como había predicho el sabio, y en el momento oportuno hubo abundantes cosechas y una rica cosecha de grano. Por la misericordia del Señor Supremo Hrishikesha, el maestro de los sentidos, todos los asuntos del rey Mandhata se ejecutaron de una manera extremadamente feliz y próspera.

El Señor Brahma dijo, "Por lo tanto, Oh Narada, todos deben observar este ayuno de Ekadasi muy estrictamente, pues otorga todo tipo de felicidad, así como la liberación final, sobre el devoto fiel."

Entonces el Señor Sri Krishna concluyó su narración, "mi querido Yudhishthira, Padma Ekadasi es tan poderoso que aquel que simplemente lee o escucha sus glorias se vuelve completamente sin pecado. Oh Pandava, quien desea por favor Me debe observar estrictamente este Ekadasi. Oh León entre los Reyes, Yudhishthira Maharaj, quien quiere la liberación debe regularmente observar un ayuno en este Ekadasi que es también el día cuando empieza el ayuno Chaturmasya."

‎"Regarding the child problem: I may inform you that all our children born of the Krishna conscious parents, they are welcome and I want hundreds of children like that. Because in future we expect to change the face of the whole world, because child is the father of man. Anyway, I have seen Malati is nursing her child so nicely that she attended my meeting every day and the child was playing and she never cried. Similarly, Lilavati's child also never cries or disturbs the meeting. Lilavati was always present with her child, so it depends on the mother. How to keep the child comfortable, so that it will not cry. The child cries only when it feels uncomfortable. The child's comfort and discomfort depends on the mother's attention. So the best solution is that we should train our all first-day small babies in such a way that they are always satisfied and there will be no disturbance in the meeting, and there will be no complaint. But there cannot be any hard and fast rules that only children who are grown up, 7 or 8 years old, can be admitted and no other children can be admitted. That is not possible, and I am not going to sanction any such rule. Rather I shall welcome a baby from the very beginning, so that the transcendental vibration may enter into its ear, and from the very beginning of its life, it becomes purified. But of course, the children cannot be allowed to disturb in the meeting by crying; and that is the mother's responsibility to keep them comfortable, and not to disturb the meeting."

‎REAL DIVINE LOVE

It is said that when conjugal affection between a lover and beloved comes to the point of being destroyed and yet is not destroyed, such a relationship is pure love, or prema. In the material world it is not possible to find this kind of love, for it exists only between Kṛṣṇa and His intimate devotees, such as the gopīs. The sentiment between the gopīs and Kṛṣṇa was so strong that it could not be destroyed under any circumstances.
