Sankarshan Das Adhikari Opening the Door to Unfathomed Bliss Lecture in Timisoara, Romania--18 September 2011 http://www.backtohome.com/images/2011-Fall/Timisoara_SF_Lecture.JPG Answers by Citing the Vedic Version: Question: Why Mind Goes Back to Bodily Concepts? Why does the mind keep going back to bodily concepts even after realization of the truth? Raghavendra Answer: You Are NotGetting a Higher Taste. If your mind keeps going back to bodily concepts, this means that you are not getting a higher taste. In other words, your realization of the truth is not mature. To get that higher taste, to become mature in your realization you first of all must have faith in the self-realization process, the process of Krishna consciousness. Then you must associate with pure devotees and take shelter of the bona fide spiritual master by initiation. In this way by giving up your bad habits and becoming solidly fixed in Krishna consciousness you will experience a very sweet taste that you will fully liberate you from all bodily concepts and attractions. Could that sanction come from God? Do we think that is possible? Prabhupada: We don't find there is sanction by God to drink. But under certain circumstances, beverages, different types of beverages allowed, not for intoxication but for keeping health. That is different thing. Just like in the moon planet, it is mentioned they drink soma-rasa. Soma-rasa is a kind of beverage made from extract of herbs. So because it is very cold there, so they drink that, but not for intoxication. People drink for intoxication. Just like in medicine, so many drugs are used. Even opium is used. Yes. Morphia is used. But they are not used ordinarily. For a specific purpose. Even snake poison is used, but that does not mean snake poison should be used perpetually. So for benefit of the body under particular circumstances something may be recommended, but that is not for general use or for intoxication. That is condemned. Just like animal killing is sometimes prescribed in the yajna. The purpose is different. But that does not mean unrestricted animal killing in the slaughterhouse should go on, no. That is sinful. So if we violate the laws perpetually, then how we can consider as belonging to a certain group of religious system? There must be principles. >>> Ref. VedaBase => Room Conversation with Richard Webster, chairman, Societa Filosofica Italiana -- May 24, 1974, Rome • Email to a friend • • Krishna Dharma dasa, UK: The beast risesIn the aftermath of last month's riots opinions were divided as to their cause. "Existing criminals on the rampage," pronounced Home Secretary Kenneth Clarke, while, in a display of party disunity, Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan-Smith declared the problem to be "selfish bankers and MP's ignoring the plight of the poor." Whatever the cause, the riots certainly made for some shocking footage with the police apparently losing control of our streets. Fires blazed everywhere, shop fronts were kicked in and cars turned over as marauding gangs realised that no one was going to stop them. Personal violence was also meted out with a number of brutal incidents being reported. I felt a deep sense of sadness at seeing all this, but I was not particularly surprised. Vedic knowledge points out that a man lacking spiritual practise will descend to the level of brute beasts in his behaviour, and our society now could hardly be described as an emblem of spirituality. This may seem a harsh assessment, but the Vedas define the distinction between man and animal as a quest for religious meaning and truth. Sensual gratification is common to all species but only humans can practise religion. Such genuine practise, according to the Srimad Bhagavatam, imbues a person with "all the qualities of the gods," while its absence results in one losing all gentility and becoming a danger to everyone including himself. Given the right set of circumstances, such as we saw recently, this tendency rapidly rises to the surface. Iain Duncan-Smith's suggestion that selfishness lay at the root of the riots was right. It was the ugly face of selfishness run amok as people grabbed whatever they could while the going was good. Obviously it was also rampant criminality, as Mr Clarke pointed out, but in the Vedic analysis anyone not God conscious is not only bestial, but also a criminal to a greater or lesser degree, stealing the Lord's property. Animals take whatever they want as and when they can, and a person with no spiritual guidelines must act in the same way. The only restriction will be one's personal capability, or the constraints of law, which as we have just seen do not always work. Naked came we to the world, states the Bible, and naked we shall depart. Whatever we think we own was here before us and will remain after we are gone. We falsely claim ownership for a brief period of time before everything is snatched away by death. Really it belongs to its creator and maintainer, and that is Krishna or God. Spiritual practise aims to awaken this perception and its consequent gentle behaviour of using all things in divine service while taking for ourselves only our necessities. Ever increasing consumerism and