Japa Group: We Need To Take Action
Today in the Japa Room there were many interesting questions and concerns about Japa. We sometimes find ourselves in difficult situations where it's hard to rise early or it's difficult to chant our Japa in the morning. One such question arose today about how a devotee was finding it very difficult to take rest early due to work commitments and therefore their Japa was suffering - he was feeling very sleepy and inattentive and he was wondering what to do.
In any situation of difficulty we need to take action and try to adjust ourselves to make Japa the No.1 priority and we also need to pray to the spiritual master and Krsna for help. In a situation like this, the devotee needs to adjust his schedule and try to rise at the same time each day, even if that means slightly later than we would like. Srila Prabhupada recommends 6 hours sleep each day and normally we can survive on 6 - 7 hours of sleep each day which should give us time to chant a good amount of Japa in the morning before anything else.
It's our sincere efforts that Krsna wants to see, if He sees us trying to chant His Holy names in the best way we can, then we can get that reciprocation of the Lord and feel his various spiritual energies in our spiritual life.• Email to a friend • •

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Discovered another letter from Srila Prabhupada!
My daughter, Minakshi devi dasi was doing some research at my request for an upcoming discourse and she stumbled upon the following letter from Srila Prabhupada. It is a short letter but anything from Srila Prabhupada is pure nectar and mercy.
It will be added to the "Letters" link on the website shortly. Actually there are a few updates due on the site including "Recent Pictures" link as well as the "Janmastami" link to upload 2011 pictures which was probably the grandest celebration for Sri Sri Radha Shyamasundar in recent memory. There is also more Prabhupada nectar that has been located so please check back in the coming months to see additional content on the website.
In the mean time here is the "forgotten" letter. Srila Prabhupada indeed did visit our home in 1975 and 1976. There was no next visit by Srila Prabhupada but we like to think he stayed with us through his books, vani, memories and instructions.

My dear SubhaVilasa,
Please accept my blessings. I am in due receipt of your letter dated Dec. 9, 1976 and have noted the contents.
Thank you for helping in this way by taking signatures in support of our movement from the Indian people in Toronto. Yes, I will be happy to visit your home again next time I come to Toronto. In the meantime, please give whatever assistance you can to help manage the temple affairs there.
Hoping this will meet you in good health.
Your ever well-wisher,

Dandavats.com: Srila Prabhupada’s Concluding Words
By Giriraj Swami
Sometimes people think that physical proximity to the spiritual master is an indication of special mercy or good fortune, and in one sense it may be. But the real essence of the relationship with the spiritual master is service to the instructions. And service to the instructions does not depend on physical presence

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: “Sun Dancing” by Michael Hull
If you are ever buying anything from Amazon.com, please visit my blog’s home page and click on the Bhagavad Gita in the sidebar and then go ahead with your purchase. I get a small commission if you do so. This book is about an adventure I shared.
Sun Dancing: A Spiritual Journey on the Red Road
During the interfaith period of New Vrindaban in the early 1990s when we had been cast into the outer darkness by ISKCON, I met Charles Chipps and was invited to Pine Ridge Reservation to support a Sun Dance. A Sun Dance is a 9 day ceremony. 4 days of preparation, Tree Day, then 4 days of highly ritualized dancing.
The dancers take a vow and prepare for a year before the dance (no intoxication for the year being one requirement) and fast for the 4 days of the dance. While dancing they blow in time with the beat through whistles made from the flight bones of eagles and it is an otherworldly sound. Take this heavy austerity, add in hypnotic drumming and the ancient mantras chanted by the singers for 6-8 hours a day and it makes for a very intense atmosphere.
Bhakta Rasa and I went to check it out, We arrived a few days early to help get things set up. We were told that Wallace Black Elk was going to show up with a lot of supporters but that never manifest.
Thus I got drafted to help as assistant Fire Keeper for the sweat lodges. We did at least one every day up until the dance and then did 3 a day for the Sun Dancers during the 4 days of the Dance. Which was cool because I got to be right in the heart of all the action. The dancers observe a vow of no prajalpa, silence, during the 4 days of dancing and could only be communicated to or from the supporters through the firekeepers. Plus the Sun Dance Father and the Sun Dance Leader looked to us for any assistance in any matters as necessary. So I got an insider’s view.
The drumming still echoes in my memory and the smell of smudging sage evokes deep and complex memories.
To get another more detailed perspective on this Sun Dance, read the book.