the all out pursuit of wealth stand in stark opposition to this godly paradigm, but does our present society direct people toward anything else? Who are our heroes and role models, for example? Film stars, musicians and football players, for the most part, all of them flaunting huge amounts of disposable income and quite often a converse degree of morality. Saints and sages hardly get a look in, with religion generally making the media only when it is time to decry the fanatics. And what do our schools offer in the way of spirituality? You're lucky if you get an act of collective worship these days, while RI lessons merely examine religion from the viewpoint of objective academic interest. God is a dirty word in science lessons, and let's face it scientists are the new priests of our modern age. Hardly surprising then that we are seeing godless behaviour breaking out all over. Especially when we add to the mix the fact that society is producing an underclass of people for whom hope and opportunity are words in a dictionary they probably don't even own. Two and a half million are now unemployed; nearly half of them young people, with many coming from families where no one has a job or any realistic hope of getting one. But like everyone else they have been instilled with consumer society's ideal of having everything now, and are continually tantalised by an all powerful marketing machine. Without spiritual practise we are all victims of the same desires; all of us becoming thieves of God's property to satisfy a greed that knows no satiation. Okay, some of us have enough control to not rush out and snatch what we want when the opportunity presents itself, but as long as we remain fixated on material enjoyment who knows what we might be capable of doing if the going gets tough enough? Even those at the top of the heap have shown themselves to be quite capable of snatching what they want, as the recent banker's bonuses and MP's expenses debacles demonstrated. Unless we find some way of injecting spirituality into society soon we can surely expect the madness to continue, from top to bottom. • Email to a friend • • Dandavats.com: Southall Ratha YatraParasuram das: Southall is a suburb of London. They say "the rest is history" but in fact the impact of this historical moment is still being felt and history continues to be made. From this landing Srila Prabhupada went on to grow a worldwide movement of devotees, temples, restaurants and spiritual centres touching millions of people on every continent around the globe. Srila Prabhupada in establishing this worldwide movement and writing and translating so many timeless books continues to touch countless souls and in the coming years this movement will expand more and more to fulfil Srila Prabhupada's wishes and allow for the golden age of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's sankirtan movement. Of course this requires the service of all of Srila Prabhupada's servants to cooperatively carry out his instructions and missions. In many lectures I have spoken about the struggle that Srila Prabhupada faced to save us fallen souls. This included heart attacks and sea sickness on the Jaladuta. Thus, I have chose the below note written by Srila Prabhupada indicating the struggle he faced. Srila Prabhupada's diary falls silent for 6 days and on the 7th day there is a note “Passed over a great crisis on the struggle for life and death.” We cannot forget this struggle Srila Prabhupada went through and to serve him we must struggle through tests and obstacles we may face. The diary entries from Srila Prabhupada aboard the Jaladuta as he arrives in America...THURSDAY 16 Today is the 35th day of our journey and yesterday night at about 10/30 p.m. we have turned one wheel towards north eastern corner from the Bermuda latitude towards Boston port. In the morning the atmosphere was fairly cleared and the ship was plying very smoothly. The first officer told me that they never had such experience of the At lantic ocean and he ascribed the good luck to me. I said yes it is all Lord Krishna's Grace because due to my severe type of sea−sickness, He has Himself taken charge of the ship. In expansion the Lord is rowing the oars. We shall certainly reach to America port safely. The whole day was clear sun−shine but at 4 p.m. the sky all of a sudden became foggy. The sun became dim covered by foggy weather. The horizon is still visible. Let us see what is still ahead. The ship is stopped completely at about 6 p.m. on account of dense fog. Be Lord Krishna pleased to get out this fog. By the Grace of Lord Krishna the fog was cleared after 2−3 hours and the ship started. The whole night was non−disturbing and today on the 36th day of our journey we reached safely at Boston Port at 5/30 a.m. 17 FRIDAY We are now on the dockyard of Boston and at 10 a.m. the custom officers and others came on the ship. They have now issued the admittance permission after due checking etc. I saw the Boston Town with captain It is very nice and I shall describe it in a separate note. 36th day from starting from Calcutta Port To−day we are expected to reach Boston Port U.S.A. in the morning ACB −−/9/65 We stayed the whole day &night at Boston till 4.p.m. next day 18 SATURDAY To−day is the 37th day of our journey &at 4 p.m. we left Boston Port for New York. In the morning I had telephonic talks with Gopal P. Agarwal in Butler and he said that his man will receive me at New York &dispatch me to Butler by Bus or train as convenient. I tried to contact Dr. Misra but he was not available both yesterday and to−day. I do not know if he is coming to receive me. To−day I met two American nice gentlemen Mr. Gardiner &Fryer. We passed a beautiful canal and crossed underneath two overbridges. But at midnight there was considerable fog disturbance and the ship moved very slowly. The fog persisted till we reached late at New York Port at 12/30 on 19/9/65. SUNDAY 19 Today is the 38th day of our journey and we reached New York Port at 12/30 p.m. about three hours later than the scheduled time. My body feels frail because I'm getting sick, my computer is probably headed to the grave, schoolwork is crashing into my life in an avalanche, and I'm tired and woozy and disoriented. My Eyes So Soft You know, one of those fragile days. Krishna Lunch is a program I like to go to on school days - I get to sing kirtan and then be with devotees in the chaotic whirl of school. And of course, the prasadam. But today I didn't want to go - I didn't want to talk to anyone. I just wanted to be my spun glass little self and silently get through the day. You know, survive. But the desire for good food drove me to Krishna Lunch anyway. Man, does prasadam work wonders. After I ate, it was all quiet so I decided to sing, if just for a little while. The melody that came to me, unbidden, quieted my heart. I closed my eyes and forgot I was on campus, forgot I was getting sick, forgot about my computer, forgot about schoolwork, forgot about everything. All that existed was the gentle sun shining on my face and the holy name. When I finished singing, I said to Anthony, "You know, this is a special melody," "How so?" he replied. "There is a song that one sings when someone leaves this world, it's a song of separation and grief. I sang this maha-mantra kirtan in the melody of that song." "Oh really? I didn't know you could sing Hare Krishna when someone died," a girl commented. "Oh yes, you can sing and chant Hare Krishna at any time, in any place. It is the most beautiful thing one could do. And when I was singing this kirtan just now, I was meditating that we are all destined to die. So how do I utilize this moment and every moment? To not waste away my life? I just want to chant. I just want God." I write this only a half an hour later in the library, wondering why I've taken time to narrate this simple experience. Maybe because when I am closest to my frustration with the world is when I feel closest to my realization that I need God. I need God. That is the beauty of fragility. Don't surrender your loneliness So quickly. Let it cut more deep. Let it ferment and season you As few human Or even divine ingredients can. Something missing in my heart tonight Has made my eyes so soft, My voice So tender, My need of God Absolutely Clear. - Hafiz • Email to a friend • • Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: “Sanctuary” by Meir RibalowIt begins with We lurch into life, We take a look around and Whatever we discover, Nature The sun teaches us to waltz The moon guards our The stars, scattered like The bear nuzzling for honey, Souls harbor demons, shadows Risk is natural, stability Our passions are who we Symmetry is not harmony. A stage of life (part 1/2) By Matsyavatara dasa (Marco Ferrini)No matter what our descendant roots are, noble or of humble origin, rich or poor, old or young, illuminated or not, we are all destined to die. We know that it is inevitable, but we deceive ourselves by thinking that others will die before us, that we will be the last to go. Death always seams far away. Isn't it a misleading way of thinking? Isn't it an illusion, a dream? This makes us negligent and we shouldn't believe it. We should be courageous and prepare ourselves, because sooner or later death will knock at our door. (Yamamoto Tsunetomo, samurai monk of ending 1600) Death is most likely the most complex, painful and captivating phenomenon with which man has always had to deal with; generally it irrupts very strongly in the story of an individual, of a family unit and society reality, often leaving behind desperation, emptiness, and mental derangement. Intelligent people of every era, though living in health, have come across this problem with genuine spirit of research, looking for the comprehension of the events that obligatorily move to a different level from the one merely pertinent to the sensorial perception. The thought of death is located deep in the human soul and strongly affects the entire course of life and the character, mostly operating at a deep conscience level. The objective of this analysis is the reinterpretation of the phenomenon, reinterpretation that takes the abandoning of those preconceptions structured in our mind since the green age, and connected to apparent realities and to the destructive image that the idea of death carries with itself. To face this arcane and dramatic argument in