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST GOVERNMENTS
In various parts of the world, we see demonstrations against various governments' austerity measures and increased taxes.
Srimad Bhagavatam, written by Srila Vyasadeva 5,000 years ago predicts:
SB 12.2.8 - Losing their wives and properties to such avaricious and merciless rulers, who will behave no better than ordinary thieves, the citizens will flee to the mountains and forests.
SB 12.2.9 - Harassed by famine and excessive taxes, people will resort to eating leaves, roots, flesh, wild honey, fruits, flowers and seeds. Struck by drought, they will become completely ruined.
We see how these predictions are gradually coming to be true. There are more and more taxes and more and more pressure on people, who, in turn, protest.
But demonstrations and violence will not help improve the situation.
We learn from our spiritual master Srila Prabhupada as follows:
In the modern democratic states the citizens can have no cause for grievances, because the whole administration is conducted by the people themselves. If the people themselves are dishonest, the administrative machinery must be corrupt. If the people are not good they cannot have good government, regardless of which party governs the administration.
Therefore good character in the consciousness of the mass of people is the first principle necessary for a good government and equal distribution of wealth.
In ancient days the kings were taught lessons in political philosophy by ideal teachers, and the citizens from village to village were taught the principles of self-realization according to the Vedic codes for both the material and the spiritual upliftment of society. Therefore the citizens were God conscious and honest in their dealings, and the kings were responsible for the welfare of the state.
Therefore, the people today suffer on account of their own folly. And what is that folly?
Obedience is the first law of discipline. The people have become disobedient to the laws of God, and therefore neither rain nor wealth is equally distributed. A man who is ultimately disobedient cannot have any good qualifications. When disobedient leaders lead the disobedient people, the whole atmosphere of the administration becomes polluted and full of dangers, as when a blind man leads other blind men.
In the ancient book of wisdom Bhagavad-gita it is said that people should perform yajnas, or sacrifices for the satisfaction of the Supreme. The Supreme is all-pervading. Therefore people must learn to perform yajnas to satisfy the all-pervading Supreme Truth.
There are different yajnas prescribed for different ages, and in the present age of iron industry the yajna that enlightens the mind of the masses for God consciousness is recommended. This process of yajna is called the sankirtana-yajna, or large-scale chanting of the holy names of God for invoking our lost spiritual consciousness. When this process is taken up seriously and sincerely through spiritual singing, dancing, and feasting, the people will become more peaceful, obedient and honest.
The state taxes, therefore, should be spent to perform this simple and easy process and to build the character of the people in general by training them to live and act in the mode of goodness, in line with natural or God's laws and teachings. That will bring happiness to the citizens of the world states and better, caring leadership.• Email to a friend • •

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: IT'S ABOUT THEM
With all your years of coaching, what have you found is the number one obstacle to change?Ego. I am not dealing with all humans, I am dealing with a small subset of humans who are people running large corporations. These people are great achievers and they are used to winning. And they try to win and be right and present themselves in a positive way, because that is what you need to do to become a success. The problem is when you get to the top, you have to quit doing that. One of the great leaders I have ever met is Alan Mulally, the CEO of Ford. He said, "Leadership is not about me. It's about them." And that is hard. For a great achiever, everything is about me; for a great leader, everything is about them. It's a very hard transition--making a transition from a great individual achiever, a smart person, who is successful in their own right, usually technically competent at something, and then gets promoted higher up.From an interview with Marshall Goldsmith:

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: HOW DO YOU TALK TO YOURSELF?
Have you ever observed your thoughts or feelings? Have you ever observed your internal dialogue?
Whether your answer is yes or no, it is beneficial to observe it at least from time to time. Why?
Because if you observe your self-talk you will become more aware of it and thus you can consciously influence it and improve its quality.
Why is it important to improve self-talk?
Because the way you talk to yourself influences the way you feel and the decisions that you make. The decisions influence your action, and action leads to results.
One of the best ways I have found to talk to ourself is like a best friend or a life coach would talk to us. Both of these people have our best interest at heart and have a balance between being soft and hard.
This inner talk may take place as a great advice or an excellent question. You can train yourself to do the both.
Many people I have met have a habit of negative self-talk. And this puts them in trouble. In their mind, they criticize themselves or others, or ask wrong questions like "why me?" or "why this, why that?". And this does not help.
So you can develop a new habit - a habit of a positive self-talk, that will help you solve your problems effectively and achieve your goals faster.
You can give yourself a great advice in any situation or ask excellent questions that will enable you to move forward, find the best solutions and take the best action.• Email to a friend • •

Japa Group: Avoiding The Ten Offenses
Hare Krsna dear devotees, here follows a very nice quote from the Harinama Cintamani by Srila Bhaktvinoda Thakur where he mentions the importance of avoiding the 10 offenses.
"By hearing the glories of the holy name, the last traces of false ego will dissipate, and the symptoms of a pure devotee will then blossom in his heart, and he will take to the six processes of surrender. He who finds complete shelter in the holy name is a great soul, for he becomes the recipient of the great treasure of Krsnaprema. The symptoms of one who is free from the ten namaparadhas In being warned to avoid the ten offenses to the holy name of the Lord, one is actually being ordered to positively implement the specific saintly qualities that render these aparadhas impossible. Therefore, one must: not criticize but serve the saintly Vaisnavas; worship Krsna as the Absolute Supreme Lord; give full respect to the spiritual master who initiates one into the holy name; regard the scriptures that reveal the glories of the holy name as preeminent; know within the heart that the holy name is eternally situated in pure transcendence; root out and destroy the desire to commit sins; preach the glories of the holy name only to the faithful; give up ritualistic pious activities entirely; chant with full attention and surrender fully to the holy name."Harinama CintamaniI wish you have an amazing weekend of japa.

Join this Conference: http://groups.google.com/group/sda_students Help Popularize Our Message By Liking Today's Thought on Facebook: Today's Thought: The Meaning of Vyasa Puja Uploaded from Kaunas, Lithuania The great preceptor and compiler of the Vedic wisdom is Srila Vyasadeva. He is known as the literary incarnation of God. For any spiritual master to be bona fide he must purely transmit without any adulteration the original Vedic teachings as given by Srila Vyasadeva. The seat from which the spiritual master gives discourses is known as the Vyasasana, the seat of Vyasadeva, because only sinless persons who are purely presenting the teachings of Srila Vyasadeva are allowed to sit on it. And the most auspicious birthday or appearance day of the spiritual master is celebrated by his disciples and followers as Vyasa Puja, the worship of Srila Vyasadeva, because when we worship the current link in the line of disciplic succession that worship is transmitted directly to Srila Vyasadeva. On this day the disciples assemble together to make offerings of praise to their spiritual master. They fast until noon and offer a feast, puspanjali, and arati to their spiritual master at noon. Then the disciples joyfully partake of the feast that was offered to their spiritual master. I regularly read the Ultimate Self Realization Course emails on a daily basis. They are very knowledgeable and helpful. I have heard from different people different reasons why we are created but never obtained a concrete answer. Kindly advise why we have been born and sent to earth. Were we first in God's kingdom and because of any sinful act done there have been sent to earth? Kindly explain. Thanks and regards, Geeta Answer: To Enjoy Loving Relationships With Us We are eternally being expanded from the Lord's transcendental body as His separated expansions for the purpose of our having loving relationships with the Lord. Since love is voluntary the living being can choose between loving the Lord and leaving the Lord. Sometimes he foolishly makes the mistake of leaving the Lord. When this happens the Lord then comes to this world or sends His representative, the bona fide spiritual master, to rescue His lost child from this world of birth and death by taking that child back to his or her original home in the spiritual world.