the over-rational perspective, lightly expressed and surely unusual for the western culture, we need to take an "inner journey" , to the roots of our deepest and concealed experiences. The rational mind can capture and encode the physical reality, but not all the reality is reconductible to this level. How can the rational function explain in a full and satisfactory way the "intra-psychic" dynamics? How can it answer the existential questions on the imperceptible nature of oneself and explain the mystery of life? In front of death or of a disconcerting medical report even the most solid rationality will vacillate showing all its limits. The sages of the Veda, mind and life scientists who belong to a millenary tradition, indicate how the human being complexity must be studied in its entire bio-psychic-spiritual reality. The classic Indian works explain that barriers between the physical, psychic-energetic and spiritual-metaphysic do not exist; the same human life is a combination of these three interactive dimensions of reality. Man does not only have a physical body but also a psychic body, which represents one of the fundamental bases for the development of the personality. But physical and psychic do not complete the picture of a human being: the physical body and the mental structure are two tools utilized from the purusha, the spiritual self, the subject that perceives, thinks and acts using in fact the body and the mind. Only those that are fully conscious of their self can influence deeply and with determination their physical and psychic bodies, activating inner resources that allows the rediscovering of the auto-healing path. What unifies the physical world and the psychical world, that makes them interactive and gives them a meaning is the self, the vital spark, the witness, the one that sees, that hears, that understands; all the rest are tools. We need to underline that every living being is eternal, therefore the living entity does not have a beginning (anadi) or an end (ananta). The Veda knowledge teaches that we do not die with the body but at the moment of the spiritual journey out of the body we are moved elsewhere aboard of the psychic structure. From this perspective we can transcend the mistaken contraposition of the binomial life-death, rediscovering the living being's dimension in which death, being a life phase, is not in opposition with life, but with birth. Similarly, the "asleep" state of consciousness, the one without dreams, is not in opposition with the "wake" state of consciousness. If we made life coincide exclusively with the wake experience, then we can say that sleep has nothing to do with life, but we know very well that it is not true at all. Without sleep there could not be the wake state: during sleep the neurons healthily interact, all the cells easily surrender their wasted products and regenerate. • Email to a friend • • H.H. The sun, the moon and fire are ‘illuminating principles’. Discrimination is coming from Sudarshan. Sudarshan is ‘The Lord’s effulgence personified’. Krishna contacts the material energy in the form of Siva, who is visuddha sattva. How is Krishna the seed-giving father of all living entities? He is the father of all living entities in the form of lord Siva. Siva impregnates Parvati ‘on a universal scale’. There are three creators. Behind the union of Siva and Parvati is Visnu’s desire. Mother and father are the cause of the child, but behind that is the desire to have a child. ‘The whole spiritual world is illuminated with this natural knowledge and religious principles’. This is the principle of “light” – om ajnana timirandhasya. ‘The whole process of Krishna Consciousness is illuminating’. ‘Love of Krishna is already in the heart. It’s already there. Only covered. Come out of the darkness and step into the light’. There is nothing before sunrise. When the sun rises, however, you can see yourself. ‘Illumination reveals everything, namely our consititutional position, our relationship with Krishna’. ‘Our endeavour is to remove the ignorance. That’s all’. We do not have to endeavour separately, like in the yoga process. We simply have to serve and love Krishna. Illumination brings us to the point of faith; and more illumination takes us further (sambhanda, abhideya and prayojana). Srila Prabhupada’s definition of sama darsana: ‘I see everyone having an equal opportunity to serve Krishna’. He makes the unqualified equal to persons who have this knowledge. Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur defined sama darsana as ‘seeing every living entity as a manifestation of his guru‘. The living entities are seen as being able to carry out his guru’s work. When the Cosmic Manifestation ends, the processes of yoga, jnana etc. cease to exist. Only bhakti yoga exists eternally in the spiritual world. ‘Everyone is liberated. Only you don’t understand that. Why? Because of ignorance. Why is ignorance there? Because you are attached to it’. ‘This Krishna Consciousness Movement is eternal. The activities go on eternally. So we can become part of that also when we realize what’s going on here’. ‘Someone said these sunflowers follow the sun as it moves in the day’ Filed under: A.C.
